The sound of wheels on pavement permeates the air, broken up only by sharp scraping noises as someone attempts to grind across one of the steel I-beams sitting in the center of Uhuru Skatepark.

Despite having been the site of a battle a few days ago, life has returned mostly to normal, save for a few burn marks on the sidewalk from errant molotovs and the pair of anti-gentrification murals in progress next to your meet location: Redmond Coffee Company, a modest food truck painted in pastel earthen colors and parked just a dozen meters from the halfpipe. While the ovens might be cold, the pleasant smell of butter and coffee continues to waft from the open window.

A tall blackboard with expertly drawn art shows the menu, and features a small Halal symbol towards the bottom (with the warning EXCEPT FOR THE HAM AND CHEESE CROISSANT in parenthesis). Despite one or two notable dents from bullet impacts (not holes, suspiciously enough), it looks to be in perfect condition.

There is no tiramisu on the menu, however.

A woman with short hair and obvious orange cyberarms leans out the window, idly watching the skaters with a relaxed smile, her synthetic, clawed tail waving gently behind her. She greets you with a wave and stands up, her cyberlegs extending slightly so that she can better see over the counter.

“Hey, how are you? Know what you want?”

Somewhere in the back of the food truck, a soft song plays over the speakers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntthrYgpOKY

Military Background:
Are those augs from the Omnidyne Systems Apex line? They’re clearly modified, but those are the highest of high end mil-spec limbs and definitely aren’t the kind of gear that should be out on the streets, let alone affordable by someone working a food truck.

Hacker:
Your suite is picking up the faintest whiffs of synthetic aperture LPI targeting radar pings coming from the woman; it’s displaying some rather scary looking alarms thanks to it being under the assumption that someone must be shooting at you with a guided missile or something right now. You get the impression that this is not your average food truck worker.

Elodie (fancy banner/other odds and ends coming shortly)

she couldn't tell you the make and model, but....it sticks out. she remembers orange talons choking out one of her squadmates like a murderhorny Dr. Octopus while the dweeb decked out in regency-larper regalia to whom it was attached threw out a few jokes about Doing The Dew in a performatively sardonic and only part-there voice like she's halfway down an mst3k-hole. she remembers shooting it over and over again and pitifully, uselessly pounding at it with whatever she could find while the other one looked at her like oh, that's cute. that's charming. this is a half-dozen puppy youtubes rolled into one moment. she remembers her ears ringing, her head splitting, drowning in a Literally Illegal concentration of feelings. she remembers--

"Bad Apple Juice?"

please.

"And a tiramisu? or, you know, a cookie." (she says please, this time.)

she remembers she needs to focus, and maybe Oh Right Haha I Forgot To Eat is something to focus on. a wobbly little smile, a jittery little earwiggle. she smooths out her skirts. five things you can touch, five things you can see, five things you can hear. maybe Rose will be one of those things soon...? Idk if everyone else has, you know, arrived yet.

Omar Hassan

Omar looks somewhat nervous after examining the alerts from his Cyberspace Seven deck. He whispers to Marie, "She's got something checking us out with radar pings. I...guess we should be careful?" There's someone already ordering tiramisu though, and he blurts out "Me as well! The tiramisu. That is." He starts wondering if they were actually supposed to order separately. He clears his throat and smiles at the worker and the woman in the outfit ordering.

Traits:

Student Loans: Past you got an education and present you is paying for it. Choose two additional Generic Specialties of your choice (they don’t have to be on an academic subject.) Increase your starting Burden by 1. The first time you spend Cash in a session, you must spend +1 Cash.

Well Traveled: You've been all around Grand Cross and know it like the back of your hand. You have Advantage on all rolls that rely on your knowledge of the station's layout. Frequent traveling means shopping and transport costs; if you roll to lose unspent Cash at the end of a session, roll with Advantage.

Talents:

Laughing Gal: So long as you have your Hacking Suite, electronic sensors (including cameras, androids, etc.) cannot recognize or identify you unless you want them to. Your face is blurred or replaced with a static image (e.g. a cartoon cat's face.) This won't set off alarms, but androids and humans will notice.

