I wouldn't say dumb, but it was fun seeing how they (mis)read the situation.

Chef Jessica - got it spot on; gave Brennan exactly the kind of family-sized comfort meal he wanted while fancying it up just enough.

Chef Mark - also pretty on target with a big-rear end sandwich; would have had a fair shot at winning if Chef Jessica hadn't hit the bullseye.

Chef Trevor - completely off the mark. Created a technically impressive meal that he then had to try to sell via presentation.

Right now you’d have to infer from the big cards when a new episode is coming out (“okay, every other Friday, so let me see when the last episode came out…”)

The Dropout YouTube channel will post a “this week” short if that’s more palatable to you.

It's also important to note that, by Sam's own admission, Dropout usually does a "buzzer" in the form of editing, cutting out the majority of what's actually attempted. The Auntie Anne's pretzel chain has a pretzel they top with cheese and pepperonis, so that's also an option.

With Vic I am never sure if they had an actual pretzel pizza from somewhere and then made the weird story up to keep getting reactions, or if they legitimately did try to cobble something together out of pretzels, marinara, and cheese as a kid.

And I think it highlighted one of the things that I hope they do less of in the upcoming season - Contestants trying to subvert the premise of the game.

The show has built a reputation of allowing subverting the premise of the game with episodes like "Do I hear $1" and "Race To the Bottom" but I think there are an increasing number of examples the past couple of seasons of resisting the premise when it's really not necessary for the flow or the comedy. Other examples: Physically trying to prevent Grant/Zac from dirtying their podiums, people voting for Sam on Survivor when they already tried that once and he said no, Brennan bidding negative infinity when Sam said you can't do that.

(However, one great exception is Trapp getting a ladder to get a duck.)

Good news is that I think it's a "problem" that can be solved with editing. It's all still improv so there's nothing wrong with trying stuff out, I think it's just a matter of frequency it's shown.

Anything that fucks up the awful Survivor episodes is fine with me; I really hope they leave that one behind again.

My personal opinion is that while Game Changer hits far more than it misses, when it misses it *really* misses.

It's unfortunately the big weakness of the format; there's only so much they can do to fix issues, and since most concepts don't repeat they can't refine concepts that were close but not quite there.

NEW SHOW ALERT!

Goddamned this looks great and I am hype

It is perhaps the most ingenious thing about Taskmaster. You really get to meet comedians throughout the ten episodes, and I don't think anyone's done it "playing a character". A few have dropped their act to be on it. It's great.

If you want to give it a whirl, may I suggest starting w/ season 7

Pinwiz11 posted:

e: nm, the correct starting series is UK13.

Inkspot posted:

Can't remember which one it is, but the Taskmaster series with Dara O Briain, Fern Brady, and Sarah Millican can't be recommended enough.

Since I just started watching Taskmaster thanks to this discussion I wanted to add my own thoughts.

I started with UK13. As an entry point I thought it was a very solid season, though I didn't find that it hooked me the way Game Changer or Make Some Noise did. Good cast, fun episodes, but it was very tempting to stop with just that season now that I could say I understood what everyone was talking about.

Thankfully I then moved on to UK14, and that one had me in stitches. Dara's competitiveness bouncing off of John's helplessness, and then mixed with Fern's delightful quirkiness really hooked me on seeing just what was going to happen in the next episode.

Due to the constant references to the "knappet" in those seasons (and in the comments) I then ended up jumping back to UK7.

As an entry point to the series I think it's a poor choice; real or feigned, the anger and combativeness in the first couple of episodes would have been extremely offputting and I likely would have not finished the season if I wasn't already familiar with the show. However now that I knew how the show "should" work, it provided an interesting contrast to the other seasons and I was more willing to ride it out.

And I am glad I did, because all the contestants were phenomenal and Rhod's combination of neurodivergent thinking mixed with his desire to "defeat" Alex/Greg always left me on my edge of the seat. Sure the feuding with Greg got a little tiresome, but it was always awe inspiring seeing how he would short-circuit any given task.

the only board game content i have seen before is when will wheaton had a show on youtube. i only watched a few episodes. from what i remember is was kind of dry. not much excitement. this one seems way more chaotic and exciting.

I think it's a matter of having different goals for the series. Tabletop wanted to promote playing more tabletop games by showing entertaining people having fun playing them, and while episodes weren't what I'd call "exciting" they were usually interesting and entertaining.

This show seems to be leaning more into people being wacky and chaotic. I'm expecting less "this is how you play the game" and more "watch these people go off the rails".

Sudden Loud Noise posted:

And I think the biggest key to success with board game content is remembering that the game almost never matters, and it's just the purest form of "get together with my (not real) friends and watch them have fun and play a board game." So, getting a new group together for a new game every episode seems like a bit of a risk.

I strongly disagree; while you do need a good host (and possibly theme) to tie episodes together, I don't think changing casts and game each episode is any kind of risk. Back in the Geek & Sundry days both Tabletop and Game the Game thrived on changing out the games and most of the players each episode, so I think this show will do fine as long as you like Becca Scott.
