Some good links in here. I get people’s criticism but the dude keeps his sound fresh by completely changing styles on everything he makes. Gotta at least give him some credit there.

What’s wrong with mr bungle? Yeah it’s not necessarily music you’d put on for 20 people out of nowhere, but plenty of his other material is perfectly suitable for that

You’re like the second or third person to say this. There are plenty of people who are extremely annoying about any type of music, and I wouldn’t say he is “catering” to those guys. I like it when the beats and the boops sound good. If you wanna talk about experimental music that sucks Mike Patton is pretty far away from the poo poo people will try to explain to you.

Presumably anti-pretentious people who constantly harp on about how much they hate pretentious people are invariably more pretentious than the pretentious people because their pretensions are based on an weird bizarro populist elitism where they act like they're the only ones who truly understand any given artist or act is bad kind of like pretentious kids who are pretentious because they listen to the Beatles instead of rap music but this time it's people being pretentious by proving how pretentious they aren't because they listen to normal music instead of weird music.

In summation, no one gives a poo poo if you don't like Mike Patton bitch!!!

The Patton/Kiedis feud was pretty much entirely on Kiedis' side. He bitched about Mr Bungle's California being released on the same day as Californication, so the label (that they were both on) put California back. Then he got Patton kicked out of a festival the Chili Peppers were headlining.

AFAICT the whole thing started because Kiedis said that Patton was stealing his style (idk how, they have literally nothing in common) and then one of the Mr Bungle dudes made a lovely joke about that guy from the Chili Peppers that ODed and died.

I specifically have a sore spot against Mr. Bungle fans because I had a roommate in college who would insist on blaring it during otherwise successful house parties. It was a real mood killer. Once most people had left he would switch to Cattle Decapitation and sit in a corner doing "metal face" and "metal claw". He was a bad roommate.

The only reason I said anything is a (presumably inebriated) poster in here said that MP taught them how to be a real man because he does his own thing.

Trying to explain why music is good is lame. Context helps add some punch sometimes, but you're never going to talk someone into liking something they don't like.

You're either going to dig it or you are not.

I actually only just found out about 'em last year. It's Bär McKinnon's band after Mr. Bungle broke up, which uses some ideas that didn't quite make it to California. Mike Patton also guests on a track!

Edit: The whole drat self-titled album is pretty great. It's definitely not quite a true sequel to California, but it's the closest we'll get, I think

Mike Patton outed Kedis as having never actually lived in or been to California (he's from Kansas City. anytime you see Anthony Kedis in Cali, it's done with green screen) and Warner Music had to spend something like a quarter billion to kill the story. Tony still holds a grudge.
