It's apparently new to the only reviewers I've seen pick up on it not being aimed at guys, since they immediately comment about how they either can't imagine women liking that sort of thing or assume they must have never gone through anything in their lives.

just seems so foreign when like every other season you get people passing around the premise of the latest Magic Bus animated smut for a laugh or gasp.

only outlier with Koikimo is it's in a web magazine without any particular denoted demographic i guess?

i'm not sure why SSSS is the comparison point for Back Arrow, they are so wildly different in style and intent. Back Arrow is the 2021 GunxSword and i think expectations should just be hovering at that moderate level, which isn't a naturalistic study (ignoring the toku) of a couple characters in its cast like SSSS was and seems to be going for again.

anyway, i didn't realize Fairy Ranmaru had some staff crossover from the Cute High series even though they definitely share too much dna to be a coincidence

FR is much more overtly sexual/servicey though, and even as it drops sight gags with news article headlines and barely-veiled innuendo it feels more straight-faced than any Cute High stuff. their usual production limitations feel less kind to a show that isn't falling back as hard on the "excuse" of comedy though, but it probably doesn't help to so heavily draw comparisons between yourself and Madoka by referencing Inu Curry's work on the Witch domains. none of it is bad enough to turn me off, but i do hope they get things a bit more together as the series goes on.

i got twice as far into phantom in the twilight so i dont know what that says about my taste in anime

i dropped s1 of MHA and would maintain that it's a painfully slow and thus bad adaptation. but i suppose it resonated enough with most people to work

later seasons seem to have solved the issue with a combination of better handling of material and just some outright better material in the first place, but i'm not a consistent watcher and focus on reading it instead.

Silver2195 posted:

I'm still enjoying JORAN THE PRINCESS OF SNOW AND BLOOD, but it's more convoluted than ever. Bunch of things I wasn't sure I understood:

  • Were Asahi's (the fake younger sister's) parents supposed to be abusive somehow, or was that just something my subconscious made up so I would feel less bad about Yuki killing them?
  • Is Makoto (the one with the sword) supposed to be a trans man, or was Makoto actually supposed to be female all along and I somehow didn't realize it, or was that just the camera angle making his boobs look big?
  • It did seem clear that Makoto was the actual traitor and framed the cleaner, but I'm not sure if we're supposed to know what their motivations for working for Janome were.
  • Where exactly is everyone supposed to be at the end? Apparently the old lady is actually Janome in disguise, and Janome and Makoto took Asahi to their secret lair, but I didn't follow where the secret lair was supposed to be in relation to the temple where Asahi was supposed to go, the old lady's house, Yuki's apartment, and Elena's brothel.

The reason I consider Joran a good show is that I genuinely want to know the answers to these questions and am asking them non-rhetorically, as opposed to a bad story where I don't care about the plot points that confuse me.

Asahi's parents were pimping her out, in addition to whatever else they did that ran afoul of Yoshinobu's regime (don't remember a specific reason since it doesn't seem as important as the former).

most of the other stuff this week i think is still up in the air. Makoto seems to be presenting male as part of Nue, while their scenes working for Janome they've got high heeled boots and a large brimmed hat that seem to be, at least in contrast, more feminine. I'm still sketchy on their actual allegiances so whether either of these is closer to their self-ID remains to be seen. There are some things that strike me as odd with the location stuff, like Asahi leaving blood traces at the bookstore but her sandal at the old lady's house, and then Janome having her in the hideout elsewhere (having it near that house would be too careless imo). The scene with Elena is also strange given her seeming lack of involvement with the Asahi plot.

Location discrepancies definitely feel like a quick and easy thing to resolve next week, so I'm hopeful for that. The episode was very roller coaster for me as it would subvert my expectations a bit and then play right back into them...so ultimately things left off where I was expecting after the graveyard scene, but in such a way that character allegiances have been muddled well enough. It definitely gives the show a feeling of exciting possibility even as it's doing pretty well-worn spy stuff.

the design of all that Rot3K SD stuff is just awful but that seems to be 90% of what constitutes the animated SD-verse incl. their involvement in "mainline" shows like Build series. ReRise at least is referencing some obscure dead toy line where they were based on beast creatures or something, but unfortunately executed in a similarly ugly way (why do the Gundams need so much hair)

From other anime boards, this is actually a sequel as the heroine from the previous series could be seen as a portrait in the background and the MC is her descendant.

it was a pretty conspicuous scene, but so far i'm just taking stuff like that as references rather than full-on continuity. they've been kind of inconsistent in how characters are handled with Lydia and Yana being similar to their 90s counterparts while Shelley isn't and other characters seem to exist largely as name references like the detective or Paglia. it's obvious Kanata's grandma was raising her granddaughter into a potential athlete, but whether she's actually Akari from the original i'll wait for them to reveal (or not, and leave as an ambiguous tease).

Joran had a great opener this week, and despite still being skimpy on action choreography they do deliver little gems like this

https://files.catbox.moe/noxraq.mp4

the "Book 1" in the titlecards was not messing around either, with things hitting a climax that could easily be taken as the end of the current "book"