Ghost Protocols: You may spend 1 Prep when you begin a hack to gain 1 additional chance on your Ghost and Boost your first Hacking action made within the network. (TOO SPOOPY, modified version of a program from DEATHPIZZA with slightly better UI)

Hacking Suite: A computer, laptop, or cyber-deck packed with script libraries, software, and saved forum threads. You need one of these to run programs effectively. With a Hacking Suite, you can have 1 Program Asset active at once per Hacking Specialty. (Tetsuo Cyberspace Seven, cyberdeck that Omar modified with some better parts)

Memory Worm : You may spend 1-3 Prep to activate this during a hack. Until your Ghost is gone, reduce the Network’s effective Level by 1 per 2 Prep spent, to a maximum of 3 Levels. (Dr. Acid, Omar's own program named after the hacker in hit show Grand Crossing)

ROSE (likewise)

The skatepark is not one of Rose's usual stomping grounds. For one, her mobile activity of choice is more akin to the freerunning 'courses' that enterprising protesters have set up criss-crossing the back alleys and rooftops of Uhuru. For two, it's not clear if she's ever seen a skateboard. Food trucks are also a highly theoretical curiosity, though Elodie does require sustenance and often forgets to manage her intake. Purchases have been made. Never tiramisu, though, and never an item on what appears to be some sort of hidden menu. Truly a first for the android, though many things still are.

Rose arrives shortly after Elodie, soon enough that Elodie's request is still working towards a tiny please, and she sets a hand atop Elodie's head for a calming pat as she finishes. She says, in a much louder voice than her roommate-slash-social-media-manager managed, "Food vendor, I require your strongest tiramisu!"

The exact reason that they have to order an old-world confection of espresso-soaked ladyfingers has escaped her for the moment, but that is irrelevant. This promises a lead towards what transpired in the riots. It must be pursued.

quote:

Name: Rose
Pulsar Handle: @RoseGardenOfficial
Cool Crime Alias: Thorn
Pronouns: She/They

Origin: Android (1 augment does not count for burden, augments are modular during downtime, only active augments count for burden)
Occupation: Street Fighter
Burden: 0 (2 if all augments are equipped)
App (if any): N/A
Personal Goal: Find a solid lead on who is behind the murders.

Cool: +2 (10)
Clever: +0 (7)
Tough: +3 (14)
Quick: +1 (8)

Traits:
Hard Shell (+1 tough defense, disadvantage forward when Tough defense fails)
Hush Money (Decrease starting burden by 1, always 1 cheaper to lower burden, always disadvantaged to maintain stealth/stay hidden/keep out of sight)

Talents:
Martial Arts (No disadvantage from the environment, may make melee attacks against a second target in range, allows multi-grabbing)
Industrial Frame (+1 tough defense, functions in space, automatically save vs effects a spaceworthy android would ignore)

Specialties:
+1 Defense: Tough Defense
+1 Action: Bullshit
+1 Action: Charm
+1 Android Rights Movement
+1 Activism
+1 Personal Trainer
+2 Martial Arts

Assets:
Badass Headband (Rad, +1 Cool Defense)
A thick, red ribbon that Rose took off of a particularly fancily dressed thug that tried to jump her immediately after her awakening and subsequent exit from the secret Tetsuo lab. Allegedly marked with Japanese characters representing 'A Hard Fight,' but a brief consultation of the internet revealed the meaning to actually be 'The McRib Is Back.' Rose simply likes the color.

Gym (The Rose Garden, twice per mission give advantage to a personal prep roll made at the gym)
Small Local Business (The Rose Garden, gain +2 cash at the beginning of a mission unless you suffer economic shock)
Started through a UPAF grant, Rose's found that she has a natural acumen for personal training and teaching self-defense courses. The Rose Garden is a favored meeting spot for android rights activists, as it's as safe and secure as anywhere in Uhuru. After all, who's going to start trouble in Rose's home? Correction: who's going to start trouble in Rose's home more than once?

License (May legally possess two restricted items)
Rose is unaware of any licensing, nor any licensing requirements for the high-spec chassis she was constructed with. The Tetsuo observation team manages all the legalities remotely, mostly to cover their own rear end in the case of legal entanglements.

Membership: UPAF (+1 to Social rolls if they relate to the membership, 1/session call on the group like a community resident)
A known activist and supporter of the UPAF, Rose has been gifted a complimentary subscription to the monthly newsletter and a small pin she's attached to her headband.

