 It's April & in American wrestling that means 15 days of Wrestlemania to suck any interest in wrestling out of you between the 3 hour Raws & Takeovers & 8 hour Wrestlemanias. But in Japanese wrestling that means one thing: The oldest annual tournament in wrestling rolls back into town. This year is the 40th edition of the Champion Carnival, a tournament first run the first April the company existed for (except last year because COVID saw it postponed to September/November), & it comes off the back of a definite uptick in the company's performance in the first part of the year. If you've watched the G-1 or similar round robin tournaments that most Japanese wrestling companies run you should know what to expect: a relentless schedule where the biggest Heavyweight names in the company go head-to-head over the course of a month, with the winner almost certainly earning a shot at the Triple Crown champion Suwama on May 15th's show at Ota Ward Gym, the biggest show the company will have run since August 2017's Sumo Hall show. (except not really because it's not going to be a full capacity Ota Ward Gym but I'm trying to sell you on this) Why does this matter then? Well, because it should be some good wrestling. But also because of the history. The history goes back to 1973 & was first held 7 months after All Japan held their first show, & can be considered an official successor to the JWA's World League tournament, whose on history ran from 1959 until 1972. Giant Baba won 6 of the last 7 editions of the World League (interrupted only by Antonio Inoki's win in 1969) & continued that dominance in his new promotion, winning 5 of the first 6 editions. Baba remains unsurpassed in Carnival dominance, having won 7 editions, his last victory coming in 1982. It then went on hiatus until 1991 as All Japan fell behind New Japan & Baba didn't want his tournament overshadowed by the G1. It's been run every year since then & has been won by some of the biggest & best names in the history of the sport: Abdullah The Butcher, Jumbo Tsuruta, Stan Hansen, Mitsuhara Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada, Akira Taue, Kenta Kobashi, Vader, Genichiro Tenryu, Keiji Mutoh, Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata, Minoru Suzuki, Jun Akiyama, Naomichi Marufuji, Kento Miyahara. Baba has 7 victories, Mutoh has 3, 7 other men have won twice, but nobody in this year's field has won it more than once. Even as All Japan is a shadow of its former self, the Champion Carnival matters. OK, what do I need to know? This year's edition has a field of just 10 men in one block, the first time they have used the one block format since 2001. Aside from last year's pandemic reduced field, the last time the field was just 10 competitors was 2010. The other main detail to be aware of, because it's a one block tournament the Carnival can be won without a final; whoever has the most points after the final match wins, obviously enough. If two men have the same points total then there would be a playoff, no tiebreakers are considered. Otherwise it's familiar rules from the G1: 2 points for a win, 0 for a loss, & 1 for a time limit draw. And the tournament matches all have a 30 minute time limit. So, who is involved? If you have checked in on 2021 All Japan then the field should be very familiar to you as it's 9 regulars & 1 outsider. Among the 9 regulars, 4 have won the Champion Carnival before.  Jake Lee, 1x AJPW Tag Team Champion, 2x All Asia Tag Team Champion, 2019 Royal Road Winner It's a handy coincidence that Jake Lee is the first alphabetical name on this list because right now he's also the favourite to finally win his first Champion Carnival, having reached the finals in 2019. But that Jake Lee is not that this Jake Lee. JIN are dead. Instead, Jake Lee has turned to the darkside, leading TOTAL ECLIPSE & having run roughshod over the company since their formation at the end of February. So far they are undefeated, in singles & tag action. While the 100% record will fall, Jake & his new attitude are in the perfect place to finally take the step up he's been threatening to take for the last 2 years.  