Chat thread what are some good games with job systems? Loved them in FF5 and Tactics and dabbled in fire emblem.

Unironically Final Fantasy X-2.

Dressspheres are legitimately amazing.

FFXII with the Zodiac Job System in International is pretty cool but you can't swap jobs so not quite the same feeling.

Oh and of course, Tactics Ogre which FFTactics is really basically Tactics Ogre 2.

Star Fox Command seemed like a neat idea since it sounded like an attempt to redo Star Fox 2 and I liked how it seemed to have just a bunch of endings and paths to go down but gameplay wise it didn't seem to be the same kind of stuff over and over again.

I do love how one of the endings is Falco and Fox deciding to gently caress off from the mercenary/bounty hunter business and become "G-Zero" racers.

Also that another ending was just Krystal just noping out of the franchise.

Assault seemed like a decent game but the wing missions looked boring.

Don't know how accurate Andy Ruins Everything is, but he did a bit on modern art where the main gist of it is that skill doesn't matter, it's about finding the right people to help you get in on the money laundering scheme.

Not exaaaaaaactly true but close. The main grift with modern art is that it's a product for rich people. The structure of what we now think of as the modern art industry mostly comes out of NYC in the 60s-70s where rich people would try to larp as humans by going to these parties of 20-somethings who were making art for fun and would try to fit in the only way they knew how - by spending millions of dollars hosting galleries and becoming patrons for the kids who were throwing the parties. That's also part of the reason why art critics and dealers are such a big dealer in the NYC scene, because rich people just want to be seen as cool and don't actually know what is cool and what isn't so they mostly just prop up whoever gets good reviews. Jackson Pollock famously got into a huge fight with his good friend for giving him a middling review. I forget how long ago it was but NYC was looking to pass a law about disclosing the market value of artwork and everyone shut it down immediately because, like I said, it's a grift to extract money from rich people.

The money-laundering component of the art world is more going on with museums and school donations where the overall investments are much higher

I'm almost kind of glad that the Playstation has so many generations under their belt now that we've got people just as upset about the status of 2000-era franchises and like, that there's been no new Sly Cooper title for almost a decade and Sucker Punch were fools not to keep the series going.

Like it relieves me that it wasn't just franchises from the 80's and 90's that people formed such a bond with.

While the combat system is pretty good, Octopath traveler is very dire in its writing and localization, and its failed stylistic experimentation, disjointed story structure and unnatural sounding dialogue end up making the entire thing feel very sterile and boring. Oh it has voice acting too, and it is very bad.

I think there was only one or two wing missions in Assault and they were pretty short, usually they're the intro to the rest of the mission. Also that game had some really cool hosed up parts. Like, hey, remember when Pigma was straight-up killed and his body was turned into a spaceship like some sort of Lynchian horror movie?

I'm another who bounced off Octopath hard, but I had it built up in my head as some kind of FF IV-VI pastiche when it's more of an homage to old school SaGa games with a FFV job system. I have this idea that if maybe you approached it as some kind of interconnected SaGa game and maybe didn't try to do everyone's story in one run it might be more palatable. I'm not sure how well that would work though.

I am looking forward to Project Triangle Strategy but it looks like it will actually have a story and the characters might have a reason to hang out.

as an octopath liker, it's biggest problem is that it's extremely confused about what it wants to be, because it is simultaneously a saga pastiche and an homage to classic FF even though those are two totally incoherent objectives. it'd be a much better game if it was like saga frontier and 8 separate but intertwined stories in the same world, but it really is designed for you to do everything in one run

also remember, triangle strategy has zero relation to octopath despite what they'd like you to think, just like octopath isn't actually a followup to bravely default

I really liked Octopath but not for any of the reasons that the game really feels like it wants you to. I like it in the same way that I really like FF12 and Soul Nomad for having elaborate methods of getting gear where you start with a piece of string and then trade it for a paperclip and do that a million times and you end up with endgame equipment in chapter 2

The remake apparently did well enough to remake Zwei

As far as how it plays after patching its nice and smooth and looks quite good. The "problem" I guess is its a fairly bare bones port of a game with a whopping 6 levels and a final boss. There are some neat cheats they added (god mode, speed up, one hit kills, etc) but for 25 bucks its a lot to ask unless you absolutely love Panzer Dragoon.

Wait for a 1+2 double pack I guess?

Edit: there is a joke achievement of sinking 100 or more hours into the game.

Played it on a Series X. Some minor lack of smoothness in the opening cutscene, seemed built in not a like hardware thing, but gameplay all smooth and good. My understanding it was the initial Switch version that came out before every other one that ran terribly.