Augments:
R: Powered Exoskeleton (advantage on all physical rolls, crits convert advantage to boost, must spend 1 prep to maintain benefits in fights/extended chases/etc)
A highly experimental feature, Rose is equipped with power rerouting subroutines (Codename: Tetsuo Maximum Overdrive), that leverage the sturdiness of her body to the fullest extent possible. It absolutely guzzles power, though, and full battlefield use would require advances in power storage efficiency of roughly an order of magnitude.

R: Heavy Armor Frame (Always reduce incoming damage by 1 box, +1 tough defense)
A design heavily 'inspired' by recent OGREMOCH battlefield models, a mixture of adaptive shielding and self-repairing armor plating offers unparalleled battlefield survivability. Of note, it also ensures that Rose's surface is free of dings and scrapes.

Friendly Design (1/mission, reroll a crit fail on any Social or Stealth roll)
An aftermarket addition by a friend in the UPAF, a pair of AR emitters in her faceplates give the illusion of having giant, expressive anime eyes. While not rated for combat purposes, they are absolutely adorable and distract people from how lethal Rose is built to be.

Evie

It's another slow day at the cafe, so Evie has plenty of time to show up at the rendezvous. Even if she were a skating sort of maid, which she's emphatically not, she'd still stick out here. There's something about her with an intense mom energy; she's not here to shred, or even to watch over the young master, she's here to patch up knees and to be utterly uncool.

It's with that same level of savoir faire that she approaches the food truck. She stands there staring at the backs of a bunch of weirdoes all ordering the same thing that isn't on the menu. In a voice she clearly thinks is cool, Evie raises one finger from the back and says "I'll have what they're having."

The woman pulls up a box of Bad Apple Juice for Elodie, then stops, confused. "Um... We don't have tiramisu on the menu?"

Her legs extend further and she hops a little to lean out the window and get an angle to look at the blackboard, then pulls herself back in, shaking her head. "Yeah, we don't, sorry. We have chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal raisin cookies, though. Would you like one of those?"

The other three asking for tiramisu are met with an even more befuddled look, and she tugs at her collar, looking down and away as she speaks into an earpiece microphone. "Roxie, did you mess with the online menu again? There are a bunch of people asking for tiramisu..."

ROSE

Rose tries a different tact, "Are you aware of forums user 'Sk8P'? They have requested that we rendezvous at this location and make this order."

The growing crowd of fellow tiramisu afficianados are tagged in her equally growing combat analytic databanks. The vendor is clearly the most threatening, though suggested courses of action for the other are duly processed and logged.

She definitely stammers out "I-I just like tiramisu...." in a cool nonchalant tier one opermaider voice and doesn't sound halfway between embarrassedly trying to make a joke to break the tension and 'oh clearly this poor thing has gotten mixed up in a rollicking comedy of bearrors.' Harm X/X - P.Prep X/X - Init. XX

In typical laconic Australia fashion, Penny rocks up halfway through the about half a dozen people crowded around the food truck asking for the same thing that doesn’t get served. As such, she gets to not look like an idiot ordering it. The sheer power of getting lost on the way to the skate park was almost too much to handle.

Wait what the gently caress is up with those augs? They were even more high end then the poo poo in her own chassis. Shiiiit it’s a set up, they’re all going to get loving hosed. ID everybody with a lovely dessert and then smash all their loving skulls in. drat it, god drat it…

Eh, gently caress it. Coffee first.

“Hey, love?” Penny manages to yell from the back of the crowd, the digitised assembly of her voice buzzing a bit at such volume. The android she had seen around before, looked sturdy enough. The others were very fleshy, but. Skilfully, she casually shoves through the crowd enough to be in the way for this assassin the moment the killing starts. Maybe the other idiots would get a couple seconds to run. “You do coffee though, yeah? How about a magic?” Penny asks with close to 0% expectation she’ll get it.

Traits:
Full-Body Prosthetic (Gain Android Origin perks without the Specialties)
Modelled after the face of a famously expensive failure of an ad campaign for Tourism Australia, the government had thousands of these units in surplus and transferred the stockpile to other various government entities for use or disposal. Looks absolutely nothing like Penny did, down to her having to dye her hair red again. If you roll for Personal Prep and the dice show a 1, you will suffer dysphoria or dissociation an old worksite malfunction and make all Social Tough rolls at Disadvantage unless you spend a Prep.

