Wow. Yeah from the Nytimes article the takeaway did seem to be that this generated a lot of money so it should be done on a wider scale. They're getting into "Oral Roberts demanding tithes or God is calling him home" territory.

There will always be canadians who aren't good at much but hitting someone.

That was Derek Boogaard.

A native of Saskatchewan, where he grew up in several different communities as the son of a Mountie, he was known primarily as a fighter and enforcer throughout his career, from junior hockey to the pros. His fighting prowess earned him the nicknames of "Boogeyman" and "The Mountie", and made him a favourite with fans. In 2007, he was voted as the second most intimidating player in the NHL, behind Georges Laraque, who attributed his retirement in part to a desire to avoid the serious injury Boogaard could inflict, such as the cheekbone fracture Todd Fedoruk suffered that had to be repaired with metal plates.

Boogaard died at 28 from an accidental drug and alcohol overdose while recovering from a concussion. A posthumous examination of his brain found he had suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy more advanced than that seen in some former enforcers who had died in middle age.

It'll be interesting to see whether American football will ever see a serious reckoning for all the brain trauma inflicted. I just don't see it happening, though, as even those fans who acknowledge the reality of the issue seem to reluctantly accept it. And there's plenty more who just don't give a gently caress about the lives impacted. It's all too easy to turn a blind eye to.

You're right, something I've heard that might be the Big Deal wouldn't be from the NFL or NCAA, but if school districts start losing class action lawsuits from former players. If they can't get insurance anymore it would dent the pipeline.

I have some cousins whose family put a big focus on football in high school for their two boys. One is in his early 20s and still struggles with weight as he was told to put on pounds to be on the offensive line. The other is just finishing high school and is borderline illiterate. Neither is gonna make headlines but football didn't improve their lives.

Whoa nice. Bob Hoskins was perfect for that role. Interesting to see their other casting options, Harrison Ford might have been ok but Chevy Chase no way. Robin Williams would have been fun, dunno about Bill Murray. He's great but not sure if non-stop sarcasm would have worked if he was bouncing off the rabbit instead of Egon.

You want a straight man comic not a goof. Put Leslie Nielsen in there.

Oh man that's a headscratcher. He's of course fantastic in Naked Gun and Airplane, but he's playing an insane person in an absurd world. Eddie Valiant isn't insane and his actions are rational, although he does adapt to use the tools of a bizarre world. I don't know if it would play to Nielsen's strengths to have him try to come across as a believable burned out alcoholic LA 50s detective. I think he'd still be good but very different movie.

Stravag posted:

Murray has been a "is his murrayness being dilluted by enough other actors to make him tolerable" since i was a kid. I can only imagine all the murray worship is from people who watched ghostbusters once when they were 5.his best role was the lawnskeeper in caddyshack because it was just enough of him

Caddyshack is good but I'd say Groundhog Day was his strongest role where switching him out would weaken the film. He's allowed to be sarcastic as part of his character's jackassedness, but becomes sincere and caring about others so the snark mostly goes away in a believable way.

CainFortea posted:

As much as I love williams I don't think he could possibly play the straight man in a loony toons adventure.

That's true, no way he'd rein in his zanyness. Maybe he could have been Judge Doom but no need to switch out Christopher Lloyd.

Why would Germany have invaded Sweden? They were already getting iron ore imports, allowed to move troops through Swedish territory, and Allied occupation of Sweden wasn't likely. Especially after Barbarossa I don't think Germany was eager to start another front with a peaceful trading partner.

To add to that last one:

Balcerzak first gained national attention in 1991, when he was fired for having handed over an injured child to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, despite bystanders' protests. He appealed his termination and was subsequently reinstated. Balcerzak retired from the Milwaukee Police Department in 2017.

quote:

In May 2005, Balcerzak was elected president of the Milwaukee Police Association, defeating Sebastian Raclaw by a vote of 521 to 453. As president, he was criticized for failing to protect officers from mandatory overtime and not supporting African-American officer Alfonzo Glover, who was charged with homicide on 30 May 2006, and later committed suicide on the same day. By June 2006, the union vice president had resigned because of disagreements with Balcerzak's "leadership style". A petition to remove Balcerzak was filed and a recall election was held in August 2006. The results were 213 for a recall and 397 to retain him. At an October 9, 2009, trustee election, John Balcerzak was not re-elected as a trustee, thus having to vacate his position as president on December 31, 2009.

Finland as mentioned above, but that system is just as bad, it assumes a person doesn’t have substantial expenses and just treats there income as all profit (and no I’m defending the super rich, just idea of pegging it to income), which I don’t like. I mean what if you lost your job, medical emergencies, kid related things, I just don’t like it.

Also I was thinking points only, but that’s really ripe for abuse too, especially for people who need to drive to a job to support their family.

I wish we had their openness about tax records:

quote:

When top earners’ tax returns are published in Finland, they call it “national envy day”. In Sweden, one phone call will get you your lawmaker’s tax bill. Norwegians’ fascination with each others’ taxes has been labeled “financial porn”.

While the Panama Papers have forced British politicians to reveal tax details that are traditionally kept private, and U.S. presidential candidates are under pressure to do likewise, most Nordic citizens’ tax returns are freely available.

Every November, Finnish media publish the names of about 10,000 of the country’s biggest earners, plus hundreds of celebrities and sports stars, making headlines with top 10 lists of the biggest tax payers.

Two years ago, Ilkka Paananen and Mikko Kodisoja, founders of “Clash of Clans” mobile game maker Supercell, were revealed each to have paid 54 million euros in income and capital gains taxes, breaking the Finnish record for annual tax payments.

Norway has published tax returns since 1863, when they were posted on town hall walls. For decades, anyone could request tax data anonymously, leading to worries its people were too obsessed with who was paying what.

quote:

Many Scandinavians use openness on taxes to estimate salaries of co-employees, helping with wage negotiations.

“I think it’s a good idea,” said Tonje, waiting for a train at Oslo’s main station. She declined to give her full name, saying she did not want people to know of her snooping.

“I could check on people who work in the firm in the type of job I’m seeking to see what they earn. Now it’s got a lot harder,” she said, referring to the ban on anonymous searches.

I just read Mississippi Mud, non-fiction about a circuit judge and his wife who were slain in 1987 by a hitman at home, and it took years to solve. turns out the judge’s former law partner had stolen lots of money from an imprisoned crime boss and convinced the guy it had been the judge.

I had a buddy who worked as an assistant DA for a while and got the occasional death threat. Not fun and scary. He’s in private practice now.
