My brain is incapable of learning information about new fighters because it is burdened with remembering all sorts of Guys from years, even decades, ago. These are some of the Guys that I remember.

Mohan Dragon - Kickboxing

Mohan had a simple dream: Win a K1 WGP and take the purse earnings to open a curry stand. His fighting style consisted of enormous looping hooks that missed, but those were just set-ups to get his momentum going so he could land another huge, looping hook with the opposite hand and crush a face. I hope he realized his dream and his happy now. Or maybe he's still out there, punching faces in highly dramatic fashion. I wouldn't know, I don't watch kicky boxy that much these days.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTZOv5mOwjE

Marius Zaromskis - MMA

Zaromskis is a fun lil kickman who I thought was hotshit for about a year and a half at the end of the 2000s. He then lost to Nick Diaz in StrikeForce, poked Waachim Spiritwolf (another Guy) in the eyeballs what feels like 6 fights in a row and then I dunno, went back to Lithuania?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW71z7iYwnY

Pablo Garza - MMA

The Scarecrow was a top-tier Guy for me for 2 whole entire fights in the UFC. How could he not be a Guy with a win by flying triangle and a win by flying knee (RIP to Fredson Paixao and your legendary parties with Jose Aldo)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEJYo6sH5OQ

Hisae Watanabe - MMA

Full disclosure: I was late to the party for Hisae's original MMA run. She was someone I stumbled across after the fact, I watched the fights of hers I could find, and luckily, I got to see her make a return to the sport many years later. She knocks these tiny ladies extremely dead

Who are some of your Guys?

This is Krzysztof "Ivan" Sosynski. He started out in pro wrestling, which was my introduction to him as he wrestled on shows promoted locally by Don "Cyrus/Jackyl" Callis, who trained him. They basically sold him as a Goldberg type. To his credit, he seemed legit scary in person.

He bailed on wrestling, and got on TUF. He made it to the semis, and did okay in UFC before getting rocked so hard he doesn't remember the fight, and now does movies (he was in Logan, apparently) and promotes MMA shows. Career record 26-12-1, 5-2 in UFC. Not bad. Also the only period I've watched TUF, I wanted him to do well.

I remember K-Sos!

He was or maybe still is the only non-champion that Stephan Bonnar has ever lost to (Cut stoppage)

He was pretty good on that season of TUF.

It's easy to forget that Ryan Jimmo had been in a lot of extremely boring decisions. He did seem like a nice guy though.

I was totally on the Zaromskis train when he was having his run. I always have conflicted feelings about when he kicked Sakuraba's ear off because that was super loving cool but Saku :(

I'll post if I end up remembering a guy. The caffeine hasn't hit my blood yet.

I loving love Saku, I wish he'd succeeded more in the US so more folks knew about him. I don't like Dana White at all but I'm glad UFC inducted Saku and acknowledged his contribution to the sport.

Do you think we should remember Saku? Like, I don't think he was ever forgotten.

I think people who do deep dives into stuff like MMA know full well that Saku is legit as they get. But it'd be cool if more of the people who only really follow UFC knew him. As is, I know about him because of his association with wrestling.

But if someone wants to do a writeup on the guy, I sure as poo poo won't object.

I honestly dont remember details of the fighting career, but I vividly remember the missing pec of Tra Telligman

HEY!

i wanna remember adlan amagov

I saw him on some Strikeforce cards and he murked a few dudes, so I tried to check his back catalogue, which was also good. he's also the only guy i remember with a stoppage from an oblique kick/knee stomp

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGgKjtFZdUA

I'm pretty sure he's responsible for one of my favorite quotes regarding a fighter having nerves before a fight "i lived in a tent city in chechnya for years, where helicopters strafed machine gun fire. in the cage, it's just another man"

he retired, allegedly due to not wanting to cut weight any more. he may have been implicated in some light terrorism post-retirement

What a thread. I'm a big remembering guys enthusiast.

Remember TUF2's Danny Abaddi who served as Matt Hammil's ward and sandwich maker, and he gave that really awkward speech about "Dad I said if I can take your beating I can take anyone's beating" in the precious few seconds of non caretakering screen time.

Remember HIROYA who was a 16 year old kid prodigy undercarding post pride mma stadium events with highschool kickboxing? Where do you go on to in life from there?

Remember the entire existence of Phil Baroni. You've probably been lucky enough to have not for a while.

Remember Sean Sherk eating massive chunks of walleye out of tupperware on camera as a way to sell a PPV fight. What sort of future is there for an early days UFC guy that is too small armed to become a fireman? I hope he's doing ok.

Remember the tales of the original "Zombie" grappler in Japan from around just before the Rumina Sato era who was disillusioned with this training so he'd come to tournaments and open mats and just submit everyone with the "clothespin" submission by expertly pinning his ankles against their neck. He used to compete wearing socks. Someone else out there has to Remember This Guy.

Remember this guy?

I have no idea who this is anymore but his well lit MMA photo has been in my images folder for an eternity.

I was just looking at an old wrestling show card today that had Dan Bobish on it, against Vader in Japan. He also had a match with former UFC & sumo guy Yoji Anjo in the same company. And a 3 way match in 2004 for Dream Stage Entertainment's wrestling company Hustle: Bobish vs Mark Coleman vs Giant Silva. And had another match where he tagged with Pride ref & guys getting murdered because he's terrible at his job afficianado Yuji Shimada.

The idea that he's just a guy with a normal rear end job, helping old people to hear, logically it makes sense but seeing him in that white coat is wild. That is not a man built for normal people work.

My Naruto book club recently reminded me that Baruto Kaito exists.

And now looks like Will Sasso's screen double.

Baruto posted:

Interestingly, one of the toughest challenges Baruto faced was the chonmage — the traditional topknot which, in sumo, all wrestlers wear their hair in.

“When you enter a sumo stable, you have to grow your hair out. But Europeans have very different hair than Japanese people. Softer, thinner. So when I had my hair done in a chonmage, it used to fall down the side of my head in thin strands. And so, because I couldn’t get a good topknot going, I had to use hair extensions. No, really, I used to wear a wig to get my sumo hairstyle. I think other foreign sumo wrestlers had this problem, too.”

HUSTLE was the best drat company, and I wish that Coleman/Randleman had gotten a run somewhere else because they were a goofily fun tag team.

Also I think Bobish one of the guys who was "transformed" into a vaguely monster gimmick after failing the Takada Monster Army too many times.

I missed this at the time but the best part of the Tim Catalfo story isn't even his fighting, it's what came after:

quote:

Catalfo returned to Florida for one more regional win in 2003 before retiring at 4-2--already 44, with his chance at the big leagues gone, it was time to turn in and enjoy a nice, quiet life of teaching and financial success across his multiple business ventures.

Or it would've been for most people. For Tim Catalfo, it was time to gradually torpedo all of them by getting arrested in 2005 for randomly stealing a limo-bus with a bunch of people on it, ramming it into several cars and running away from the scene of the crime, following it up by getting brought up on labor laws violations in 2007 for not paying his construction workers overtime, and pulling it all together by getting slapped for insurance fraud in 2008 after he and his co-partner allegedly torched the kitchen of the Wakey Wakey Eggs and Bakey they owned.
