She wrote very detailed descriptions of her experiences...

Producers should really be elevated over these directors. Without their wise and cautious monetary investment, the movie wouldn't be made and the worthless artiste directors and "talent" would just lay about in drug induced haze.

It's most telling for me that Steven Spielberg had to step in and save Poltergeist because Tobe Hooper was too stoned out of his gourd all the time. Drugs are supposed to make you better at art, ergo film directing is disqualified from being an artform.

Don't listen to the naysayers, Sidney, I get what you're saying and agree with you...and your most recent post about Poltergeist is so true. It would have been nothing if not for Steven Spielberg.

Directors are to filmmaking what Conductors are to orchestras: useless and given way too much praise for what they contribute (which, again, is absolutely nothing).

So they've actually put this to the test. They filmed the same movie; same script, same actors, same crew, same everything - except for the director and they all came out indistinguishable. No-one could tell which movie was directed by which director. Was Thor Ragnarok directed by James Gunn or Alan Taylor or Joe Johnston or Kenneth Branagh? Nobody knows!

actors are just computers following the program (script). They say the words that are on the page, they go where the script tells them to go.

The screenwriter is the only person who is actually making the movie

If you count them all, this sentence has exactly seventy-two characters.
Directors basically do what the producers or studio wants. Hell, most marvel directors don't even direct their own action scenes. It's all the same CGI shakeycam garbage.

yung swamp thang
as an editor i'm with you 100% OP.

I think people need to reconsider what movies are - they're works of art but they are absolutely collaborations. i've always viewed the role of the director as "the person with the final say on the creative decisions if there's any question/disagreement" which is pretty goddam limited. some people write their own stuff, some work closely with their art and camera departments and have a signature style as a result, but it boils down to a project with dozens of artists all having their own input necessitating a single person who gets last word. like the supreme court for the movie.

director worship has absolutely hosed up whole generations of film students and aspiring filmmakers too who all think you should write your own stuff and everyone else on a project must subsume their creativity to your "vision" and what do you know, your film is butt. why did you think you could write? why did you think you could edit or light? your entire job as a director is to smoothly guide the specialists in the same direction. where is the skill overlap with actual artistic work?