Gregarious Mateship (+1 starting Burden, gain one Personal Prep for every Cash you spend at first Cash spend)
Like with most jobs, it’s the people around you that makes the work a little bearable. And when that work is forced labour on the Moon they’re the only thing even close to worth a drat all the way out there. Even unrepentant arseholes are your close mates, and they’d give you the shirt off their back if you asked for it. Just how it is.

Talents:
For the Cause
When you are fighting for a cause larger than yourself, take +1 Tough Defence.

Industrial Frame
Your body is designed for hazardous industrial environments, including shielding from space radiation. Gain +1 Tough Defence. You automatically succeed on all Saves vs gases, radiation, and similar things that the GM agrees make sense for someone spaceworthy to shrug off.

Specialties:
Military +2
Augment (Stomach) +1
Cool Defence +1
Craft Beer +1
Gun (F90) +1
Mining Engineering +1
Oil and Gas Piping +1

Assets:
Lithgow F90
Obsolete weaponry handed out to every Australian assigned to Shackleton Proprietary sites for ‘dealing with the neighbours’. Somehow still functional despite being more busted than not at this point.

Safehouse (If you manage to get to your hideout undetected, no one can find you unless you want them to. If your hideout is ever found, you lose this benefit, but can spend 2 Cash to set up a new one)
Less a traditional safehouse and more an glorified crawl space that gets decompressed into space every 14 hours. Is it inhospitable and deadly? Yes. Does that bother Penny even when she gets caught in zero atmo? Nope.

Licence (May legally possess two restricted items)
Set up by her friends in Hotel Melbourne because they didn’t want any chance of their mule getting searched before handing over the goods. Has worked out in Penny’s favour long-term because there is about zero chance of her keeping any level of cool if she was seriously stopped and searched due to her chassis.

Trendy Wardrobe (When you change before a Social situation pick a Mood, you have Advantage on all Social rolls while that Mood applies.)
About $3000 worth of Yeezys paired with the finest thrift store fashion.

Augments:
Stomach (Can eat and drink and taste and smell, +1 to all future rolls to analyse tasted substances if not immediately identitifed, no Burden)
Mandated as a legal requirement for all full-body prosthetics designed for the Australian market, as it was thought the lack of ability to drink a cold one with the boys after even a totally successful surgery would lead to the brain suffering catastrophic rejection from the prosthetic body. This precaution has not yet been proven wrong.

Heavy Armour Frame (Always reduce incoming damage by 1 box, +1 tough defence, no Burden, Restricted)
Penny’s skin-like coating may be 70% missing now, but the frame under it is probably tougher than sections of bulkhead on the station. Shackleton Proprietary’s extensive use of nuclear mining required all equipment to be heavily shielded and reinforced, including android and prosthetic bodies. Has 100% kept Penny alive through times she very much wished she was not alive during.

The woman pulls a large oatmeal raisin cookie form the display case, drops it into a paper bag, and hands it down to Elodie along with the juice box. She gives her a comforting, knowing smile. "It's okay, no need to worry. This place is safe. And you can just tap your multipass to the square, there."

Rose's mention of Sk8P, however, causes her smile to immediately vanish, replaced by a thoroughly unamused expression. She speaks sternly into her microphone as she stares at Rose. “Roxie, come here.”

Rose offers a helpless shrug and a pair of gleaming anime eyes in these trying times to the baffled food vendor, though it rapidly becomes apparent that the as-yet silent partner seems to be their actual contact. Continuing to lightly massage Elodie's ears while she acquires sustenance, Rose offers a slight head-tilt of acknowledgment to the incredibly sturdy and equally Australian full-body who's taken up the baton of absolutely baffling their mutual host.

The woman gives Penny a stare, then begins tapping frantically on her tablet, then reads for a few seconds. "... Yes," she responds hesitantly, "I can do a ristretto and no you cannot get one more run in, they're waiting. Sorry." She sighs, turning around to tamp a fresh portafilter for the espresso machine.

