Not to defend the Flyers buuuttt..... They most likely played more games because of the covid condensed schedule than any of those other teams on this illustrious list did. What I'm trying to say is their GA/G probably isn't in the same league as those other teams.

Re: Sabres coaching search.

I actually won't be mad if they stick with Granato. He's got a far more impressive resume than the other clowns this origination has trotted at head coach for the last 10 years. And if his career hadn't been derailed by cancer back in 2005 he'd likely already be a head coach somewhere else.

The issues go back to when they pulled him out of college early and burned a year off his ELC to play him in like three games at the end of a lost season. Then Housley was playing him as 2C when he clearly wasn’t ready for the NHL. They should’ve sent him down to the Amerks way earlier so he could gain some confidence. But I think he’s finally got the size and skill to be a genuine NHL Center. Which is great for them, considering the issues they’ve had with that position for like a decade. Now if only they could improve at every other position, too!

Edit: forgot to mention that Granato is letting Dahlin be Dahlin again so he’s pulling off poo poo like this:

https://twitter.com/sabresplays/status/1379593015556243458?s=21
I think Mitts was a chubby, physically underdeveloped teenager who had coasted by on skill alone his entire hockey career and then had a very rude awakening when he was called up to the NHL too soon.

It took a few years but he put in the work in the gym and the kitchen, put on muscle and lost the baby fat.

And he put in the work on the ice in the AHL.

I was really worried he wasn’t even going to make the NHL, with how bad he looked under Housely. So if he continues on his current trajectory and ends up a 50point 2c I’d be thrilled.

Dahlin unleashed and pulls off this highlight reel keep in and assist.

Skinner is a franchise crippling contract. Skinner won't waive his full NMC because he wants to be near his family in Toronto. Buffalo is stuck with him and his $9mil cap hit until 2026-27. And because of the bonus structure of his contract, buying him out would also be a nightmare. His cap hit post buyout will vary wildly season to season. Imagine a $8,972,222 cap hit for a guy you already bought out. He would likely waive to go to Toronto, but Buffalo would need to retain 33%-50% and pay a lot of draft capital to a 3rd team to also retain 33-50% before Toronto would even be potentially interested at 2.25-3mil per season. And at that point we're probably better off just keeping him.

BUYOUT CAP HIT (BUFBUF)
2021-22 $1,472,222
2022-23 $8,972,222
2023-24 $1,472,222
2024-25 $1,472,222
2025-26 $4,472,222
2026-27 $6,472,222
2027-28 $2,472,222
2028-29 $2,472,222
2029-30 $2,472,222
2030-31 $2,472,222

Speculation has been rampant about Eichel injuries since he missed most of training camp with a generic UBI and then didn't look like himself most of the season. This neck injury looked like it was sustained in his last game of the season mar 7th against NYI. It would be nice to know if he had been nursing other injuries all season.

And sub Girgensons in for Eakin.

Push eakin, rieder, shehan, milller, irwin out of the line up and add a goalie and we're looking pretty decent for next year if the youth keep developing and they keep playing like this.

edit: They are just intentionally getting our hopes up by playing well now, just to crush our hopes again next season. Aren't they?

NJ gets 5 games against a certain unnamed Dogshit Garbage division opponent. They won't finish dead last.
Have you watched a Sabres game the last 2 weeks? I don’t know if it’s just a short lived dead cat bounce from firing Krueger or if the emergence of their young players is for real and will continue. But for now they’ve done a 180 from how they were playing during the winless streak.

They just went 2-1-1 against Bos, wsh, Pitt. And they kept it close in the 1 loss. It’s a big IF, but IF they keep playing like this I don’t see why they can’t close out the final 11 games with at least 5-6 wins. And pass a few teams in the standings.

CBJ is on a 9 game winless streak. NJ has 1 win in their last 11. Ottawa and Anaheim are also within reach.
Sabres are 6-3-2 since snapping the winless streak.

Edit: Reinhart scored his 25th goal of the season, tying his single-season record except this time he did it in 52 games instead of 82. Maybe Botterill should’ve locked him up long term before so we could’ve had him at a decent rate, instead he kept doing bridge contracts and now they’re gonna have to shell out a huge contract to keep him. Maybe Ristolainen will finally reach his potential sometime in his 9th season!
The kids have actually started stepping up in the last 20 or so games. Risto? Not so much...

Reinhart isn't exactly a kid anymore, but he stepped up. He was 5th in goals in the NHL for the month of April(10 goals, 15points in 16 games), and he was playing at center rather than wing for the first time in his NHL career. With the corpse of Jeff Skinner and power play specialist Victor Oloffson on his line.

Dahlin had 11 points in 16 games in April

Mittlestadt, 13p in 16

And the young depth forwards Thompson, Bjork, Asplund, Ruotsalinen all have shown potential. Could have a nice stable of 15-20g middle 6 wingers for the first time in a decade.

Cozens has looked great at times, and has had rookie struggles at others. He's much more of a power forward, tough guy kind of player than I expected. But he's still physically underdeveloped for the role, he's got to grow and get his man strength and put on some more muscle.

Could really use a good defensive defenseman(Oleksiak, Larsson, Merrill, Savard are all UFA. Dunn potentially available by trade) and a goalie from free agency. And inject a healthy 95 point Eichel back into the line up and we might finally be turning the corner.

Sabres need to:

- Trade Risto, ditch Miller (expansion draft?) and keep Bryson in the AHL. Re-sign McCabe, keep Jokiharju, Borgen & Dahlin and sign another good defenseman.
- Ditch Hutton, sign a Ullmark and another decent goalie. UPL needs more time in the AHL.
- Sign a good forward (RW?) to play in the top six, now that Reinhart is likely to play center on the second line. Reinhart is also gonna get paid this off-season which is gonna complicate everything. Bonus points if they play Olofsson on the third line but the first PP unit.
- Lock Cody Eakin in a dumpster and light it on fire
- Don’t loving trade Eichel
- Either keep Granato on as head coach or find a cool and good coach and keep Granato on as an assistant.
- Don’t even get me started on the Pegulas

If they do all of this in one off-season they can be competitive next year and maybe make the playoffs? But Eichel isn’t going to want to put up with this poo poo much longer. The odds of them getting everything done this off-season are nearly zero but maybe Kevyn will pull some magic out of his rear end idk

He's been our 1C for the past month or so and has looked better doing it than anyone hoped for. His 2 way game has never been very good.
