Because it can be construed as endorsement, which OP has clarified it is not. But in the hypothetical that we had characters based off say, Sargon of Akkad or whatever I think it's fair for people to be questioning the choices made leading to that decision.

The Bastion
StellarX
CEO Olivia Gardner - Emergency-coordinator of the United Nations.

With the exception of a handful of pet cats or dogs smuggled aboard The Bastion after it's construction the only other animals that made it off Earth (that weren't taken away in one of the Hegira ships) were rats and pigeons which were abundant in the lower sections of the habitat. This let to an old adage or joke among the Lowers - "What do you call a rat that has infested the Upper sections - Secretary General". It took on an entirely different connotation after the revelation of UNSG Vance Blair's real past, and that one of their own had indeed made it to the very top of United Nations society.
And now the rats are running the show, in more ways than one.
This whole awful mess has gone on for too long. The Bastion, the United Nations, Upper... Lower. It all needs to change. Vance Blair was right.

Deuxième-Versaille is near abandoned, the great UNHQ sitting empty as the other members of the security-council are either running, hiding or in full opposition to everything we once stood for. All their associated staff and teams are now missing, there are only a handful of people here, mostly the late UNSG's aides and supervisors and the few StellarX employees still brave or foolish enough to stand with me here. UN marines have cordoned off the nearby streets, but should the Imperialists come in full force there will be nothing to stop them, it's a good thing then I suppose that all ten billion people that live down there beneath us have become as tired of all this just as Cross and his cronies, they are proving a far bigger nuisance than we could with our hopes of maintaining 'order'.

This is not just 2269 all over again, this cannot be stopped, all I can hope to do is keep as many people alive as possible as we transition into... whatever it is we'll be on the other side.

The Bastion was built with all manner of defences and lockdown procedures, but they had always assumed the threat would be coming from the outside, never from within, and certainly never between the very forces that make up the security-council itself.

While we have tangible control of Paris, beneath that is free game. People's Militias, hundreds of thousands sometimes even millions strongly wrestle with the corps that have sided with Cross for control of the Mexico-City and Manila wings where all the Bastion's production takes place. Some corps have been entirely overtaken by their workers, the Uppers that once led them cast out and left to fend for themselves in the chaotic city as they themselves try to keep things running for the sake of providing food or supplies for the other Lowers. Some corps (very few) have willingly given up their power, sensing the way things are going and hoping they can at least be given some mercy when the people come. A large faction of the corps however still claim to be neutral, believing this will all blow over and in a year or two they can go back to business like usual, just as centuries past. They just find themselves having to fight both Cross and the Lowers at once.

Congo
MS-Talaria of Mercury
In high orbit near Jupiter

The Talaria of Mercury was one of four ships part of a trade convoy to Monteverde - one of the huge "leisure-resort planets' ' of the Las Estrellas group. It was always a point of contention and deeply ironic that travel between stars was near instantaneous - less than twenty four hours usually, but to do that one had to make the years long journey to reach beyond a star's gravity well. Thanks to ever-advancing technology the time taken was always shrinking a little year by year. It once took a ship a decade to travel from Bastion to New Yangtze at the center of Imperial China, now one could travel almost halfway across the galaxy in that time - which was exactly how far Monteverde was.

Monteverde in the Oiz-tay system (if the planet Las Estrellas was the 'Vegas of space' then Monteverde was the 'Reno')

Sharif Momin, comms-officer of the Talaria was slumped lazily against his communications panel with his head propped up by one hand as his eyes flicked over the dead dials - the immense cosmic storm that had consumed the Solar System and other systems near by had severely hampered or outright ceased communications - which kind of made him a superfluous part of the bridge crew right now. He couldn't even watch his New Indian soap operas, it'd all be reruns anyway, New Delhi was still undergoing it's regime change. What's worse the storm made sublight travel much slower and it was going to take twice as long to reach beyond the Kuiper Belt and escape Sol's influence. He was in hell.

He cycled through all the comms-channels again, the third time that hour, getting static and interference from the storm but then he could have sworn he heard something on one channel which had always been dead. He slowly dialed back to it, hearing a faint signal coming through but couldn't make it out. He put in a request to engineering to momentarily divert energy from other systems to the comms array atop the ship (something that took a little more out of his paycheck each time he did it).
His eyes widened and face paled as he heard the message, holding the headset close to his ears so the sound wouldn't be heard by anyone else around him.

"Mayday mayday mayday! The Bastion is under attack! Former secretary-general Patrick Cross has murdered Vance Blair and is attempting a coup. He has the support of the Congo corporation and Standard Dynamics. The security council has been dissolved. The Lowers have risen up as one, Bastion-Security-Forces ineffective, UN military holding Paris but will not last. This is emergency-coordinator Olivia Gardner of StellarX, assuming control of the Bastion. We need urgent help. If you can hear this then you must relay it until it reaches the UNN, the fate of the Bastion and United Nations is at stake. Message repeats."

Sharif felt his heart racing and he slowly looked across to the other bridge crew members, especially the captain, who unfortunately caught his gaze.

"Momin, pick up something?"