A very large, dark-skinned, tailless catgirl in a crop-top looks back mid-grind and immediately dismounts. She kicks her skateboard up into a hand - her deck featuring a black and red checkerboard pattern with the eagle, globe, and anchor plastered across the middle - and runs over at her beckoning, giving you each a nod in greeting before looking to the woman in the window.

“What’s up, Jenna?”

“Who is this?” Jenna motions to the group with a hand.

Roxie scans over the group with a deer-in-the-headlights stare. She shrugs, clearly playing dumb. “I dunno, customers?”

Stepping back from the window now that her coffee was on the way, and that they were probably not getting murdered here, Penny returns a nod to Rose. “Seen you around here, yeah?” She asks a declarative statement. “Guessin’ you’re packing a body at least as illegal as mine if you got tapped for…” She looks back over at the bickering coffee couple. “Whatever the gently caress this is?”

ROSE

Rose gives a slight nod to Penny, though all she really says about the legality (or lack thereof) of her body is, "Well, I know Kung Fu." And about fifty other forms of advanced pugilism, but who's counting, really? "And I have an obvious interest in current events, given the givens, so here I am."

Her head snaps back to focus on Elodie as anxieties fitting the scale of some sort of anti-kaiju mechanized weapon come flooding out of a teeny tiny teddy bear frame. She squeezes the poor girl's shoulder, then adds, "If you don't, she'll cry. Nobody wants that." A beat, eyes narrowing. "Right?"

“Ah yeah.” Penny just nods, understanding the unstated ‘not talking about my totally illegal augs right now kthx’ message from Rose. Instead she jumps track from the depressing as poo poo current events to something more in her wheelhouse.

“Kung Fu, huh? I’m into sweet kicks too.” She deadpans, actuating her hip and lifting her leg to about 110° to show off her Moon Rock Yeezys. Which were orders of magnitude more expensive than the rest of her outfit, with both her red flannelette shirt and torn jeans looking like they had been dragged through tar and washed off in high powered acid.

ROSE

Rose looks back to Penny, considering the institution of Moon Rock Yeezys, and then falls down a lightning-fast computational hole of figuring out how long those would last if she was running at full power. Conclusion: not nearly long enough to be a fashion statement.

She says, "Those are some pretty sweet kicks. Good angle, too." The semi-competitive nature of cutting-edge androids does tempt her into slightly exceeding the leg raise with one of her own, but she realizes that Elodie's position would make that both precarious and patently ridiculous. Instead, Rose adds, "It's hard to find a pair of shoes that can keep up with my needs."

Jenna shakes her head and forces a smile at Elodie and Rose. "Right. One magic, coming up. And you do count as friends."

Roxie smiles and waves back to Marie, then shakes Omar's hand as if nothing were wrong at all here. "Hey, nice to meet you."

“Roxie, why are you hiring a team?”

“I, uh, well, after the other day - “

“Roxie, no.”

“I just wanted to make sure - “

“Roxie.”

“I’m not - “

Roxie.”

“Sorry. I’m worried.” The catgirl’s ears fold against her head and she averts her eyes, frowning. After a few tense seconds, Jenna lets out a weary sigh.

“Fine... If it’s going to help with your anxiety, alright, but you’re not going with them.” She hangs a sign on the counter that says OUT ON BREAK and sets Penny's coffee on the counter. “Why keep it under wraps?”

“I didn’t want you or Bryce to worry about it, is all. I know how y’all feel about stuff like this, but I just gotta know I’m not putting y’all in danger because of something from my past.” Roxie waves you around to the back of the truck. “And besides, it’s just totally legal private investigative work. I’ll just give them the cell phones and the guns - “

“The what?

At least the ristretto came out acceptable.

“Thanks!” Penny lets her leg drop. “I can go a bit higher but I’m already up for a replacement shank and the last thing I need it another botched hip servo, yeah?” She totally understands Rose’s feeling with shoes not keeping up with the rest of the body. “Yeah, nah, I get that.” She points vaguely at her trashed clothes and total lack of artificial skin over her… like, it’s most of her body at this point besides her face and hair and hands and feet. “Almost don’t wanna bother even getting something nice if it’ll just get destroyed.”

Penny smiles a thanks to Jenna and sips her boiling hot and not actually too terrible ristretto. “Oh! Call me Bluey.” She introduces herself to Rose and joined-at-the-hipheadpat-Elodie, settling for just pointing at the others gathered around for the job. “Not my real name. Excuse the opsec an’ all.”

