The most recent bill re-designated the Mayor as the Governor and the City Council as the General Assembly. The state government would be unicameral and they would not incorporate any additional towns or cities in the state.

The new General Assembly would have 13 people, same as the current City Council. For reference Wyoming has a 60-member HoR and a 30-member Senate. Adding seats would probably make the transition to statehood take longer though.

She and Biden shouldn't have said anything because it could get a mistrial declared if they can prove it somehow influenced a jury. It would be really stupid for that to end up being the reason he got off. But, if the jury was properly sequestered, then it shouldn't matter.

If they can't say anything than nobody can because the jury isn't supposed to be watching the news at all.

Manchin and a couple of the less criminally insane Republicans (particularly his fellow WV Senator Capito, who is the main person behind this tiny package) have co-sponsored rural broadband bills. Manchin actually makes it a huge part of his website and has a form where West Virginians can send in their internet speed + what provider they are using.

Still, if they were directing this at Manchin in particular they'd raise that port/inland waterways number because West Virginia has a lot of those and the infrastructure is crap. Most of the towns in the state are lined up on the narrow slivers of flat land right next to the rivers/creeks so they are super vulnerable to flooding.

Jim Justice is the richest man in WV and I guess he just doesn't give a gently caress because compared to the other super red states, West Virginia had far and away the best COVID response. He was more like Hogan running MD than the other Trump hugging governors like Noem, DeSantis, and Abbott who made it into a political issue. I'm not super familiar with WV politics, I just recall being often surprised at the reasonableness of that state's response when compared what one would expect out of West Virginia.
The number one thing you need to know about BIG JIM is that he has no political convictions of his own. He will say and do anything to get elected. He was never really a Democrat, he just temporarily switched parties and ran as a centrist so he could avoid a competitive primary. He will do whatever is popular in West Virginia. 95% of the time this is a bad thing because the majority of West Virginians are fully FYGM types that have gone from being nominally "independent" to full on chud cultists in the span of 12 years, once Obama forced them to face the reality that the Democrats weren't the party of racists anymore. So most of what you get from BIG JIM is culture war bullshit, clinging to guns and religion, propping up the coal and natural gas industries, and putting on the good ol'boy persona to hide the fact that he's the closest thing the state has to an aristocrat.
BUT
this also means BIG JIM wants to give his constituents stuff and money, because everyone wants that as long as he avoids the word "welfare" or mentions any Democrat by name. So rather than adhering to the party dogma of not doing anything at all, he has been supportive of government spending And since so many in the state are high risk with COVID there is more pressure on him to actually have a decent pandemic response. He has been on the OPEN ER UP train because, again, that's what his constituents want, but he's got an actual mask mandate that he says he won't remove until they're at 70% vaccinated. There are/will be vaccine clinics at post offices, schools, county fairs, workplaces, etc so that people can get them without driving two hours to the nearest actual town. He's doing a good job in this particular area because he wants that Senate seat and being the hero who saved his state from the pandemic is a good way to get it.

Oh the even more impossible thing. loving hell. Since when did we need an amendment to create a new state? (Never?)

It's a DC thing. The 23rd amendment grants the District of Columbia (defined as being a district and not a state) 3 electoral votes. Even if you shrink this federal district to just the federal buildings (which is what's in the bill) you'll still have to deal with its electoral votes except it'll have zero people voting in it. The solution to this would be to just have the 3 electoral votes from that ghost district go to the popular vote winner (or the winner of the state of DC's vote) but that opens a can of worms and there is the question of whether that itself would be constitutional.

Churchill downs valets (pronounced in the british manner its horses not cars) haven't decided whether or not to strike tomorrow yet but its shaping up to be a complete clusterfuck if they do. Work stoppage on saddling the horses and no one can cash in their bets.

Yikes. The track workers union comprises the valets, outriders (the people who lead the horses to the starting gate), maintenance workers, concessions workers, basically everyone who makes the show go on. Grooms are non-union and often employed by the trainers instead of the track but they would not scab for the valets - they would just feed, water, clean stalls and leave.

Jockeys have their own (quite strong) union and they would be in solidarity with the track workers so if the strike goes there is no way the racing goes on.

edit: for what it's worth I have heard nothing about this from racing news outlets and they typically report every grievance that horsemen have (there is no love lost between track owners and everyone else involved in racing including the reporters) so I guess nobody is taking them that seriously...yet.

RICHMOND — An aide traveling with Republican Virginia gubernatorial candidate and state Sen. Amanda F. Chase brandished an AR-15 pistol this week at a man who Chase said threatened them during a "road rage" incident.

Audio from Chase’s campaign van was captured as the episode unfolded because Chase (Chesterfield) was participating by phone in a candidate forum put on by the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun-rights group. She was touting her staunch support for the Second Amendment when she abruptly excused herself.

“I’ve consistently voted against disarming law-abiding citizens, especially this patchwork — okay, we gotta go. I’m sorry, y’all,” she tells the VCDL audience before she’s heard sternly addressing the alleged road rager: “No. Stop.”

There’s a metallic clicking sound in the background and then a man in the van with Chase can be heard saying, “That’ll get your b---- a-- in the car, won’t it?”

What's the deal with the armed guards? Are they there because GUNS! VOTING SECURITY! or to intimidate the people doing the counting? That Amanda person says she'll have people verifying the integrity of the count. Will some of the armed guards be her supporters?

Amanda describes herself as "Trump in heels" and if anyone else gets more votes than her the election is clearly RIGGED. By "verifying the integrity" she means ensuring that she wins, and if it takes her own armed supporters to get that then that's what she'll do.

Amanda would be utterly terrifying if she was running in a deep red state. Virginia as a whole is blue enough to keep her out of a national office and as long as the Dems have the trifecta she can't do much harm in the state legislature. If this was Alabama or something she'd be en route to becoming one of the "rising stars" of the Trump wing of the party (which is to say, the entire party).
