So much of the plot of Overlord that I've seen seems to solely exist to gratuitously show how overpowered Nazarick is compared to everything else, killing any ounce of tension or reason to care (for me at least). If that changes past season 1 I'll take that back but from the spoilers I've seen I don't think it does.

TBH I feel like So I'm a Spider has kind of shown up other isekai with overpowered protagonists for me, even the 'good' ones. Seeing Kumoko have to earn every inch she gets through blood and ingenuity makes it feel so much better when she eventually gets really strong right in time for her to get the poo poo kicked out of her again. Watching Slime and Spider side by side last season really impressed upon me how little I've cared about the former since the Orc Lord arc and I keep finding myself comparing the two series, to Slimes detriment.

Why does the main character have an ability to kill exclusively people who are surrendering

He unlocked it after killing 10,000 people and the other 10,000 started surrendering. And then used it to kill them.

....But why?

Isekai's run on rpg logic so you get rpg abilities for doing things like crafting or massacres.

i also suspect that whatever law is in place has language that's more centered around "if your quirk enables flight, don't go flying to commute to work because 15% of everyone has some means of flight but not everyone can go at the same speeds nor have the same level of control so we don't have good safety precautions for that many people up in the air" and less "if you have a fire quirk then using that to light your cigarette is illegal." but the show doesn't explore that angle uh, at all so no way to know unless a manga written by a different author has all the answers

Vigilantes explores this more, but it's basically like jaywalking. It IS illegal to use your quirk in public without a license but everyone kind of does it in small ways so as long as it isn't obtrusive nobody cares. The main character is a guy who blows off steam by using his quirk to pick up litter and return dropped wallets. He's technically breaking the law but only gets a stern lecture when caught by a cop. When he starts being a real vigilante nobody really cares because he's helping and even pro heroes look the other way for him because they're not that uptight about it. It's also totally ok to use them in your own house.

However that's only when nothing bad happens. Season 4 of the anime showed that if you use your quirk without a license and someone gets hurt it is not just glossed over.

The problem with the whole 'was it genocide' debate is that it makes Slime sound more interesting and edgy than it actually is.

The show is fully wish-fulfillment isekai at this point. Everything happens to make Rimuru look cooler, more beloved or make him more overpowered. The 'genocide' only exists for this purpose. Also the pacing is just loving terrible and there is no narrative tension. I got mildly engaged when his village got sacked by the humans, but they immediately say everyone is getting revived in the same episode the deaths are shown. And then the next episode is them re-explaining how everyone is going to get revived and wasting the viewers time. The war crime is shown to be ok because the invading army are cartoon villains in the most lazy of ways.

If it wasn't for the production issues Spider would be unambiguously a massive upgrade to Slime on every level.

I know this season is over but is this the normal outlook? Her fights were just constantly belching the same black purple texture all over the screen and calling it a day. I would not rush to call it better than Berserk by much at all.

Her fights were generally a lot more tactical than is usual for anime, which is why I enjoyed it. Even when she just spammed her black spears it was because she'd considered it the best option at the time. That wasn't how she actually won any of her fights that I can remember.
