This game looks very ambitious, wildly creative and quite unlike anything in recent memory. After several lengthy delays it's finally coming out on May 25, 2021!

BIOMUTANT is being made by Experiment 101, a Swedish studio headed by a former lead from Avalanche (Just Cause series & the surprisingly good licensed Mad Max game, among others). It's being published by THQ Nordic, which may raise a few eyebrows given their sometimes spotty record, but at the very least the devs have made it clear that they've been given license to do their own thing and release the game when they think its ready--that being said, given the apparent sandboxy nature of biomutant I wouldn't be surprised if there's some level of jank. Let's hope it's the fun kind!

This game lets you create a small, fuzzy warrior with whom you'll roam an extremely colorful open-world, post-apocalyptic landscape, battling it out john woo style with fully customizable guns and melee weapons; not to mention a host of weird mutant abilities and technological enhancements ranging from powerfists and jetpacks to large vehicles like submarines and mechs.

From the horse-like-creature's mouth:

THQ Nordic posted:

A NEW TAKE ON 3rd PERSON COMBAT
The martial arts style combat system allows you maximum freedom of movement and agility while mixing shooting, melee and powers from your mutations. Learning new Wung-Fu combat forms through progression and learning from masters youíll meet, will constantly add to your choices and make sure combat never gets old.

EVOLVE YOUR GAME-PLAY
You will be able to re-code your genetic structure to change the way you look and play. This will of course affect your attributes and in addition to this, exposure to bio-contamination in the world will lead to mutations like the Turtleform and Mucus Bubble, while exposure to radioactivity found in bunkers from the old world will affect your mind and unlock psi-mutations like telekinesis, levitation and more.

NEXT LEVEL OF CRAFTING
You are totally free when crafting weapons. Mix and match parts to create your own unique 1H or 2H slash and crush weapons. Revolvers, rifles and shotguns and add modifications like cork-screws and battery-powered chainsaw modules to bio-contaminated sludge vials adding to your combat arsenal. There are even characters youíll meet thatíll craft cool stuff for you and let you modify your Automaton - the scrap-toy sidekick!

GEAR UP FOR ADVENTURE
You are totally free when equipping your character. Not only when it comes to choosing weapons you created, but what type of gear you wear. Equip a gas-mask and an oxygen tank for exploring the Dead Zones, thermos-resistant clothes for venturing into cryonic areas or protective gear for taking on bio-contaminated creatures, the choice is up to you.

SURVIVE IN A VIBRANT OPEN WORLD
You are free to explore the world and what lies beneath its surface, by foot, Mekton, Googlide and Gullblimp or area unique mounts. Explore the dying wildland, the tunnels and bunker networks of the underworld, and find your way up the mountains or out in the archipelago. There are lots of discoveries to be made, mysteries to unravel, creatures to confront and weird characters to meet in this vibrant and colorful world.

AN UNUSUAL STORY WITH AN UNUSUAL END
Your actions play a major part in the unfolding of a story where End is coming to the New World. A plague is ruining the land and the Tree-of-Life is bleeding death from its roots. The Tribes stand divided, in need of someone strong enough to unite them or bring them all down...

You are guided through the world by a Storyteller that narrates every step of your journey, but itís your actions and choices thatíll decide how your story of survival ends.
gotta save that mana tree!!

Looks fairly pretty and satisfying to play. There's one or two visual effects that seem kind of cheesy to me like the name display when you use certain abilities, but I guess that fits the genre. As for the Mercenary class lock, here's what several sites describe it as.

quote:

The Mercenary is a special class loadout playable from start through this DLC only. The Mercenary has dual-wield as a starting ability and is geared up with a classic Katana and the shorter Wakizashi blades to explain it in real-world terms. Simply put, it'll let you experience the world of BIOMUTANT as a classic samurai looking warrior from the start.

Which implies that it's more like a starter kit rather than being permanently locked out of the items. Still sucks, but not as bad as it could be.

All in all, i'll be following with interest, but i'd still rather see more details before shelling out on the preorder.

I always find it funny when recent games take obvious visual/gameplay cues from Breath of the Wild. That game is so visually distinctive that it's immediately obvious when something is taking inspiration from it.

Not to say that's a bad thing, of course. This looks really cool, kind of the game I was looking for from Immortals: Fenyx Rising. Something that's like BotW but less puzzle-oriented, rather than more puzzle-oriented. I am pretty excited for this.