Kento Miyahara, 4x Triple Crown Champion, 3x AJPW Tag Team Champion, 1x All Asia Tag Team Champion, 2018 Royal Road Winner, 2019 Champion Carnival Winner The Best of the Best. The ace of All Japan. When Kento has his day he's one of the best wrestlers in the world. Right now he's one half of the AJPW Tag Team champions with NEXTREAM partner Yuma Aoyagi & he's been focused on that, having only had 2 singles matches all year. But when go time comes, expect fireworks.  Kohei Sato, 6x ZERO1 World Heavyweight Champion, 1x BJW Strong World Heavyweight Champion, 1x All Asia Tag Team Champion, 2004 Fire Festival Winner, 2015 Fire Festival Winner The former top gun in ZERO1 is fresh off an unsuccessful challenge of Suwama's Triple Crown back in February in a match which was good-not-great. He's 43 now & has been working a strong, stiff style for 20 years now & you can tell it has taken a toll. He'll pick up some wins but isn't really in contention. Hopefully most of his matches are kept sub-15 minutes because otherwise they could be a slog to get through  Koji Doi, 5x WRESTLE-1 Tag Team Champion The second TOTAL ECLIPSE representative in the tournament, he came to All Japan last year as part of the Enfants Terribles invasion after WRESTLE-1 closed, he's not as regular as fellow W1 refugees Kodama, Ashino or Arashi, having only had 16 appearances in All Japan in the past 12 months, & only 1 of those was a singles match. So this is a huge opportunity for him to really establish himself as more of a regular in the company & hopefully he's able to grab that opportunity. That said, he's still probably the favourite to finish this tournament in last place.  Shinjiro Otani, 1x J-Crown Champion, 1x IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, 1x WCW Cruiserweight Champion, 1x AWA World Heavyweight Champion, 1x ZERO1 World Heavyweight Champion, 2001 Fire Festival Winner, 2002 Fire Festival Winner, 2005 Fire Festival Winner, 2010 Fire Festival Winner A legend in Japanese wrestling, this will be first time wrestling for All Japan since 2003. Despite his age he's still a fantastic wrestler on his day, so I've high hopes for a couple of notebook matches from him, though no idea where he will finish in the standings.  Shotaro Ashino, 2x WRESTLE-1 Champion, 2x WRESTLE-1 Tag Team Champion Oh poor Shotaro Ashino. And it started so well for him last summer. He was the leader of Enfants Terribles & a standout in the AJPW no crowd shows from last May, earning a shot at Suwama where I was convinced he would win to be a real shot in the arm of the promotion. Instead he lost, had a forgettable Champion Carnival (hardly unique in that regard), lost a second title shot at the end of January & then Enfants turned on him. Ashino is great but I don't think All Japan's bookers agree. Maybe it's because he has the "stink" of a promotion that went out of business on him (which is funny because until some film producer got involved with AJPW they were on a shoogily peg too), maybe they are just loving idiots, I dunno. He's going to need rehabilitated before he can be a contender again; this tournament has come too soon. But it will be interesting to see how he fares to see if they even have any intention to rehab him. The wrestling should still be good though.  Shuji Ishikawa, 1x Triple Crown Champion, 4x AJPW Tag Team Champion, 4x KO-D Openweight Champion, 1x BJW Death Match Heavyweight Champion, 1x BJW Strong World Heavyweight Champion, 2014 Ikkitousen Strong Climb Winner, 2016 Ikkitousen Strong Climb 2016 Winner, 2016 King of DDT Winner, 2017 Champion Carnival Winner, 2018 D-Ou Grand Prix Winner He's one of the bookers with TAJIRI, he's the GAORA TV champion (a title about as prestigious as the NXT UK Tag Team titles), & after a long career he is finally slowing down & cycling down the card. His legendary tag team with Suwama, Violent Giants, came to an end after they lost the Tag titles to NEXTREAM on January 2nd. It's a shame but it's a cruel business & there's not much sentimentality. Hopefully he finishes near the bottom of the table, hopefully his matches aren't too long, that's really all I can ask for.  