The comms-officer stared at the captain, the staunch Upper born and raised in Tehran in his family's faux-Tudor style mansion. While he, was born in Manila and only through the luck of attending at the Research-Institute did he ever get a place aboard a starship.

"Uh, no, captain. A distress call is all, a stranded ship in the storm" Sharif lied.

The captain scoffed and smirked "To bad for them, delete the message. We have a schedule to keep"

"Aye sir, right away"

Sharif turned back to his panel, was this it?, he thought, the uprising, revolution, rebellion... it had almost become a joke among Lowers for just how unlikely it ever seemed to achieve despite it being all they yearned for. And now his very employers were trying to stop it. The captain upon hearing this message and learning that Congo was assisting Cross would immediately tell him to delete the message and if possible block it going any further. He listened to the message again, and again, each time his resolve growing a little more.

"Engineering" the comms-officer tapped at his headset again, connecting him to the engineering-bay.

"You again, Momin. What is it now?" came back the Welsh Ankara-born chief-engineer.

"I'm gonna need another power-allocation to the comms array"

"Again? What is there to possibly hear out there"

"Just do it. And... I'm going to need you to divert as much power as is possible, even if it affects other systems on the ship."

"What!? What's gotten into you, you'll be owing Bozos all your pay at this point.

"Damnit Owens, just do it" Sharif raised his voice as much as he dared

"Well alright mate, your funeral"

It may literally be his funeral, when the other three ships in the trade-convoy would hear. The cosmic storm seemed less intense out here at Jupiter, and slowly dissipated out toward Pluto, with the Talaria of Mercury's comms at max he could blast the message out across the entire outer Solar System and hopefully beyond.

Conferencia de Sindicatos de Patria Grande
The Ernesto Sabato
Somewhere in the outer Solar System

It had always been quite humorous to the Patria Grande that despite the UN being thir fiercest rivals they had never once closed their borders to the PG vessels - and in fact allowed the ships of the dreaded 'anarchists' to travel through their space - as long as they didn't dock at any stations or planets - and paid the tolls. It was evident to the UN ever since Lauren Ericsson first accidently ventured into Patria Grande space, that the Syndicalist Conference was fully aware of them and everything they were doing. But the syndicalists had always seen it a fatal flaw of the corporates of the UN - that in the end their insatiable desire for riches trumped even the desire to keep out their biggest foe.

The Ernesto Sabato was a medium size science vessel of some 120 people, on it's way to the Iguo Veil for experiments out in the nebula, when the cosmic storm hit.

"Camarada-Capitana. I think you should hear this"

Captain Ocana motioned a hand to her officer and he transferred the message he had received to her headset, hearing a distress call from The Bastion of all places. They knew who Cross was, they knew what he was capable of and they certainly would not want him leading the UN again - either directly or from behind the shadows. And the 'Lowers' were in revolt? The President of the Conference would want to hear this.

"Relay this to Nuevo Argentino at once, broadcast it on all channels. Though considering this storm and how far away they are I doubt their UNN will ever hear this"

We survived... for three years in Azha, surrounded on all sides and constantly beset by enemy fire, but we survived that. This storm or whatever it is has ripped through the fleet and in half a year has destroyed over half my ships and tens of thousands of UNN personnel have lost their lives. The NAF ships at the edge of the system seem less affected, they still have some semblance of control over their ships and every so often a missile or two will come streaking in towards us - the only thing saving us is the immense debris field that surrounds us - our dead comrades.

"XO. Order the fleet to prepare for an emergency retreat. Flight Officer Boro, begin powering up the hyperdrive."

There was a somber silence across the bridge of the UN-Monarch as the bridge crew looked to the Admiral

"Admiral" XO Southers leaned over to Curtis, talking in a hushed tone "The last time the UNN did an emergency jump - there was not a single survivor."

"Look around you, Andrew. We're already dead. Prepare for jump"

Emergency-coordinator Gardner

it's becoming harder to know who to trust. Obviously all of Blair's former people are entirely committed to what is going on, but the other remaining staff of the UNHQ and all the Upper UN functioning bodies - even my own employees in StellarX - there is no telling who is sympathetic to Cross' cause, how many of them are willing to sell us out at the first opportunity. In secret, with help from the few most trusted allies I have left, we devise a list of all that may pose a security risk, and order the UN soldiers in Paris to detain them at once over the next few days. They decry me, despise my name, declare me a traitor and call me every terrible thing under the sun. To hell with them.

Press-summit held by the Upper Residents Association, being shown live on Bastion Broadcast Corporation main news channel

From the vast lawn of the Spurgeon residence, a huge neoclassical mansion nestled in upper Tehran, a batch of news channels had amassed as the leader of the URA was giving a speech decrying the ongoing chaos and the actions of near enough everyone that wasn't a member of the URA or other assorted ultra-Upper elites. Malcolm had already been ranting for a number of minutes and it was sounding like he was reaching the apex of his big speech.

