I don’t like Apollo justice phoenix wrights character design is wearing a hoodie and beanie while he looks wistfully in the distance while he drops one-liners and cryptic clues. This dudes hobby is cleaning his toilet. He is not cool, he is lame. I do not like ChillPhoenix

I think they should just bite the bullet and do what they have clearly always wanted to do and have every case be one in which a Spunky Female Sidekick gets falsely accused of murder. There are so many that you can do a different one for each case. One for Maya, then Ema, then Kay, then Trucy. And then all of them for the final case.

Perhaps the lack of a spunky female defendant is why AJ just doesn't land right for people.

Like I get why (it'd have to be after the stuff with her family is explained, at least to some extent) but I do think it would do much better there in the game where she matters.

My opinion is that Apollo isn't very good in AA4 but he's a really good 'snarky sidekick' in AA5 where he does the straight man shtick pretty well.BIG FLUFFY DOG posted:I don’t like Apollo justice phoenix wrights character design is wearing a hoodie and beanie while he looks wistfully in the distance while he drops one-liners and cryptic clues. Is it really a hobby though, because he outsources that work to his employees in future games.

One thing I do like is that Phoenix actually adjusts fairly well into a more senior figure as the head of a practice, mostly because then he gets to be the put-upon boss dealing with the antics of his underlings as well.

This is exactly why I love AJ Phoenix the most of all. Faildad who competently raised a daughter through sheer charisma and grit us a great character turn for him imo. Also, there's a line where he mentions that he's a pianist who doesn't take requests which is just hilarious to me lol.

He’s a pianist who can’t play the piano. He just mimes it while songs play over the speakers. He’s really a poker player who doesn’t play for actual money ever so restaurants hire him as a fake piano player as a front for this completely legal scheme

To be fair, Phoenix making giant bluffs is kind of half his lawyer shtick. (The other half is a combination of worried flailing and then getting bailed out by Mia).

Yeah, AJ Phoenix's occupation is complete nonsense, it only makes even a little sense if you decide the completely unnecessary cloak-and-dagger secrecy is part of the draw, where people come to take part in this not-illegal underground not-gambling ring for the fantasy of it, as well as the potential bragging rights for winning a game against an undefeated poker champion. It kinda smacks of those times where a script gets "cleaned up" for release outside Japan, and considering both Dragon Quest and Pokemon got rid of their casinos on DS to (IIRC) comply with European anti-gambling regulations, I wonder if that happened here too and Phoenix is actually gambling in the Japanese version. But also apparently people in Japanifornia drink grape juice in wine glasses because the writer likes grape juice, even in Japan, so who knows.

I believe underground gambling dens are also illegal in Japan. So the Judge would still freak out that Phoenix has just admitted to another crime, and still require him to clarify that's it's entertainment only to not get jailed for that.

Nonalcoholic beverages in wine glasses is actually a massive franchise spanning running joke. In addition to AJ grape juice there's tomato juice in Juan Corida's hotel room in AA2 and a sparkling water toast in GAA1 (and GAA has Van Zieks' entire gimmick so it's definitely not censorship).

It's grape juice in Japanese as well, which makes it much funnier. I do wonder if it's a wink-wink-nudge-nudge thing, as from what I understand in Japan it's a long national tradition to circumvent gambling bans in hilariously blatant technicalities, or just Phoenix basically providing the ambience of an underground gambling den but without actual risk. It would also fit the theme that Phoenix is always a huge dork, and probably one to avoid actual alcohol and gambling when he has a minor in his care. Of course, Van Zieks never actually refers to it as wine, and I think he also only ever gets around to using that sipping animation he has maybe twice across the entire duology.

All of Apollo's clients are particularly difficult, it's kind of his thing. And I'm pretty sure van Zieks' wine is explicitly referred to as wine at some point.Commander Keene posted:Yeah, but if the card games they're playing are completely legal and above-board, why hire Nick as a "piano player" who never actually plays a piano? Why keep the poker hush-hush in a back room? Why not have signs in the restaurant advertising "play poker against the undefeated champion"? This is all extremely weird unless we assume it's all for some illicit atmosphere or something like that. I think Phoenix mentions that the illicit atmosphere is part of the sales pitch? He definitely romanticizes the hush-hush back room.

It's hard to name any particularly cooperative clients in the series, really. Oddly enough the times where you're defending other lawyers they're usually actually helpful, ironic since much like how doctors are said to make the worst patience, I feel like attorneys have gotta make the worst clients. Then again, maybe the ones who think they know better than the attorneys are by far the worst.

They could have made 4-2's client work just by having him be in on everything. He thinks he doesn't have much longer so he plans on taking the fall for his fiance who almost got murdered.

Okay someone help me out on the very very end of 4-3, I must be musically challenged. What am I supposed to be presenting when they ask you to prove he’s playing the piano one handed by using the mixing board? I would assume it’s the isolated piano track and one other isolated part during a specific section, but I’m drawing a blank.

It’s “simple” so it’s something a piano player could play one handed. It’s not a great case and that part doesn’t really prove loving anything tbh
