We saw a similar spike in minority religious support when W won re-election, driven by his religious rhetoric and policy: True, I do think to some extent Trump had a rare "reverse incumbent effect" where people were sick of him, but the traditional incumbent effect was probably still there in some way. Combined with all the pandemic stuff, vote by mail, etc. it all makes for just a very unpredictable election that's difficult to analyze even now.

I might be making some assumptions here, but the thing that makes this so hard is that in many cases, these people do have "legitimacy" and they at least generally do seem to see you as more than an adversary to overcome. In my experience, these are real people who seem to have functioning brains. But then on a dime, they seem to mutate into Twitter trolls who want to burn down any semblance of truth and reasonable discourse. I'm not saying I have a good answer. But I feel like "ignore them" is not really a sustainable strategy. Even though that's pretty much what I try to do.

I have literally no evidence to back this up but it's telling seeing how many prominent players have simply resigned rather than try to stand against this. Remember how a lot of us expected them to pretend they never supported Trump as soon as the election was over, so they could portray themselves as "the adults in the room" and hold on to as much of the remaining GOP voters as possible? I think what happened is, they still want that end result, but they've calculated that their best chance is not by being the adults in the room.

I think it's more of a TV Trope, we want to root for the inexperienced main character and it's satisfying to see him own everyone who said he couldn't make it (because he's me). If you're actually working somewhere IRL then it's usually the opposite, you're the "experienced" one who doesn't want to lift a finger to help the new guy. But because the government is viewed as one big TV show, the first maxim applies.

Abolishing the filibuster feels pretty politically safe to me. It takes like at least 5 minutes to explain it. Fox News will tell people to be mad about it for a week, then everyone will get bored and barely remember it happening. Hell, before all this I bet most people thought it was still a thing. (I think I did.)Riptor posted:Really? Several pregnant friends of mine have been vaccinated The official line is "we're currently more worried about what would happen to a pregnant woman who gets COVID, so probably go ahead and get it" but they still have no real way of guaranteeing whether the vaccine would mess with a pregnancy. So yeah, that's one of the cases where I get why people wouldn't get the vaccine.

It's hard to quantify exactly how the committee benefits from having Cheney on it, but I don't see any way it could really hurt either. It's not like they're making economic policy together or something. What pisses me off most of all, at a deeply personal level, is how much of the pushback against "white privilege" and related concepts is coming from professed Christians. If anything we should be first in line to talk about that stuff. It would be like getting personally offended when a preacher says "all have sinned". "What do you mean I'm a sinner?!" I mean that's actually our whole deal, or at least it's supposed to be. The idea that sin is so pervasive that it affects everything, literally even the soil, and it's in all of us from birth and has to be constantly fought even after "salvation". There are even explicit biblical examples of "national" sins that stick around for several generations until they're properly dealt with, even though nobody currently alive actually committed them. I really, truly hate the fact that this is so hard for us.

The "bombshells" they dropped are consistent with a virologist who didn't have all the information at the time, and changed his stance as new information came in. It's even simpler than that really. For the first few months the messaging was "stay home". There was no reason to wear masks because you weren't going anywhere. Later, the messaging became "ok I guess we have no choice but to let you go places now, but wear masks. Deal?"

But I don't think he'll be a Reagan or a W, I think he'll be a Nixon. Personality-wise he was much more in that vein. Just a miserable guy all around, but one who promised to be strong or whatever. Nixon's resignation certainly contributes to him being seen as indefensible, because nobody likes a loser, but to everyone not on the Trump train I think the capitol riot plays a similar role. zoux posted:https://twitter.com/kthorjensen/status/1419707399628369928 Isn't the truth more obvious? Bigger Biden, commonly abbreviated to BB, or more uncommonly BgB, is the slightly larger manifestation of Joe Biden that is said to appear in certain press conferences, contrasting to Regular Biden. The appearance of Bigger Biden at a particular press conference is generally, but not always, judged relative to the height of Jen Psaki, and as such Jen is the primary go-to frame of reference amongst Bigger Biden Theorists. Because of this, "No Jen Pics"(commonly abbreviated to NJP) are generally discouraged, as it is very difficult to determine Biden's height without Jen Psaki as a constant frame of reference. Whilst uncommon, the use of other White House staff to judge Biden's height are not unheard of. The second most common character to judge if Bigger Biden is in the video or not has generally been Nancy Pelosi, followed closely by Vice President Harris. The activity of combing White House press footage for instances of Bigger Biden is known as Bidening.

I'm not saying this in a "I told you so" sort of way, but I hope Cuomo's resignation is some measure of reassurance to those who thought the #MeToo movement was dead in the water. This actually feels to me like the most high-profile consequence of the movement so far -- a belligerent high-ranking politician who probably could've chosen to ride it out instead. Previously it's mostly just been actors losing royalties or whatever; politicians have been largely untouchable unless they're (1) not actually powerful or (2) have a soul