"Now is a time for caution! The rash actions of the former secretary-general and acting emergency-coordinator are counter to everything we stand for. We should be united in bringing back order and discipline to the Lowers. The material damage amassed by their little tantrum is already nearly-immeasurable. Hundreds of trillions of dollars gone, it's outrageous! As the chairman of the Upper Residents Association, believe me when I say I know what is right for all of us. The disastrous policies and 'reforms' of the imposter Vance Blair has led us here. But Patrick Cross' actions will-"

He trailed off as he glanced off-camera to the side of the small stage he was stood atop, a smug self-assured smile on his face suddenly.

"Ah, speak of the devil, here, is Mr Cross himself. Perhaps he can join me up here and explain himself"

Spurgeon turned, raising his left hand to shake Cross', the leader of the Imperialists strode up to him, clasping his offered hand tightly and holding him in place as he raised his other hand - pistol firmly held - and without a seconds hesitation put the gun to the URA leader's head and pulled the trigger.

There was hysteria and screaming as the convened journalists and URA dignitaries jumped up from their seats and fled in every direction in blind panic across the lawn of the Spurgeon residence, only one or two brave cameramen continued operating their gear as Cross let go of Spurgeon's hand as he crumbled to the floor. Cross turned and looked to the camera directly in front of him, walking up to the edge of the stage and sitting down, placing his pistol at his side.

"Zoom in. I don't want that unpleasantness inframe" He glanced at the strong-willed crew member behind the big camera.

"Bastion! I know you're all watching, I hope you're doing well." Cross paused, glancing over his shoulder at Spurgeon's dead body -now out of fame- then back to the camera with a look of contempt

"You have been led by these pompous uppity charlatans for far too long. He's right that the late great Blair's reforms are disastrous but they have shown us just exactly how misguided Uppers have been all this time. For the longest time, the military was the only place a Lower and Upper may be side by side, and I have seen my fair share of noble and courageous Lower-born United Nationals. When I led the special-operations-branch, many of my best operatives were Lowers, hell, somewhere even Regulus. There will be a place for you all, in the new order, I can assure you. The corrupt and sycophantic parasites that sit atop the Bastion will be removed, your oppression will come to an end and those of you, most diligent and dutiful, will finally have the lives you yearn for and deserve.
A bright future awaits us Bastion."

Conferencia de Sindicatos de Patria Grande
Nuevo Argentina
Convening of the union of unions in the great conference chambers at the heart of the CSPG capital - Proudhon

"- And that concludes the matter of distribution quotas for planetary and habitat aid in the ongoing storm crisis. We move on to our final subject of this month's convention - Last night we received a message from our science vessel enroute to the Iguo Veil, in the operation to find something that may help us to alleviate the storms or predict their future occurrence. The Ernesto Sabato is currently at the far edge of the Sol System, about to depart for EZ Aquarii, but while passing through the heart of the United Nations, the ship received a distress call - from El Bastión." The president of the conference paused as their was excited and curious murmuring amongst the gathered representatives and he raised a hand to calm them once more.

"Something big, is going down aboard that unfortunate chabolas. The reformist Vance Blair is dead, slain at the hand of Patrick Cross, a former secretary-general from four decades ago. For those who have not been keeping up with our misguided brethren south of the border, Cross is an unabated and unashamed fascist, who is making a grab for power, the corporations have turned on one another, the people have risen up."

"Do you propose an intervention? The Fleets are already deep inside the Empire's territory helping the Russian diaspora break free, so they may travel freely to Tercero-Moscú" The representative of the Nuevo Bolivia council of unions asked

"We have the Humanitarian Fleet. I am not proposing a full-scale liberation war such as we have currently committed ourselves to against the Africans. But, the UN has centralized it's entire powerbase within that one habitat, what happens there affects the rest of them. Their fleet is a thousand lightyears away fighting the New Americans, the Humanitarians can slip in easily - and well, they do allow our vessels passage through their space.

"Lone science ships and trading haulers passing through to powers beyond them, yes. I'm not sure how they would feel about The Broadsword and her escorts suddenly crossing their border." overseer of the Mercedario habitat raised saliently

"Besides, the Humanitarian Fleet is still busy in Nuevo Delhi, there is still much work to be done there and there are many Indians that still need aid across the surface of that desert world." representative of the Nuevo Peru council of unions quickly added, motioning to the New Delhi representative, the Indian anarchist leader for whom this was still only his third attendance of the conferences.

"Both true. But we may never have an opportunity like this again. Worse yet - if Cross should gain complete control, the UN may become something far worse than we've ever had to contend with before.
The Isohon system, with its four habitats, is only two jumps away from Kinwock and New Delhi." The president looked to Vijaya Amble "I am sure you would agree, the situation on Nuevo Delhi has improved considerably in the last year alone, a far cry from a decade ago for your people. Do you believe you still need the services of the Humanitarian Fleet?"

"No, comrade-president. There is still much work to be done in New Delhi and Mumbai, but I feel it is now fully within the power of the Indian people to finish the great work you all started when you freed us from the Republic. I will confer with the leaders of the regional councils, but I believe they will likely approve of aiding the people of the Bastion free themselves of UN tyranny."

