NISIOISN and SHAFT strike again, in a light novel adaptation directed by Akiyuki Shinbou (various Monogatari series, March Comes in Like a Lion, Nisekoi), and Hajime Ootani (Assault Lily Bouquet). Case #1: The Dark Star that Shines for You Alone: A young girl has wanted to be an astronaut ever since she saw a mysterious star ten years ago — a star she could never find again. To locate the star of her dreams, she must enlist the aid of the Pretty Boy Detective Club: five beautiful boys whose mystery-solving organization remains a closely-guarded secret. Why is it secret? Because they're so fuckin' weird that anybody who talked about them would be called a liar. Here's the PV. Rand Brittain fucked around with this message at 23:36 on Apr 10, 2021 |

Meanwhile, this happened just as I was reading the first light novel since it's out in ebook now, and I have to say (spoilers that probably aren't covered in episode one) really, Mayumi? Did you really never think that seeing a star nobody else could see might somehow be related to your bullshit visual superpower that nobody else has?

I have to really start making these threads a couple of weeks in advance instead of the day of airing As you said in the OP, it's another work by writer Nisio Isin, being produced by Shaft Studio, but I would add into the OP that it is being directed by both Akiyuki Shinbou (various Monogatari series, March Comes in Like a Lion, Nisekoi), and Hajime Ootani (Assault Lily Bouquet) And here's the PV from the season thread: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCCyFQeGoYU

This is a weird experience to do right after reading it and having my mental picture of Generic Anime High School Roof replaced with The Anime High School From Utena (this is middle school tho) Only Drawn By SHAFT.

I don't think this will be Shinbou's magnum opus, but I'm just glad I can get my fix again.

Well, of all the things I was expecting nuclear conspiracy definitely wasn't one of them. I'm enjoying the show so far and it's incredibly beautiful, but is anyone else kind of weirded out that these kids are supposed to be middle schoolers? I know it's silly to consider plausibility in anime, but the closest analogue I can think to this is Ouran High School Host Club and somehow their mega richness and superhuman talents somehow seemed more plausible since they were high schoolers.

At this point I do think his association with adapting NisioIsin's stuff comes from a place where he genuinely likes the source work but I still think Katanagatari might still be the overall best Nisioisin adaptation, and he had squat to do with that one.

Yeah, I think I would have to say "these are all middle school boys" is just an elaborate joke on anime ages and how they don't make sense, given that the class president is for all intents and purposes a grown-rear end man sitting in middle school claiming to be fifteen like he's Inoue Kikuko or something.

Ohhhh yeah. That must be it. The alternative would have to be some sort of perverted explanation that I just don’t expect from the monogatari guy

Usually the perverted explanation involves someone who looks Too Young insisting that they're a thousand years old and not the other way around, of course, although The Wrathion is a thing that happens.

First an unknown star turns out to be a nuked satellite, and now a casino that's a testing ground for state-of-the-art stealth suits. This show just keeps getting wackier with every episode. Gotta love it.

I guess their plan is just to outdo Knox's rules about this kind of thing by an order of magnitude.

This one didn't get a lot of attention but, having finished it, I feel like it stayed pretty high-quality throughout. I appreciate that most of the mysteries were hard to solve primarily because the solutions were so balls-out weird.

There were a number of extremely WTF moments in the show, but it was pleasant enough. I guess I was just expecting things to be... wackier?

I also just realized that after all our talk about people's ages the final criminal really was just a grown-rear end man wandering around the school performing assassinations and claiming to be a middle-school student.

I mean, it's Nisio Isin. It's practically a requirement for participating in a story penned by him that, as a character, you need to be a little off-beat.

Yeah, I've just been so busy this season, both irl and watching a bunch of other shows, that I didn't have time to watch this. I plan to at some point though, even if just for the art.
