I call it a noir or neo-noir series. We've got a crime drama with a lot of complicated characters who have a lot of different facets to them. There's plenty of grit and cynicism in the setting and a lot of gray in the cast. We've got the classic thematic staples of noir and neo-noir in the mix of pessimism, nihilism, and isolation we see in the lead and and how it presents the various characters around him. We even have staples of the film genre's presentation in the penned in framing of the show, how many shots have just been Odokawa with someone in the back seat of his cab? Two people stuck together in a cramped metal box hurtling through the night? Which means, of course, there's gonna be some overlap with Tarantino and some of his films. So yeah, I guess you could find a point of comparison there.

I totally agree with the guy who said this show gave them Yakuza vibes. Also Kiryu's VA was the yakuza boss looking guy so that was a pleasant surprise.

That gacha part would've personally hit harder, but I've have yet to spend anything beyond 5 dollars in FEH since I started playing it again back in December. Still an awesome episode and I completely understand where it's coming from, tho'!

I feel like that was a better exploration of addictive personality types and gambling problems than... basically anything in fiction I've encountered before? Granted, I'm not the world's most read individual, but it struck me as a better demonstration of "Oh, so this is what goes on in their heads" than most movies

the bit where he ruminates on why he wants this dodo so badly, admits that he’s just sick, and then keeps pulling the gacha anyway was a great summation of that condition and it’s not just gambling, but the pursuit of ephemeral pleasures in general. this guy is representative of innumerable people who don’t have anything to strive for so they fanatically pursue distractions that are totally inconsequential (mood). it makes gacha seem even more insidious than regular gambling because he can’t possibly gain anything from it beyond the next dopamine tingle “every time I got something I wanted, it was followed by that word: ‘and?’”

Firstly, the eraser story had nothing to do with addiction. Secondly, as much as gacha makes you immediately think of addiction, he didn't really care about the game at all until he saw who was #1. That's when he got obsessed and began pouring money into it. They even show him pulling rares (some I think even rarer than the dodo) and being unaffected. He wasn't chasing short-term highs like an addict would. In both cases he'd set a goal of beating a particular person and was obsessed beyond reason at achieving that goal even if he knew deep down it was pointless. That dovetails with the end where Odakawa has become the new target of his obsession. I feel like it's more a statement of how society has systematically removed the long-term goals people used to aim for so people replace them with superficial ones, but that's not satisfying. Stuff like having a career, buying a house, or even having a family are things a lot of young people feel is out of reach. So instead they shoot for things like getting a high rank in a video game or, to bring in another part of the show, gaining 'success' on social media like the hippo guy. Even the idols and the comedians are pursuing fame but none of them are particularly enthusiastic about it. Everybody is just going through the motions while still feeling that their situation is unsatisfying in a way none of them can properly identify. And then acting out in a variety of ways that even they themselves don't fully understand.

Yeah that's a good point, it's more about single-minded obsession over achieving some sort of status than addiction. Dude had nothing going for him in his life, got beaten by his father and didn't have friends. He wanted to feel some meaning in his life and have people acknowledge him (ironic considering he seemed to be competent at his job at first and that probably would have happened had he never gotten into gacha). Then when he got robbed of that, he wanted to enact vengeance. I feel like that's what the theme of this series is gonna be. You have these characters like Twitter Hippo and Gacha Cat who want to stand out and be noticed, meanwhile Odokawa is perfectly content driving his taxi and living his quiet life. what if odokawa comes from a dark past of eraser auction scams and after playing so much fuckin' I think the eraser addiction thing makes sense, easily relatable to the pokemon card craze and other dumb fads that ran through my early school days. It's a different kind of addiction but it's still a big problem.

Best guess: Shirakawa is sourcing perscription drugs for the yakuza to pay for med school bills and the eraser thing was just a past attempt to launder drug money and ended up being a useless trinket that just coincidentally happened to get into Odokawa's hands at exactly the wrong time

I started watching the show after glimpsing this thread, now I'm hooked like nobody else's business.  I laughed until I cried with that bit from the beginning of episode 3. "A gorilla," "Well you aren't wrong," seems a huge clue. It's just not a conversation they would have if the doctor was actually a gorilla. That and a nurse laughing at being called an Alpaca. Maybe the car crash the policeman flashed back to was the cause of his mental break? Yeah, at least going by the subtitles, the language seems to be rather evasive or obfuscating at times. I think that there's definitely something deeper at work here than what's being said on the surface level that will be revealed over time.