"Goddamn it, Jon. This is serious! We've never gone this long without hearing from the Bastion. The UNN in Polaris has gone completely silent too - it's like they're simply not there anymore, which means.. they either had to fall back, or worse"

"That's Commodore McCreary. Ah, and don't worry, Hayden knows what's she doing."

"I'm going to head back to the Bastion?"

"Yeah, and so you can hold the front. The Lance can be at Sol and back in six months with this storm going on. I'm sure the oh so great Danger Close can survive for that long without the Lance to hold your hand again"

"This is General Moss of the UNMC. We have become separated from the UNN after our retreat from the Polaris system. Twin systems of the Regulus are not currently affected by the storm are they are not in need of help. Unable to regain contact with the UNN, no current objectives from the Bastion. Returning to Sol to resupply and repair transport brigs."

The Bastion

After months of intense fighting across both Mexico City and Manila, Imperialist-aligned forces have managed to capture increasingly more strategic locations - major manufacturing complexes, transport hubs. The even manage to win a number of crucial battles against the Union of Shipwrights, who have held the most dire defence of the Blair Industries drydocks.

When defeat seemed all but certain, the surviving Shipwrights and any rebels from the surrounding areas involved in the fighting against Congo-StanDy forces and their corrupt Security-Force allies, decided to board the two partially complete battleships and unberth at once from the Bastion. Without ample life support, supplies, food or even fuel the two ships are left to slowly drift out ever further from the Bastion, they have just months to live. But at least they have stopped the Imperialists from gaining control of two of the most powerful warships in the galaxy.

This Admiral Ramon, we have crossed the border into the United Nations, little to no space traffic. Altair system is clear of the storm, sensors detect that Barnard's Star is also clear, we have a straight route to Sol.

Altair Station has not pinged us requesting us to pay the toll, likely suspecting we are an invasion or raiding force. Do not approach the station and instead skirt out the edge of the system.
Travelling at full burn, expected arrival four months.

Hanoi

Upon returning from 'beyond the Nightmare' Commander Victoria Conroy did not go into science such as her contemporary at StellarX - Vance Blair, instead she pursued a career in finance. Her investment-brokerage firm would go on to see success after success and she quickly soared to the movers and shakers of bustling Cavang Street - the central business district of Hanoi and where almost all of the UN's capital was located, bought and sold. It did not take long at all for her to become the chairwoman of the Bastion Stock Exchange.

Considering the number of banks along Cavang Street it was not unusual to see huge armoured trucks coming and going along the wide London-Planetree lined avenue. It was quite rare to ever see them parked on the sides of the roadway instead of the usual luxury sedans of local executives, typically they'd exit and enter their bank's underground garage and that'd be that. It was especially unusual for there to be three parked outside the BSE at midday of February 1st 2349, but Miss Conroy did not pay it much heed as she made her way back across Cavang Street from The Neapolitan - the restaurant that was the place to be seen and notoriously hard to be put on their admittance list.
By the time her mind had registered the immense flash of light that emitted from the armoured truck she had just walked around that blocked her normal straight-line to the BSE entrance it was already too late. She was dead. The truck erupted into a fireball and an expanding wall of fine metal shards - followed milliseconds later by the other two trucks, in a huge explosion that tore off the front of the Bastion Stock Exchange, killing hundreds, wounding thousands and effectively ending the institution right there and then.

Despite all signs pointing it being one of the more extremist Lower factions - It was Cross who had destroyed the heart of the Bastion's financial institutes.

Passing Pluto

"I always thought one day I may be leading an armada into the Solar System, but never like this" Admiral Ramon chuckled, walking around the bridge of the Broadsword and observing the activity of each of his crew.

"The storm surrounding the Sol star is nothing like any we've seen inside CSPG space, comrade-admiral" The Broadsword's XO remarked, glancing to his monitors showing the huge storm engulfing the system before them.

"It is rather intense, is it not?"

"Perhaps then the theory that it is tied to hyperplane-usage is correct?"

"Would make sense, considering the traffic this system sees." Ramon got to his flight officer and looked over his termainl's readings. "Comms, instruct the fleet to flip their ships and begin the slowest deacceleration burn we can. Just flying up to El Bastión. and slowing like normal won't work in this miasma, we're going to have to glide this in real slow"

The Bastion
Tehran

SoKo mercenaries had been a staple security fixture for the many huge mansions that covered Tehran, they had no particular allegiance one way or the other to Lower or Upper, they just did what they got paid to do. After the last year of chaos however, and with scant news reaching them of the declaration of Third Moscow most of them just wanted to get off the Bastion and start their new life in their new homeland. They had refused to submit to the Imperialists, and so they had been deemed enemies of the new order.

Where as previously the conflict between pro-Imperialist and pro-Socialist forces had been somewhat 'low-intensify' in nature, an asymmetrical war between the far more numerous though less equipped and trained Lowers and the military-grade forces of the Uppers - the war for Tehran could truly be called that - A war. The Soyuz Konglomerative mercenaries were no push-overs, and the UN-military garrisons in Paris moved downward to assist them with their heavy armaments. And so the once idyllic estates and mansions of Tehran became a warzone.

