Biomutant is out now for PS4, XBONE, and PC this game has received mixed reviews, to say the least. There's a lot of jank here, but also a lot of fun to be had. huge patch released on June 1st, currently only for PC but soon to come for consoles. There's a whole lot of excellent fixes and changes here. patch notes posted:PC Specific BIOMUTANT is being made by Experiment 101, a Swedish studio headed by a former lead from Avalanche (Just Cause series & the surprisingly good licensed Mad Max game, among others). It's being published by THQ Nordic, which may raise a few eyebrows given their sometimes spotty record, but at the very least the devs have made it clear that they've been given license to do their own thing and release the game when they think its ready--that being said, given the apparent sandboxy nature of biomutant I wouldn't be surprised if there's some level of jank. Let's hope it's the fun kind! This game lets you create a small, fuzzy warrior with whom you'll roam an extremely colorful open-world, post-apocalyptic landscape, battling it out john woo style with fully customizable guns and melee weapons; not to mention a host of weird mutant abilities and technological enhancements ranging from powerfists and jetpacks to large vehicles like submarines and mechs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc93HHNk65s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19kdFP0-k1U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UANjcVtn4s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui39Rcb6fik 90 minute gameplay stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjR_Ex73L1A From the horse-like-creature's mouth: THQ Nordic posted:A NEW TAKE ON 3rd PERSON COMBAT FAQ of useful gameplay information : quote:Gameplay Questions preordering gets you the mercenary class. Looks fairly pretty and satisfying to play. There's one or two visual effects that seem kind of cheesy to me like the name display when you use certain abilities, but I guess that fits the genre. As for the Mercenary class lock, here's what several sites describe it as.quote:The Mercenary is a special class loadout playable from start through this DLC only. The Mercenary has dual-wield as a starting ability and is geared up with a classic Katana and the shorter Wakizashi blades to explain it in real-world terms. Simply put, it'll let you experience the world of BIOMUTANT as a classic samurai looking warrior from the start. Which implies that it's more like a starter kit rather than being permanently locked out of the items. Still sucks, but not as bad as it could be. All in all, i'll be following with interest, but i'd still rather see more details before shelling out on the preorder. Jossar fucked around with this message at 02:59 on Apr 23, 2021 |

I always find it funny when recent games take obvious visual/gameplay cues from Breath of the Wild. That game is so visually distinctive that it's immediately obvious when something is taking inspiration from it. Not to say that's a bad thing, of course. This looks really cool, kind of the game I was looking for from Immortals: Fenyx Rising. Something that's like BotW but less puzzle-oriented, rather than more puzzle-oriented. I am pretty excited for this. Also, that turtle in the gameplay trailer looks sick af Updog Scully fucked around with this message at 04:11 on Apr 23, 2021 |

To me it looks like a way up-res'd version of WoW's Pandaria, in terms of the colors and terrain in a lot of places. I think BotW feels more muted in a lot of ways. Definitely haven't had a game of this kind of ambitious semi-indie jank come around in a long time though, looking forward to it.

I've been waiting for this thing for years and kinda thought it might be dead or something for awhile. I feel slightly concerned that after so much nothing for so long that it's just popping up next month but hell, I wanna be a kung fu rocket raccoon so...

It's more the gameplay than the aesthetic, or I guess a fusion of the two. Something about the constant gliding and combat is very BOTW-like, especially with the slow motion segments. Also it's got furries in it.

Found a video with a bit more gameplay detail. It's a couple months out of date and done by a 3rd party reviewer, but it's still from 2021 so should be as reflective of the game as we're going to see until somebody early-access streams it. https://youtube.com/watch?v=zlSdFAnSGko Supposedly it's been pushed back all this time specifically to remove as much of the jank as possible, but who knows what will still creep in? I'm looking forward to this because it looks like a great throwback to the overambitious, underfunded Eurodisaster games that you just don't get a lot of anymore. It's like, when asked what they wanted added to the design doc the team just said, "yes."