“I thought gun was implied in the memo?” She looks to Roxie and Jenna and back again a couple times. “No?” She suddenly bursts out laughing. “Hahaha! poo poo, better not look in my bag then!”

ROSE

Rose grins. Or, well, a very specific confluence of anime eyes, head tilt, and lighting give that particular impression. She says, "Nice to meet you, Bluey. We're..." There's a brief moment where she almost introduces the two with their normal identities, then she corrects herself, "Thorn and Beara Bellum, I suppose." Then she realizes that Elodie already paid for her stuff with a multipass tap, so names are clearly out there, but... well, that's a later problem.

Looking over to Omar, she says, "Well, depends who and what we're investigating. If the pitch was right, these are the same sort of people who gunned down activists in the street."

"Th--the only guns I need are these, okay?!"

Cue a round of tiny bear-meido flexing. It's not, you know, *intimidating*, but it's just earnest enough to be kind of cute?

....and then she sheepishly unzips her picnic-basket purse to reveal the pastel grip of a sticky shocker, just for a moment. (There's probably a re~ally clever name for it but that can come when I'm feeling cleverer the time is right.) "And this. Maybe? Will we need, um, more?"

"I was not aware of any guns," Jenna says to Bluey, prompting a sheepish grimace from Roxie.

"I, uh... Y'know, took them off the guys so they wouldn't wind up on the street. And for investigation purposes. Also I might have kept a few of my old things from when I, uh, retired. Actually, it's a lot," she admits, her rumbling voice and Texas accent more apparent now that she was more talkative. She waves everyone around to the back of the truck and pulls a small privacy screen around the rear awning. "But it's fine! It's hidden really securely, and it was just in case, and, uh... It worked out, right?"

"I... Suppose," Jenna admits reluctantly, stepping out of the back of the truck to hand Elodie Beara Bellum her magic, along with a smile and a comforting pat on the head.

“Aight, so the tee-ell-dee-arr is that some unidentified guys tried to tear gas us and take shots while we were using this area to stage wounded from the riot. Didn’t go after anyone else, just us - mashallah - so it was definitely targeted. I got some pics on this USB if you wanna look. And before you ask: don't worry, they're alive, I put up the mean weapons when I realized they weren't really equipped to deal with us. Just punched 'em out.”

Roxie produces a thumb drive and hands it off to whoever grabs for it first. On it are a number of full spectrum pictures from a gun cam showing men in angular, militaristic black armor and toting fairly uncoordinated small arms.

She then reaches into a nook in the food truck and yanks at something. There’s a hissing sound as the hermetic sealing system releases, and a hydraulically supported door pops up - taking up almost the entire floor of the truck - to reveal a trove of comically illegal weapons. Amongst the lovingly organized collection is not one, but five short rocket tubes, a pair of grenade launchers, a framed advertisement poster with her and a machine gun, something that looks like a sawn-off anti-aircraft gun, a ballistic shield, a nodachi… Is that a functioning replica of Lavender Lilac's collapsible gun scythe? Is that a Grandpa Death costume?

Out come two large, black, thick bags with heavy duty zippers.

“These are the remnants of the weapons they had," she continues. "Cell phones are in there, too. The bag’s EM shielded ‘cause I dunno if they’ve got a way of tracking them or whatever. Just lemme know who was behind this and if I was targeted because of something I did a long time ago. Mafia related stuff, Ogremoch Engineering, or professional criminal things are what you’re looking for,” she admits, almost ashamed, and paws at one of her ears self-consciously. “If it’s ‘cause I was helping people during the riot or just ‘cause we hang out at the skatepark, I don’t care. If you can get me that, you can have the rockets.”

“And the grenade launchers.”

“O - one grenade launcher...”

Jenna gives her a look. “Fine. But they take the scythe and the skeleton mask.”

Roxie winces. “C’mon, that’s - “

“Why did you bring those up, anyways? Those would be so, so easy to trace back to you.”

“They’re just keepsakes…”

---

There's the job pitch! So you have three big pieces of evidence to start you off:
  1. Five cell phones, locked.
  2. Assorted disabled/broken firearms.
  3. Pictures of the assailants in armor.
If you have any questions for them or want to haggle or whatever, go for it. Social Mood is Friendly if you need that, though the two of them are pretty cooperative since they're asking for help.