While one is never really at risk of being shot by small arms fire from the opposite side of the Bastion due to the fact that aiming is next to impossible to account for given the whole habitat is constantly rotating and any shot will never land where you aim - also combined with the fact that at the very center of the 8-km radius space that runs down the habitat the gravity is so weak that any small arms projectile that passed through it will be slowed down so much that should a bullet actually hit you from the other side - it'd be no more harmful than if the shooter simply threw the bullet at you with their bare hand.
Standard-Dynamics and the United Nations did not have just small arms however. They had artillery pieces and rocket platforms, for weeks on end they shelled each other from across opposite sides of Tehran, reducing billion-dollar mansions and palaces to rubble. Tanks and armored vehicles rolled across the once well-maintained lawns, and the huge lavish gardens filled with all manner of flora saved from Earth each became their own miniature jungle or forest-like battleground.

Lance of Irassia
Entering the Sol System

"Commander White" LOIS chirped into life minutes after entering Sol. "There is a large number of ships approaching The Bastion"

"Yeah, that's the UNMC right in front of us, LOIS"

"No, not them, Commander!" The AI shot back slightly aggravated for just a split second before returning to her default good mood "There are seven military vessels approaching from the opposite side of the system. They bear the comm signatures of la Conferencia de Sindicatos de Patria Grande" LOIS remarked in perfect Spanish, though any Language she chose to speak would come out sounding fluent.

"What the gently caress? PeeGees? Here?!"

"Commodore!" The Lance of Irassia's sensors technician looked up from his terminal to Jillian "they're about half way between the orbital paths of Mars and Earth, they'll be at the Bastion in two days."

"They must be using the storm as cover to invade. LOIS, target the largest ship and prepare to fire!"

"So that's it huh? Earth. I've seen the pictures, but, seeing it like this.... it is such a sorry sight." Ramon shook his head and frowed, imagining what the homeworld of his people must have looked like in a centuries past, what it must have been like in its final days. "The bastardos who did this are aboard that habitat, and it's about time we held them to account for their crimes. For centuries of wickedness. Bastion must be freed."

"Comrade-admiral. Something coming through the storm, a uh, a signal I think? I'm not sure, I've not seen one like this before, we're being hailed but the signature is not like any I've seen - it simply reads LOIS"

"Put it through"

"Hola! Am I speaking to the capitán of the PGV Broadsword?" suddenly burst through the Broadsword's comms receiver

"Yes, who is this?"

"My name is the Lance of Irassia Singularity, but everyone just calls me LOIS! I am on the other side of the system, but my eyes are muy buena! Hehe. I couldn't help but notice your vessel has flota humanitaria on the side so I fear there may be some big mix up at hand. If your intentions are not malicious then can you please contact my commander - I am afraid that I have been constructed in such a way that it is physically impossible for me to disobey orders, so if she asks again I have no choice but to dematerialize you. You can't see us through the storm, but we are at these exact coordinates, you'll have to really amp up your comms to get through to us though. Please hurry.. uh, comrades!"

Lance of Irassia

"Oh!" LOIS retorted, seemingly out of nowhere to the bridge crew of the Lance "That's smart of them. I figured they'd have tried to talk to you directly, but this works too, yeah!" Commodore White furrowed her brow and held out her hands in a mix of confusion and annoyance

"LOIS! what the hell are you talking about, target their largest ship and f-"

"Mayday mayday mayday!" Suddenly played all around the Lance's bridge "The Bastion is under attack!

"LOIS... what was that?"

"That, is a distress call that originated from the Bastion. Which the PGV-Broadsword and her fleet had been following."

"Is it-"

"Yes, it is authentic. It originated from Deuxième-Versailles , Oh! I'm getting to speak all sorts of human languages today huh?"

____________________________
Bastion
Deuxième-Versailles

"It's been a while since I've been in this room" Cross slowly walked around the edge of the UNHQ's war room, inspecting all the terminals and panels which had seen a significant update since he was last here "-When I won us the First Frontier war."
Olivia Gardner was stood in the corner of the hi-tech command room, an Imperialist soldier at her side, others were about the room manning various terminals.
"And from which I will win us the second - in time."

"What are you even trying to achieve anymore Cross? Each day you lose more and more ground to the Lower's revolution, and now a fleet is here to see the downfall of your little insurrection."

"Hm, yes I can see that" Cross glanced at the intricate holographic map in the center of the room, currently zoomed all the way in on the Bastion, showing the various ships all gathered around it. " 'USS...humanitarian fleet', quaint, not quite the UNN you were hoping for is it?"

"The UNN would have detained you, the CSPG will just kill you on sight."

"And you, too? Chief-executive-office of StellarX, Olivia Gardner. Assuming that is, that the Lowers don't reach us like you believe, I'm sure they too would string us up both just the same"

"I've done everything in my power as just the emergency-coordinator to help them however I can, despite your hindrances along the way."

