Tots were originally cheap to buy, because they were cheap to make, being shaving leftovers and all. But no one was buying them because of percieved value, so Ore-Ida raised the price to fry levels and they started selling better

"Tator tots" is a really dumb name that would be ridiculed if unveiled by a brand today. It's like calling sliders "smolburgs" or "UwU patties." I do the lords work making everyone uncomfortable calling tater tots "spud nuggets," even when ordering from restaurants.