Mechanically we're at the part where things are switching to Prep Phase, where you'll be rolling for Personal Prep and Group Prep (pg 50), and you can start trying to Acquire Assets if you can/want to.

ROSE
Harm 000000 - P.Prep 2/2

Rose takes the proffered thumb drive and plugs it into a convenient access port. After a moment of quiet contemplation, she reaches a conclusion: she could beat these guys up. She probably will beat these guys up in the very near future. Passing the thumb drive along to whoever else wants to take a look, she says, "Well, that armor isn't exactly standard issue. It looks a little more high-speed than you'd expect out of the rank and file, but not as high-speed as you'd expect out of a full corporate kill team. The guns don't really match up to the armor, either, so chances are they were using confiscated weapons or evidence locker stuff to hide their tracks."

Looking back to Roxie, she says, "Tell you what. I'll get you your answers, but..." She points a finger at the fully functional collapsible gun-scythe. "I want that when we're done."

--

Later, after the meet...

The funny thing about being an android, particularly one who mostly operates through physical contact, is that there's not a lot of movement during her preparations. Rose looks, to anyone who drops by, like she's gone into sleep mode and is charging extra capacitor banks with a comically large power cable. And, admittedly, that's a lot of it. Just making sure she has the power on hand to go completely ape shitt if the need arises. The secondary factor, of course, is that it gives her plenty of time to sim through various combat scenarios. The challenging aspect isn't taking down a bunch of thugs with small arms. It's unlikely they can punch through her armor in any appreciable timefreme. The real challenge is doing that and protecting any other non-combatants on the field.

There are a number of less-than-successful skirmish attempts where flanking maneuvers, ricocheting bullets, or even one particularly low probability scenario where Elodie accidentally starts a chain reaction of falling construction materials cause unacceptable casualties. Still, by the time power readings are at an acceptable level, Rose has achieved a reasonable expectation of success if her fellow vigilante crimedoers hold up their end of the job.

--

Even later...

Everyone receives a cordial invitation to The Rose Garden for a last-minute discussion and training session. Anyone who chooses to attend is treated to a remarkably enlightening treatise on projected equipment, tactics, and worst-case scenarios given the information gathered so far. There is a very cool space powerpoint. There are also small giftbags, for some reason, though Rose assumes that was more of an unscripted Elodie addition.

There's also a slightly less welcome combat drill that begins when people are enjoying post-presentation refreshments, though it's sure to keep everyone on their toes for the mission to come.

The pawsting business is tough work.

Evie
P: 4 H: 0 C: 1

Evie sticks around after the initial meeting starts to break up, with little comment on the secret food truck arsenal. She buys a couple of things to take back to her own shop, takes some cards and menus, makes sure the pair are buying from the local co-op for their ingredients, all that small food service business with the affability of knowing you're not in competing demographics.

Evie's not sure who you'd talk to about illicit arms deals right now, so she goes to her default method of digging up dirt on somebody: bribery. She starts canvassing the neighborhood around the site of the protest, making sure she brings some nice flowers, real ones, to leave around the memorial. Any of her ancient Builder associates get first dibs on the stuff, and from there she makes her way around town, spreading the love. Eventually, she runs out of lemon bars, but she's picked up some useful info on the way. Tipping well when she stops for lunch doesn't hurt, either.

The rest is simple observation. Changing into a slightly more sombre maid outfit, which doesn't have the name of her business scrolling down the side of the apron in multiple languages, she starts trailing some of the security operations, checking out their deployment strategies, equipment, local surveillance measures, how many of them are around and how many times an hour they take a break. It doesn't get her any closer to finding the killers, but if you're up against the Pinkertons, it's good to know what they're up to.

Evie racks up 3 personal Prep for her roll, spends one Cash for the Gregarious benefits for four total Prep, and contributes two points to the group Prep pool.

"Ghost!" Omar tries to shout over Marie saying his real name out loud. He watches as Bluey takes both bags and says "I'll look into the phones."

