Any ~insider info~ from the Kentucky end about why he didn't end up there? Or why he left Auburn in the first place -- it's been assumed that he just had a really lovely year with the concussion not only preventing him from playing but completely disrupting his life for weeks and going closer to home made sense but nobody's reported anything more specific.

Rumor is that Desi Sills has academic troubles that will likely prevent him from transferring to Auburn. Less of a blow since picking up KD Johnson from the mass Georgia exodus (what is going on there?) but it was seemingly his pickup that led Trey Alexander to decommit so that's unfortunate. Hard to get hung up on any one guy since they ended the season needing to grab a ton of ready guards and did do that even if the names have changed but still, unfortunate.

As rumored, Desi Sills couldn't get some credits to transfer to Auburn and will instead enroll at Arkansas State.

News breaking that Allen Flanigan, one of Auburn's like entire roster of guys whose name you probably don't know but are entirely capable of having a breakout year and going in the second round, is out 12-14 weeks following ACL surgery for a non-basketball injury. Presumably misses the Battle 4 Atlantis (is it still the "Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis")? Hope the off-the-court circumstances were funny and not like tragic.

Not a ton to take away from Auburn's opener against Morehead State but no red flags; Jabari Smith and all the transfer guards seemed like they lived up to expectations. Walker Kessler is going to destroy some fools like why the gently caress did UNC let him get away. Still might be like a fifth-place team in a nightmare SEC but has all the piece to go deep. Once Allen Flanigan comes back in a month or two they'll be rotating 10 or 11 with no real weak links.

Can't remember the last time I was as happy with a loss as Auburn vs. UConn today. Last year Auburn loses that kind of game handily, maybe makes it single digits in garbage time, but never really threatens. No shame in finding the tank empty in double OT against a really good team with more experience than you. If that's how they lose big games in November, they will be winning them in March.

KD Johnson was really the revelation here. Knew he was good at Georgia but he took that game over (and maybe should've given it back a little in 2OT instead of attempting the same low-percentage 3 on like three consecutive possessions, but whatever).

Auburn G Allen Flanigan reportedly returning to practice this week ahead of schedule after his Achilles tear, might be ready for conference play. Even with the injury he was voted preseason All-SEC, projected as a late first round candidate after taking a big step forward last season, especially while Sharife Cooper was held out. Coach's kid and plays like it, great basketball IQ, only concern about his return is how they manage the minutes with no obvious weak links that he could replace.

Biased, but love this team's chances to make a deep run.

e: had never actually heard the circumstances of his injury, just that it was "off the court" during the offseason until now:

Auburn closes conference play with Allen Flanigan returning for a 71-58 over Murray State. 11-1 with like six wins over teams with real tournament chances and a very respectable loss makes for a great start to the resume. SEC is going to be sick, might go like 12-6 but still feel like I'm going to like this team a lot.

Also: big upset chance for Auburn tonight at Arkansas. Escaped Georgia without "starting" PG Zep Jasper, had to make do with Cousy Award finalist "backup" Wendell Green Jr. (they're really deep) Jasper's availability (non-COVID illness) hasn't been announced for tonight afaik. Good opponent, loud crowd, due for a loss -- fine with me if they get it out of the way tonight.

All according to plan...
But yeah some problems were very visible in Zep Jasper's second missed game. Distribution was disrupted; he's also their best on-ball defender. Not really complaining when his replacement, again, is regarded as one of the best PGs in the country, but if they're going to disappoint in March, that might be how it happens.

Fun fact I saw in some coverage of Auburn's game against A&M, featuring Walker Kessler's second triple-double with 12 blocks. He's leading the country in block percentage (of all opponent's 2-point attempts when on floor) at over 20% (would be the highest in like 15 years, at least), with Western Kentucky's Jamarion Sharp next at 17%. Kessler stands at 7-1, Sharp 7-5.