Also, that turtle in the gameplay trailer looks sick af

To me it looks like a way up-res'd version of WoW's Pandaria, in terms of the colors and terrain in a lot of places. I think BotW feels more muted in a lot of ways.

Definitely haven't had a game of this kind of ambitious semi-indie jank come around in a long time though, looking forward to it.

I've been waiting for this thing for years and kinda thought it might be dead or something for awhile. I feel slightly concerned that after so much nothing for so long that it's just popping up next month but hell, I wanna be a kung fu rocket raccoon so...

It's more the gameplay than the aesthetic, or I guess a fusion of the two. Something about the constant gliding and combat is very BOTW-like, especially with the slow motion segments. Also it's got furries in it.

Found a video with a bit more gameplay detail. It's a couple months out of date and done by a 3rd party reviewer, but it's still from 2021 so should be as reflective of the game as we're going to see until somebody early-access streams it.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=zlSdFAnSGko

Supposedly it's been pushed back all this time specifically to remove as much of the jank as possible, but who knows what will still creep in?

A Japanese magazine apparently got some hands on time with the character creator recently, there's more details about races, classes and character creation than we've seen so far gleaned from the article here:

I'm looking forward to this because it looks like a great throwback to the overambitious, underfunded Eurodisaster games that you just don't get a lot of anymore. It's like, when asked what they wanted added to the design doc the team just said, "yes."

This fucking day....

For a game that is less then a month away THQ has been very quite on it. I figured by now there would be trailer on the different classes/skills/etc instead of the having to deal with leaks from magazines.

Staying cautiously optimistic about this game since it seems a bit too ambitious for a small studioís first game. I remember the combat looked really janky in an earlier trailer, but that was a while ago.

Honestly I'm just happy to have a game that looks bizarre and probably very janky that I know nothing about and will just get to play and experience. It might be complete trash! But it's been kind of a long time since I've gotten to do that.

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

The way they are doing their graphics is quite smart. I see the same strategy in the new Ratchet & Clank footage. The scenes on screen seem so chock full of detail and activity, but only a tiny portion of it is actually rendered at 4k and with all the bells and whistles layered. The vast majority of the screen, everything not in the absolute direct active foreground, appears blurred in a cool bokeh type manner but is actually blurred and rendered at something like 720p with no post processing or bells and whistles of any sort. It works, and well, creating a cool bokeh ďMacroĒ shot, while also allowing for insanely busy looking scenes that donít actually require that much processing power to create.

If you go into the videos of this, even more so the most recent Ratchet & Clank video, once youíre looking for it you can see the sharp line where the rendering splits. Ratchet actually is pretty aggregious and maybe 1/6 of the scene is actually rendered in full in some shots.

Anyways. I just think itís quite a creative way of getting away with this level of detail. Iím looking forward to the game too. But does it feel a bit like Ghost Recon Breakpoint to anyone else? Has nearly the same wheel and d-pad menus, nearly the same wide open world full of collectibles and discoverables. The open world aspects weirdly give off a very similar vibe. The biggest thing I worry is that this ends up being a mile wide and an inch deep, like breakpoint.

I loved the poo poo out of wildlands and was disappointed with breakpoint too. I think it's clear some aspects of biomutant are drawing from the Ubisoft open world formula, and I share your concern to some extent, but it also seems like this game is going to give you so much poo poo to play with that even if its not particularly deep it seems like it will be very varied (heh)

also its not gonna have drones

Still just over here wondering why no one is using this engine to make a Redwall game.

This seems vaguely like Horizon Zero Dawn with more gameplay diversity where you're a raccoon.

Don't want to get too hype (looking at you, The Outer Worlds ) but I dig how the action looks and VIVID it is.

It's a smaller dev IIRC and was delayed a bunch. I think that's it.

yea the devs went mostly silent for a long time and they're a AA studio, I have a feeling we may see a decent marketing push over the next few weeks though.

this game existed in a significantly playable state back in like, 2018, (and i think had a playable demo at gamescom in 2019?) and if you look at gameplay vids from then and compare them to the stuff they released this week you can see that combat, in particular, is way more polished looking now

the THQ rep who made the gameplay preview videos released this week has been actively responding to questions on twitter and mentioned specifically that they set the difficulty to easy to make the videos so that they would look like a badass/ not embarrass themselves

if this game is relatively bug free I think it could surprise a lot of people. we'll see in a few short weeks!

that's not really the kind of thing I'd notice or care about, but to each their own. I do think it's likely there will be some visual jank and glitches in the game, given the amount of systems interacting with each other. I'm just hopeful most of the gameplay elements are functional.