--

Over the week, Omar begins taking various trips on the Metro and a few on the Rail. When he's in the less traveled parts of Grand Cross, he takes a phone out of the bag, hooks it up to his Tetsuo Cyberspace Seven, and begins to try and hack past the lock screens. He doesn't spend too much time in one place, and puts the phone back in the bag and moves on if a particular phone is taking too long to hack. He does this slowly but steadily, breaking into each phone and finding out more about the owners.

--

Once he has that information, Omar begins hitting up some nearby clubs shortly before the mission. He finds some great people to hang out with and buy drinks/party favors for before asking them, "You know who this person is?" He shows a picture picture of whoever from the owners seems likely to party. "They left something important at my house a little while ago, trying to return it."

Omar's still a little high when everyone meets up, so he's unprepared for Rose's impromptu combat training and his giftbag drops to the ground. "Hey!"

Marie
Harm 0/6 - Cash 3 (6 - 3)

"Oh," The furrow in her brow betrays the smile. "These things are not licensed at all, are they." Marie makes the mental calculus on how many of these she can smuggle into her apartment before the neighbors would notice. Maybe a grenade launcher in her room and two rocket tubes behind the flat screen. No one would dare look over there, even if they come over to play Smash.

"Well, if everyone's in, I guess I am." She raises her hand. "Can I get a free cookie?"

--

Marie feels she can pull some contacts for leads, but for the most part she decides to focus on work while the others prepare. Sad to say, the war chest/memorabilia of a former mafia mercenyary are not going to pay the bills. She earns a bit more than usual in tips this week, something she wishes she could feel good about except its clear that a lot of people are choosing to stay at home and use their apps more after hearing about the riots. The mood is uncertain at best.

All the more reason to find the people responsible and get them out of her neighborhood. She finds time between jobs to hit up some of her underworld contacts in Hotel Melbourne, who also happen to be regular clients feeding her RoofDash profile with five stars. Through them, Marie secures a few trusted names who she can pick up some fake IDs from. That should help her get into more secure places, if only to be in a better position to extract people. She also talks up some of these gun part remains, asking if they've sold brands of this and that make recently.

---

Marie drives off to make money at RoofDash instead of doing group prep. She gets 13, enough to get +4 Cash (3 from max result, plus 1 from Contractor). Because she has Gig Worker, she also gets +2 Cash from using Headpattr (1 at the start of session, plus 1 from Contactor). So that's 6 Cash in all.

She goes to Acquire Asset for Fake IDs instead of personal prep (I hope this isn't a pattern), which is against a difficulty of 13 because Illegal. She spends 1 Cash to boost her roll and gets 14, so she can buy the asset for 2 Cash. That leaves her with 3 Cash in the end.

Harm 0/0 - P.Prep 3/3 - Init. XX

“A loving gun scythe but no rifle ammo.” Bluey chuckles to herself, shaking her head. The job made sense enough, Roxie was worried she might have inadvertently got people hurt and wanted to know if she was involved in all of it in any way. If Penny had anybody worth a poo poo in her life to worry over, she might farm out a job like that herself.

Handing over one bag with the phones for Omar and taking the other with the guns, Bluey sighs loudly. “Well!” She hefts up on her shoulder what, combined with her own gym bag with gun in, has to be just a disgustingly illegal haul of weapons. “Looks like I’ve gotta go see a sentient being about their pet.” She excuses herself, on her way out making sure to shake hands with her two employers and the rest of the team. “Hooroo.”

-

All illegal weaponry safely stashed back in her safehouse, Penny’s first port of call is her fellow Australian ex-service members. Either retired vets or current mercs working for private security or various gangs, whoever paid better, neither group were ever really paid well enough to not talk at least a little about work while out on the piss. It wasn’t exactly expert intel gathering, but between her military patter and her artificial stomach she was able to keep up drinking with most and listen in when anything useful came up.

-

The guns were a lead, but tracing back a weapon to anything useful was difficult. Cognisant of this, and after checking over the bag seeing they were all disabled or broken in some way, Penny decides gently caress it and starts smashing open a couple of them to see if anything internal was more helpful. Not like her safehouse was clean to begin with, a few smashed up old guns wouldn't hurt the ambiance. A serial number or similar would be great, so it probably wasn't on the cards. But there had to be something.

-

9 on group prep (hitting up other vets / Aussie mercs for intel) for +1 to group prep

15 on personal prep (tearing a couple of the guns apart to see their insides) for +3 personal prep