Suwama, 7x Triple Crown Champion, 5x AJPW Tag Team Champion, 2008 Champion Carnival Winner, 2016 Royal Road Winner, 2017 Royal Road Winner The reigning Triple Crown champion, Suwama's 7th time holding that belt has been his 2nd longest: it's been over a year since he toppled Kento Miyahara & 7 defences. The defences haven't been bad, Suwama is slowing but still more than able to hold his own in there at the top of All Japan cards, but ultimately this title reign has been a step backwards. It was assumed that in 2020 Naoya Nomura would win the Champion Carnival & then be the man to beat Kento, moving the company in a fresh & youthful direction. Instead Nomura got hurt & we've not seen him since, Suwama pulled up the upset against Kento & fans figured he was a transitional champ because hey, there's a pandemic & no fans. Instead he gave Shotaro Ashino his first loss in the company, beat tag partner Ishikawa, beat Zeus, beaten Aoyagi, beat Ashino again, beat Sato & beat Yoshitatsu. It's nothing against a very good wrestler but he has to drop the title to the winner of this tournament in May. Has to. It would be an absolute disaster if he doesn't.  Yuma Aoyagi, 1x AJPW Tag Team Champion 2x All Asia Tag Team Champion Yuma Aoyagi had a strange 2020. It started with him turning on Kento Miyahara, challenging him for the Triple Crown in a good match & then spinning his wheels until September's Champion Carnival, where he saved Kento from a beatdown. It was bad booking of the sort that exemplified how directionless All Japan often felt last year, especially in the back half. BUT. Getting back together with Kento has been a tremendous thing for Aoyagi, they won the Real World Tag League last December, taking the chance to win the Tag titles from Violent Giants on January 2nd before having his 2nd ever Triple Crown shot the following day, losing in a terrific performance. NEXTREAM are back with Kento & Yuma joined by youngster Rising HAYATO & Yuma's brother Atsuki Aoyagi, & Yuma is still only 25. His matches will be great & he could well still be alive on the final night.  Zeus, 1x Triple Crown Champion, 5x AJPW Tag Team Champion, 1x All Asia Tag Team Champion, 1x OPW Champion, 2013 Tennozan Winner, 2020 Champion Carnival Winner The defending Champion Carnival champion, Zeus is one half of the All Asia Tag champions with Purple Haze stablemate Izanagi. He's probably not winning back to back tournaments but expect Zeus to use his power to put on entertaining matches & finish with an above .500 record. How do I watch this? That's easy. AJPW.TV is where to go, they will show every match of the tournament, 8 shows are going to be live & 2 will be uploaded afterwards to view on demand. The tournament begins live this Friday, 9th April at 6pm Japanese Time (10am in the UK, 5am on the US east coast, 2am on the US west coast), with additional shows on 10th April (Live), 11th April (VOD), 17th April (Live), 18th April (Live), 24th April (Live), 25th April (Live), 28th April (VOD), 29th April (Live) & 3rd May (Live). AJPW TV is 900 Yen a month, which works out to about US$8 or GBŁ6, or pennies per show across April. OK, I'm signed up to AJPW TV to give it a try. What matches should I really pay attention to? As much as I'd like to see Aoyagi & Ashino do well & get built up it a bit, end of the day the thing that matters is they don't throw away the Jake Lee turn & momentum. Which they might, after 2020 it's hard not to have a voice of doubt about the wisdom of All Japan's booking lurking in the back of your head. "When in doubt, go back to Kento" is another possibility which hopefully doesn't come true because with NEXTREAM's tag champion run it feels they have finally found something to do with Miyahara while he's not on top. Really, all I want is two things: Jake Lee to win & Yuma & Shotaro to come out of this in stronger positions than they were in when they went in. Let Ashino get a win over Suwama after his 2 losses inside 12 months. Have Aoyagi get a big win, be it over Suwama or Kento, because right now he's a combined 0-7 against those 2 big guns, with his biggest win coming in 2019's Carnival against Zeus. After that it's probably Yoshitatsu? He needs a big victory before too long.

I was mighty confused after I signed up since it didn't ask me for any credit card information during registration, but it's all sorted now. Watched Kento vs Shingo Takagi which ruled, and Tajiri vs Minoru Suzuki which ruled less but had Taj pulling out the Yano poo poo that really grinds MiSu's gears. I know barely any of the guys in the CC so i'll be cheering for Old Man Ohtani until he's mathmatically eliminated.