"Yes, you are just an emergency-coordinator aren't you, Bastion is missing it's Secretary-General" Cross stopped before one of the terminals, reserved for use by the UNSG, it was awaiting a password prompt, which he put in and upon it being successful he simply tutted and shook his head "My, forty years and they didn't change that?" He tapped at a few buttons and there slowly came the sound of some immense mechanical groan deep in the Bastion itself that reverberated along it's entire 120km long frame, even from inside the war room deep inside the center of Deuxième-Versailles they could hear the wailing of sirens, whose unnerving tone Gardner (nor anyone on the Bastion for that matter) had heard before. The great gates of the Jakarta Docks began to slowly come together, gargantuan rusted steel gears the size of small trading sloops rolled the tow huge slabs of super-alloy until they clamped shut. Elsewhere along the outside of the Bastion, every entrance, gateway, or chute for haulers or cargo ships to pick up / deposit goods and resources all shut themselves up, sealing the entire habitat.

"Bastion has never had a lockdown before - it has never need to, we have never faced the risk of invasion. Ironic that it would be the emergency-coordinator that brings the first threat to our doors."

Lance of Irassia and USS Humanitarian Fleet

Approaching the bridge of the La Espada-Ancha Commodore White, her XO, LOIS in holographic form, General Moss of the United Nations Marine Corps and a handful of their support crew were marching at a quick pace, before them was Admiral Ramon and his crew. The first time UN and PeeGee had met face to face in just over a century.

"We are going to have a little talk about this once we're back on the Lance" Commodore hissed at LOIS in a hushed tone with her head bowed, still both equally angry and confused at whatever was going.

"If they were hostile, they would have opened fire." LOIS tried to reason

"If they were hostile, they'd be dead, because the Lance would have vaporized them" White said through gritted teeth before throwing her head up again to look at the Patria Grande crew as they entered the bridge proper and she practically exploded into a shout "What kind of 'humanitarian' fleet has an escort carrier and destroyers?!"

Admiral Ramon leaned back slightly as if the UN commodore's verbal assault had physically pushed him back. He knew Jillian White was brash but still, it was a little unexpected. He composed himself and folded his arms, looking down at the redheaded woman half his height.

"One that must operate in areas where people are in need and their cruel leaders will not heed their pleas." Ramon said proudly and looked around to his crew "Every member of the Flota Humanitaria is a doctor, an engineer, teacher, experts in logistics and infrastructure but first and foremost - they are all revolutionary warriors, and wherever freedom is needed most, they will march"

"And you're going to bring 'the revolution' to Bastion?" White could not have sounded more condescending as she used giant exaggerated air quotes.

"Commodore White, El Bastión's revolution is already upon you, we are just here to make sure it isn't murdered in the crib by Patrick Cross"

Across the breadth of the UN-NAF border, warning sensors go off, from the systems not affected by the storm their long-range scopes can see incoming NAF-fleets, larger and more organized than ever before.

In the Botein, The Fleet of House Delgado had reformed and surged across the border at once, now under command of Prince-Admiral Patricio - brother of the late Princess-Admiral Catalina.

Meanwhile, moving up to the border from New Colorado is the Washington Fleet, stronger than ever, with the greatly expanded Colorado fleet entow.

Bridge of the Broadsword

For the better part of thirteen hours White and Ramon had been arguing, debating, shouting at one another, their throats sore and their resolve wavering. The rest of the crews - both UN and CSPG - had taken to just conversing amongst themselves and even with each other, sharing tales of their deeds against New American or New Indian and the shared qualms of military life. Eventually Ramon had managed to whittle White down, countless questions and propositions about the UN's entire model and ethos that she had no sensible answer for. And the years of propaganda instilled in her when finally said a loud to the CSPG commander only sounded hollow, contradictory or outright cruel.

Commodore White was slumped over one of the terminals of the Broadsword's bridge, a scowl on her face, the anarchist was right, but that didn't mean she had to like it. The acknowledgement of a lifetime of service to an inhuman system wasn't helping her mind or conscience much either.

"Then how do we get in there then?" Admiral Ramon sighed, tapping his foot against the metal floor of the bridge as he glanced over the monitors showing the Bastion beneath them "The whole habitat's locked up tight" some of their crews were now glancing over and paying attention again, now that the ideological tug-of-war was over.

"Those doors are two hundred metres thick. You could fire a nuke at them and it'd barely leave a scratch." General Moss piped up. "They've never been used before, but we - UNMC, UNN commands and the UNSG- had always trained in how to operate them in the event of an invasion."

"And the lower entrances? Where the haulers off-load"

"Not as secure, but getting closer to the Bastion either way will likely but in range of the Bastion's defences. The only reason I suspect they never fired on you is they can't get a lock in the storm" Ramon nodded with an irked expression and glanced at Commodore White who still seemed to be fuming.

"And what about -her-" Ramon asked, referring to LOIS, who had been in a corner with a group of PeeGee technicians conversing entirely in Spanish and regaling the enthralled AI with old folktales from Old-Latin-America.

