In the sense that Hellsing was originally a porno*. The artist also did porn and reused characters from their porn in their non-porn stuff.

*Hellsing is arguably still porn

I mean, that's kind of the central gag: this high-spec guy who basically has always gotten everything he's ever wanted is getting shut down at every turn by a high school girl who looks at him like he's dirt on her shoe. And then the romance part of it is her slowly warming up to him while he learns to chill out a bit and meet her more on her level.

it's the kind of plot you have to be able to look at separately from how it would go down in actual real life and accept the fantasy of it or it doesn't really work (because he is kind of a creep)

You'd think given how often they used it as a punchline nerds would be familiar with the genre for 50 shades. Still funny to have it discussed in terms of plot rather than just "watch if you into that sort of thing".

For such a stereotypically safe country with a low violent crime rate Japan has a surprising amount of wire fraud.
The US's wire fraud rate is nearly double Japan's. Difference is just down to how seriously the new takes it.

The first modern isekai is the Barsoom series. It's got the bikini girls, candy-colored hair (skin), other world transit by barely explained magic, racism, monstrously powerful protagonist, most major female characters falling in love with the protag, long rants on the author's opinion of religion and society. It's all there.

incidentally the closest one word translation for chuunibyou would be sophomoric. Still not great because it's also used to refer to a different and specific genre.

The Jannisaries iirc didn't "take over" the Ottomans but they did exercise a considerable degree of influence and have a great deal of powers and privileges of being a part of such a elite class entailed but it isn't like they declared themselves the Caliph. They're more like the Praetorian Guard in Rome where the people who are ostensibly are supposed to protect the Emperor are also in a position to choose who gets to be Emperor.
They were able to grind the modernization of the state's military to a halt for over a hundred years to preserve their special positions of power and took over as direct rulers of multiple break away states. They did in fact take over.

Raenir Salazar posted:

The Confederacy during the Civil War tried to use slaves as soldiers, that's actually probably closest along with Osttruppen during WW2.
That is absolutely not true. Even in the most desperate considerations at the end of the war the assumption was that they'd have to free any slaves expected to fight in a modern army. Letting black people fight was considered and shot down, but there was never an attempt to have them fight as slaves. That would require a strong central government mechanism to own and control a a whole slave military as was done for mamluks, janissaries, etc, and by design the Confederacy had no such strong central government.

Nagatoro being a bully is a draw for the show, not a character flaw. If it bothers you being there at all you're not the target audience, if it bothers you in severity then stick around for a few eps to find out.

Overlord's most consistent element is obviously being written as serial fiction with no longer plan and only very minimal edits made to make it more coherent. So it's ability to hold a consistent tone or even quality of writing will never extend beyond a single plot beat. Like more so than normal for light novel adaptations.

It is remarkable that a show about a super slime went with boring an oddly uncomfortably framed head shot lasers instead of just a big old slime envelopment eating them. It'd even side step the whole warcrimes skill if the baddies just had one second to realize whelp we're boned, instead of spending a full half episode of people begging for their lives and running. But you know the author wanted to have a big scene relishing in his totes justified warcrime.

Nemo2342 posted:

The justification (which I don't think comes across very well in the anime) is that the enemy army is protected by an anti-magic barrier, precisely because in a world with super powered magic users/monsters/demon lords you don't want your troops wiped out with a well-placed fireball. So instead Slime uses his knowledge of physics and his super-analyzing skill to create a bunch of lenses out of water droplets that focuses sunlight into deadly laser beams, because that doesn't count as magic.

And also because the other played enough RPGs and thought "laser beams raining from the heavens" looked cool.
It looks boring and completely indistinguishable from any of the show's other laser attacks besides being smaller.

MHA is a show in which bad guys who self identify as bad guys perform terrorism for the sake of making moral points to heroic rivals. In the recent past either Japan or the entire world was controlled by a secret super villain. It is not portraying a realistic world. The villains exist so the hero can have bad guys to punch, hero society exists to have a bunch of super hero character designs present. It isn't going for anything more complex.

The ways that anime is trashy are fairly consistent and quite easy to pick up on, but I don't think any have quite reached the same depths as say Jerry Springer knock offs or Who's Your Daddy a game show in which an adult who was adopted as a child has to guess her biological father out of a lineup where everyone else is an imposter who will win a cash prize if they trick her into picking wrong. If only because the medium of animation makes such direct and personal exploitation impractical. Whereas for live action endeavors there is no end to desperate Americans you can exploit.
