Any discussion of the 2015 draft compels me to complain that the Leafs traded down the pick that the Flyers took Konecny with to select Travis Dermott (one pick before the good Sebastian Aho) and Jeremy Bracco. Dermott's turned into a replacement level bottom pairing D and Bracco sucked rear end.

:golfclap:

That was the draft where they kept trading down because they desperately just wanted picks because Nonis had left the system so empty.

Buffalo trading away the only good goalie in their entire system would be the most Sabres thing ever.

Unless they then signed him as a free agent, which would rule.

I figure the Ullmark inclusion is being driven by the Leafs' side of the rumour mill rather than the Sabres' side.

Honestly since Matthews in 2016 all of the first overall picks have been pretty underwhelming so far, would be nice to have another superstar to watch in the league. I hope he’s a bigger hockey robot than Sid and McDavid too

Shane Wright, one year ahead of Bedard, is also an exceptional prospect. Last year for his age 15 season he put up 39G 27A 66P in 58 games for Kingston, which compares pretty well to McDavid's 25-41-66 in 63 games and Tavares' 45-32-77 in 65 games.

No Auston Matthews in the line rushes today. He had the plague last year, so it's probably not that. Hopefully it's not his wrist bothering him, though anything that forces him out of the lineup is worrying.

e: Second line of Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Hyman is dire. Any team missing its two best forwards will look dodgy but, you know, maybe Hall and not Foligno addressed a more significant area of need for this team.

To put it another way
there are 14 players total... ever... who scored 40+ goals in their 18 or 19 year old season.

The number who pulled that off in their 24 year-old season is 71, and the number of players who put up the same ~ppg pace as Kaprizov is over 200.

Kaprizov is impressive but he's not in the same league as the people who put up those numbers as literal children and while he surely has room to improve there's no statistical reason to think he'll suddenly escalate to their level.

To put it yet another way, Kaprizov is five months older than Matthews.

That is incredibly specific and I would never have guessed Martin fuckin Gelinas of all people as the one to have done it

Remember that it was also Gelinas who put the puck in the net in game 6 of the finals that year — the non-called goal — which would've at the time been the potential Cup-winning goal. So he would've scored the game winning goal in every series.