"Use the Lance you mean? Blow a hole in the doors? No, no, I think even on it's lowest intensity it would dematerialise most of Paris" White grumbled, her head still reeling a little. She narrowed her gaze, deep in thought as she looked to the giant holographic Irassian and then back to the monitors in front of her, one showing the Lance as an idea began to from "Admiral Ramon, they may be something we can do. Something only LOIS can do. How do you feel about doing something incredibly stupid and bold"

"That seems to be your speciality Commodore"

The Bastion

"We will annex - or unite with the New American Federation. There is frankly little difference anymore. And with our combined forces will we finally have the manpower and resources to bring war to the Union of Socialist Systems. Blair's little Galactic Community has unwittingly set the framework for our empire, not one formed of a bunch of runaways from Earth or some loose collections of disparate ideologies gathered in their little clusters - but a galactic empire. The Orion arm and Perseus arm together will have a military that the rest of the galaxy united couldn't hope to oppose. And through The Community we have a link to them all, they will submit, or each of them be destroyed and subsumed in kind"

"And how are you going to achieve any of that when you're stuck here, Cross?" Gardner let Cross finish his ramble before speaking up.

"The Bastion has many secrets, Olivia. Many procedures and protocols built into her from it's very inception taking in to account so many things that could happen to it." Cross made his way back to the UNSG's personal terminal "Did you know, that in the event of a catastrophic failure in one of the sections, it's possible for this habitat to seperate"

"Now, I don't know about you but I would consider ten billion people trying to rip apart the habitat from the inside quite catastrophic. And while it could have been contained or swayed, someone went and brought the anarchists to our gates. I would have prefered the Bastion to endure, it would have made a fine palace, but if this must be the fate of the old sanctuary after Earth, then so be it. But don't worry our cause has allies all across the UN, and even beyond.

- - - -
amongst the hum and buzz of the terminals and computer systems inside the war room, Cross -nor anyone else yet- hadn noticed a new sound in the mix, slowly rising, an almost choral-like tone slowly seeping into this reality from another.
- - - -

On the terminal he had up the system that would allow him to detach each section of the Bastion "Paris-on-Bastion will seperate, and the engines that keep the habitat spinning will give us one last push that will send us into an orbit around say - Venus or Mars. But don't worry, with the Jakarta gates closed we've already sealed the main way in - another will close behind us before we separate and we'll have enough oxygen for a few months. Though with a push of one or two buttons I could make it so the top-half of Tehran won't seal... voiding the entirety of the Bastion instantly."

- - - -
By now the new sound was louder than the machines in the room, from where it originated was a mystery, Gardner and even Cross' men were gazing around the room in confusion, and quickly building panic
- - - -

"No one needs to know what happened here. And we can tell whatever truth we deem most conveni-"

Cross was cut off as the rising pitch of the ethereal choir became a scream that pierced the very fabric of the Bastion

At the heart of the Bastion, in the middle of the eight kilometre space between the opposite sides of the habitat interior there came a great light of a brilliant blue that seemed to mesmerize and captivate all who could see it, it shone brighter than the artificial light given off by the Abuja-core (which was the Bastion's main light source when the sun was obscured). A billion pairs of eyes gazed up as reality itself began to unfold before them, the blue light swelled and formed a cross accompanied by the most eldritch howl. There was a flash and a discharge of immense energy as the ten kilometre long ancient warship suddenly burst through the hole in reality, appearing right down the middle of the Bastion. Docked beside the huge vessel was a smaller green space carrier of a design none were familiar with, being hauled through the rift until it was safely through at which point it detached.

Dropship 112
Mixed UN-Marine Corps / Revolutionary Brigade force

The Broadsword shot forward down the middle of the Bastion, it's huge thrusters blowing out near enough every window from Paris to Hanoi at once. From it's flightdeck, thousands of Patria Grande fighter craft launched and began engaging Congo-Standard Dynamics forces across the Upper Sections, who were quickly overwhelmed and in disarray from the sudden arrival. Once the PeeGee escort carrier was over upper-Paris, near the UNHQ and the interior-side entrance to the Jakarta Docks, the many UNMC dropships that had been transferred aboard prepared to launch.

Corporal Marion clutched his rifle as the dropship shuttered and detached from The Broadsword, beginning the descent to impact on the streets of Paris beneath.

"I never thought I'd be invading my own home!" He bellowed over the rattling of the rudimentary ship and the roar of the reverse-thrusters beneath them as it slowed them. A CSPG soldier was strapped into the chair opposite his.

"I never thought I'd be fighting beside a UN marine" The PeeGee shouted back and smirked.

"Good luck comrade!" The corporal had just enough time to utter as the dropship slammed into the ground and the front hatch fell away as UNMC-CSPG soldiers stormed out to engage the Imperialists occupying Paris.

