They skipped it in the anime, but the manga opens up with her at the city office. Her dad's dead but her mom ran away. She gets on a scholarship for the school and the city offers to take care of the 'bureaucracy' in lieu of any relatives, since there any none that care

The fact that they exist mainly to shill toys undermines any message they try to have that could possibly be antiwar. The toys must be cool and therefor even its bleakest portrayals of war are cool. In the end they are a part of Japan’s military industrial complex and I can not morally support the gundam series

Historically speaking there have been examples of soldiers without rights that have been used successfully, ignoring the Mamluks and Jannisarries cause their status doesn’t really fit right-less, you have examples such as all the people the Mongols forcibly conscripted or the use of helots in ancient Greece. Examples of soldiers lacking in rights can also be found in punishment battalions or with hiwis. And I’d argue 9 years is very much a short enough time to get people to hate each other with a bit of propaganda. It’s happened plenty in history!