For a game that is less then a month away THQ has been very quite on it. I figured by now there would be trailer on the different classes/skills/etc instead of the having to deal with leaks from magazines.

Staying cautiously optimistic about this game since it seems a bit too ambitious for a small studio’s first game. I remember the combat looked really janky in an earlier trailer, but that was a while ago.

Honestly I'm just happy to have a game that looks bizarre and probably very janky that I know nothing about and will just get to play and experience. It might be complete trash! But it's been kind of a long time since I've gotten to do that.

The way they are doing their graphics is quite smart. I see the same strategy in the new Ratchet & Clank footage. The scenes on screen seem so chock full of detail and activity, but only a tiny portion of it is actually rendered at 4k and with all the bells and whistles layered. The vast majority of the screen, everything not in the absolute direct active foreground, appears blurred in a cool bokeh type manner but is actually blurred and rendered at something like 720p with no post processing or bells and whistles of any sort. It works, and well, creating a cool bokeh “Macro” shot, while also allowing for insanely busy looking scenes that don’t actually require that much processing power to create. If you go into the videos of this, even more so the most recent Ratchet & Clank video, once you’re looking for it you can see the sharp line where the rendering splits. Ratchet actually is pretty aggregious and maybe 1/6 of the scene is actually rendered in full in some shots. Anyways. I just think it’s quite a creative way of getting away with this level of detail. I’m looking forward to the game too. But does it feel a bit like Ghost Recon Breakpoint to anyone else? Has nearly the same wheel and d-pad menus, nearly the same wide open world full of collectibles and discoverables. The open world aspects weirdly give off a very similar vibe. The biggest thing I worry is that this ends up being a mile wide and an inch deep, like breakpoint.

I think it's clear some aspects of biomutant are drawing from the Ubisoft open world formula, and I share your concern to some extent, but it also seems like this game is going to give you so much poo poo to play with that even if its not particularly deep it seems like it will be very varied (heh) also its not gonna have drones

This seems vaguely like Horizon Zero Dawn with more gameplay diversity where you're a raccoon. Don't want to get too hype (looking at you, The Outer Worlds ) but I dig how the action looks and VIVID it is.

yea the devs went mostly silent for a long time and they're a AA studio, I have a feeling we may see a decent marketing push over the next few weeks though. this game existed in a significantly playable state back in like, 2018, (and i think had a playable demo at gamescom in 2019?) and if you look at gameplay vids from then and compare them to the stuff they released this week you can see that combat, in particular, is way more polished looking now new short clip from twitter: https://twitter.com/Biomutant/status/1390677845337387014

Yeah, I pre-ordered like a sucker. Like you, I want to support smaller devs that are making something this vibrant looking and even if I find the narrator a little annoying, I can tell I'll enjoy the gameplay loop enoughto make the $50 I dumped on it at GMG worthwhile.

There is one thing I can't unsee on this game that is going to make me struggle to like it. The running animation doesn't match up with how fast they're actually traveling. Like the feet aren't synced up to the ground. I thought we fixed this back in 2008 Edit: I like the look of everything else in this game though TescoBag fucked around with this message at 10:01 on May 8, 2021 |

I do think it's likely there will be some visual jank and glitches in the game, given the amount of systems interacting with each other. I'm just hopeful most of the gameplay elements are functional.

This game is so up my alley I actually considered pre-ordering. But I never do that so I'm going to wait and see. I definitely expect some jank upon release just based on how open-world and ambitious this game is, and how many varied systems and abilities it is balancing. Honestly it reminds me more of Fallout 4 with better combat mechanics than anything else. The controls seem a little floaty and strange, just to fit everything in they wanted to, but I do think it could work. Definitely one of the most "interesting" triple A games to be coming out in recent memory and I'll be watching it very closely. It's not really a AAA studio product, and they pushed out the release by quite a lot to polish everything without resorting to forcing crunch on their employees. That doesn't guarantee it will be good but it's a lot more promising than whatever the hell they did with Cyberpunk 2077 lol (which I ultimately liked but was an INSANELY sloppy launch for a major company to have)