____________________________

The battle of Paris lasted a week, reducing much of the once-perfect recreation of the Old-Earth city to a shell of it's former self. Whole streets of buildings now just rubble as the Imperialist and Socialist forces fought. Given the CSPG had air superiority there was only so much Cross' forces could do (Cross himself, fleeing from the UNHQ the moment the Lance appeared). General Moss led the fight for Paris, while a large Humanitan-Fleet contingent moved south, connecting up with SoKo mercenary remnants still holding out in what little remained of Tehran, and with any of the old UN-garrisons still alive and they pushed down into the stricken fields of Ankara and dense dilapidated streets of Addis Ababa.
In the absence of any official authority, Lowers had formed their own new local governments to oversee their regions of the cities they held fiercely against Congo-StanDy forces that surrounded and harassed them for the past five years. They were at first bewildered and then overjoyed, to see PeeGee fighter craft flying overhead all of a sudden, bombing entrenched Imperialist strongholds and frontlines that had stood for years, as convoys of CSPG armoured vehicles filled the main streets.

After liberating the UNHQ, Cross was nowhere to be found, but the Imperialist forces in the Upper sections were completely shattered by now. At some point the great gate of the Jakarta Docks reopened once again - presumably Cross' doing, and a great number of ships that were stationed in the docks all departed at once, carrying with them an assortment of Uppers fleeing the habitat.
General Moss took the UNMC and relocated further down the Bastion to aid the CSPG's 'Revolutionary Brigade', as Mexico-City and Manila were the last and most dug in of the Congo-StanDy forces. Moss could constantly be seen at the side of the Humanitarian Fleet's ground commander, making speeches decrying the old regime and all that the Uppers had done.

General Moss - already a war hero for the invasion of New Houston and Salt Lake City and the liberation of Inuvik was now somewhat of a hero to the people, as he led the UN Marines to repeated victories in the industrial heart of Mexico City. The CSPG had already began repairing the damage done to the Ankara Agri-Ring and got food production back up, but while that was underway they distrubed food and aid from The Broadsword, the PeeGee carrier hovering back and forth down the length of the Bastion - The Lance had slowly been trying to edge itself further out toward the now open Jakarta Docks, but considering its size -and the fact that if it hit one side of the interior it'd possibly cost millions of lives- LOIS wasn't taking any chances.

After three weeks, the fighting finally died down, all across the Bastion. The last remnants of the Imperialists were captured or killed. The Upper sections of the Bastion were utterly devastated - most of its inhabitants gone.

The corporations on the Bastion were now powerless, the most destructive and oppressive of the last hundred years already being dismantled, and those that were still of use found themselves under new leadership - a joint leadership of all it's employees and workers. Lowers now ruled. The Bastion was free.

Emergency-Coordinator Olivia Gardner dissolved the StellarX corporation, effectively ending the last official security council member and ending a centuries long institution that had led the UN and kept billions down. She was allowed to retain her position as the provisional leader of the Bastion -to keep the major functions of the habitat itself in working order- as the new regional leaders of each of the habitat's sections and districts convened, along with the now many unions and worker's councils, to figure out just what should happen next.

Vance Blair had taken The Bastion from a cruel inhuman form of capitalism to one that was moderately more acceptable, but now, with the corporations falling and the Lowers in control, any form of capitalism at all seemed null and void. As well as even the concept of an ‘Upper’ and ‘Lower’, as reconstruction begins across the habitat, there's now absolute free movement, and plans for new vast communal residences begins across what was once Hanoi / Tehran / Paris, granting the opportunity to ease the burden of the cramped lower sections as they can now live in areas once reserved for the rich and powerful

In honour of the last UNSG and his desire to see democracy come to the people, a wish that had triggered this entire struggle of the past five years, It was paramount to the leaders of the revolution that they did not allow authoritarianism to slip back though the cracks, the Bastion must become a truly democratic society - all positions of the new government should be never be beyond reach of any citizen of the Bastion (or beyond), and all policy making and decisions derived from consensus of all the unions and councils and all their members therein. A transparent republic held to rigid checks and balances and held more accountable than any that had existed in the UN in the past three centuries.

The Soviet Republic of the Bastion is born.
But as for the rest of the United Nations, or whatever is to become of it, well that remains to be seen.
There are 10 billion people living aboard the Bastion, but another 47 billion out across the rest of UN space, just what will happen and how the planets will feel about this development is an unknown.
The revolution may just be getting started.
And the UN is still at war with the New American Federation, with the fascists making their third push across the border.
And somewhere, out there in UN space, still operating from the shadows, Cross is unaccounted for.

A goon space LP once again institutes space communism/socialism.

Where's that post I made a few weeks ago?

Must be some scientific proof that shows every goon Space LP will converge to the same point with minimal variance after a given time frame.

Bill Adama jumped his battlestar into a planet's high atmosphere, launched his fighters while it was falling and jumped back out a couple seconds before it hit the ground

But Jillian White jumped the Lance into an O'Neil cylinder barely big enough to hold it, and brought a carrier along for the ride to do the same thing

I have no idea who's crazier

(Also, you had McCreary call himself a commodore like White, but he was promoted to Admiral an update or two ago. "Commodore" is reserved for people commanding multiple ships, but who are below the rank of admiral. Sorry, I guess I could have explained a little more thoroughly!

If you're still having him be an admiral, Jon certainly outranks Jillian, but I get the feeling that either the chain of command they are in precludes her from having to follow his orders, or she's just Jillian Goddamn White and she's not taking orders from some goddamn toktube personality, courts-martial or not.)
