He's being perceived as someone who can be a legit second best player on a contender soon, if not already. That feels significant in terms of narrative.

So, someone on reddit managed to confirm that there was such a thing as a fan vote. https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/nvi2ji/conti_derrick_rose_got_a_first_place_vote_for_mvp/h13j6c3/ The NBA made some tweets over the course of two weeks in May that received very little engagement, and (at least the one linked in this reddit post) didn't even clearly state that the vote would count toward the real award.
