I assume they caught him sharing the torrent, then when they seized his computer & cracked his incredibly secure password could just look up what he did in the program he used

So the stuff they have about him accessing CSA on the darkweb has information like timestamps and stuff. Is this case then likely the result of the big German darkweb bust a week or so ago or is it more likely something that started after being caught sharing on a torrent?

The reason I ask is that i was under the impression that it was incredibly difficult to track darkweb usage which is why it was such a hard problem to deal with but the police having actual logs of him accessing sites would indicate otherwise.

Or am I just ignorant on how this kind of forensics work?

It’s also possible he’s not that bright and massively hosed up in covering his tracks.

The investigation into Duggar started a year ago, unless I’m reading the articles wrong or the dark web busts are also the work of a year-long investigation. I bet most child rapists are extremely dumb and simply get away with it because nobody’s watching them. Like the child molester cop that got unrestricted access to this creep when he was 14 couldn’t have been very smart, but he only got caught after years of doing it.

You'd think they'd actually check some of these things for the house he's being released to. It'd be super easy to tell if they had proper internet, for example. Or a gun safe.

For real, I legitimately don’t get why the judge thought this was a good idea. Even in her own filing explaining her reasoning, she admits that she’s only decided to let him out on a razor-thin margin, and everything else she outlined would seem like an argument against releasing him.

The judge is well within her discretion here and the government hosed up by not inquiring more into his caretakers' relationship to the family. This, in theory is how pretrial detention is supposed to work for everyone, not just privileged white people. Until you're actually convicted of a crime it's hosed up to punish you for it and that's why it's the government's burden to prove the risk is too great.

But y'all are missing the really hosed up thing. Look back at the evidence they had. Presume for a minute that it took them until just now to actually crack his super secure password. On the day of the search in 2019, they had his IP traced to hosed up files, information he was alone at the place where the hosed up files were shared from, and his sketchy rear end "oh you must be here about the child porn" statements.

That's absolutely sufficient PC for an immediate arrest and charge for almost anyone else but this dude's been free to teach Sunday School until now.

My weird feeling based on the fact they have the exact dates two years ago when he downloaded it is that the police had gained control of some major darkweb cp site and kept it up as a honeypot. Now they've decided to end that operation and so they can blow its cover by charging people like Josh.

The detectives found Josh sharing CSA over Bittorrent. He had Tor installed on the Linux partition, which is presumably how he found the torrent in the first place. My guess is Josh "only guy with two Ashley Madison accounts" Duggar is so loving dumb he didn't realise he was sharing his torrent and anyone could find him.

The detectives found the file in May 2019. They got his name and the dealership's address in October 2019, and raided the dealership in November 2019.

They confiscated his IPhone and personal computer along with the dealership computer, and were able to show he sent a text to Anna saying (paraphrasing) "sorry babe working late tonight" like 10 minutes after opening a CSA file, which they're using to establish proof that he was the one who opened the file.

The transcript below also claims the government can demonstrate that it was specifically his computer accessing Tor sites and downloading CSA from them. It's not clear how they did that. They are also using his SMSs to demonstrate it was actually him.

This, and also judges have to rule on precedent from higher courts and past cases, the last thing they want to do is rule from an emotional level, and give this piece of poo poo any grounds for an appeal.

Additionally, the feds are going to be keeping an eye on him, and if his dumb rear end tries some poo poo like using WPS to bypass the wifi password, that's immediate grounds to revoke his bail and slam him in jail until his trial, possibly with new, fun charges added.

The vast majority of busts at least in the US are from people sharing on torrent sites. Generally they search for popular child porn file names and then get a warrant through the ISP. There are obviously a lot bigger busts from the dark web sites but those require a lot more work and tech know how.

So that "top five worst" video, to give a further indication of how bad it is, once upon a time it apparently cost $10000 to stream it on the dark web. Its producer, an Australian man who was in the Philippines, is serving a life sentence for those crimes, including the murder of a girl who was raped and tortured in a different video. His crimes and videos were so heinous that there were considerations of reinstituting the death penalty in the Philippines just for him.
