I hope this show doesn't turn out to be dumb. It's fairly solid for the most part but slips here and there. It's also way overscored, lots of *emotional music here* stuff like, I get it, show, give it a rest.

So if I enjoyed True Detective (and I did, all seasons) would I enjoy this?

I don't think it's as well written as S1 of True Detective but it's your standard grim detective procedural so far, can't say for sure until it's done though. It's not perfect but I'm enjoying it well enough and nowadays I tend to not get into shows like this.

This show was okay. Stumbled here and there and my feeling on the finale is that it was a bit too over-eager to squeeze the last bit of drama out of everything when I would've prefered if it had been a little more drawn out. For me this had the appeal of something like The Killing which is another flawed show I like.

Also not sure if it was intentional to have Guy Pearce once again driving what looked like an open-top Jaguar XK8 but if it was a Memento reference then it's worth the chuckle.

I thought True Detective S2 was too convoluted and all over the place. Vince Vaughn was alright though.

S3 is more grounded and has a lot of good performances, Ali and Dorff in particular, and scratches the same itches S1 does. I'd say skip S2 and give S3 a watch. Neither really live up to S1 I don't think.
