Well Hischier isn't playing but Hughes' advanced stats are bordering on elite so maybe they aren't so far away but they don't seem to have been able to fill out the rest of the roster very well.

Devils are many, many pieces away from being good and are prolly going to be bad for awhile but having an elite center prospect like Hughes makes all of that easier to deal with. He is really good.
They do have 2 guys who are long term answers on D though in Severson and Smith.

There are players who can be plucky or pests and fit the bill he's describing without being shitheads. Guys who piss you off unless they're on your team, at which point you love them. Patric Hornqvist and Scott Hartnell are examples.
