Solenna posted:It's recommended babies and toddlers who drink milk get whole milk because they need fats for brain development and growth. But if you're an adult trying to lose weight you should probably drink skim. It's all about calories in calories out, drinking fat isn't going to make you fat inherently. To add something meaningful to the discussion, I think that more labels and nutritional information definitely help demystify food choices for kids and adults, while I don't know what the specific thing people are talking about with regards to ground beef. I know it can be stressful to consider what you eat, but it can also let you feel like you're in control when you have more knowledge about your habits.

Sensitive people uncomfortable with their colonial history, eagerly want to erase any trace of colonialism. They'd rather drift through lives having inherited Canada as a blank slate instead. Recently encountered this at a workplace function for TRC day. Lot of people eager to look towards the future, uncomfortable with spending even 20 minutes out of their day in reflection.

Yeah when you lose an election, your vote didn't matter. That's voting science. You only vote for winners.

If you ever bought a lottery ticket and lost, you had a 100 percent chance to lose your money. Your money didn't affect anything. If you are a lottery winner, you had 100 percent chance to win. Buying lottery lottery tickets is pointless, unless you're a winner. In other news, can you believe that Dougie is going to rip up conservation lands to build single family homes!

There should be little meaningful difference to renting out and then renting your own home, right? Is the issue then you feel you aren't charging enough?

666 posting Hey you should all be thankful that we, toronto, are finally taking notice of the smoke. Now there might be political will to do something about it. For real, given the amount of Americans affected I wonder if there will be some liability/funding opportunities with regards to expanding fire season forestry capacity of Canada. Also, hey, Olivia Chow is mayor. Maybe the city will somehow become more affordable and less lovely to live in?

eXXon posted:Google Canada is currently having a huge hissy fit about potentially having to pay fractions of a penny to serve ads on listings of news articles by simply removing all such links from search results (and some other pages). As long as that's going on I'm sure Postmedia and TorStar can also cry that consolidation is the only way to survive and please could you shovel more public funding at us to keep the Overton window open all the way from Andrew Coyne to Rex Murphy? I thought it was about linking to Canadian content for 'free' and that their issue was unlimited liability of the click through taxes. I am not sure if it's an add issue but can con lobbyists were saying linking to cancon on fb or goog was value added and a service they should pay for. Now the world will never see our news tbh

With regards to labelling of any new type of 'product' like compostable bags, there's always a few years where industry hops on and sells products of widely different standards, before consumer protection hits and we come up with a standard and legislate its use. I think California already has one for compostable plastic bags. During my research I found out that some biodegradable bags are labelled as such because they biodegrade on 100^c+ temperatures (or any other condition not found in the natural environment but is some sort of biochemical process).

I bet you all won't even think of one good alternative to having armed men drive around the streets looking for people to victimize. I don't think that retraining them is useful. I tend to believe that removing the financial incentive for police to close ranks from the equation will result in a less politically cohesive body that would be easier to regulate. I think that would mean union busting to a degree but, it would also mean examining the profession of for profit policing and industry around supporting their militarization. Police close ranks because it's the only way to advance and achieve stability in their careers. Maybe that means you funnel cops out of policing to better paying jobs like the military. Police are called on to do work they aren't trained for (mental health crisis response), actually pivot and equip officers to handle that type of work. Create units that only respond to those calls. Disarm the police, or at least have a system where they must 'sign out' lethal weapons from a weapon locker in their vehicle. I think this would make police confrontation much more de-escalation focused. e: any dissent should be investigated by the gov who is supported by the military and treated as corruption etc. Toalpaz fucked around with this message at 18:41 on Jul 30, 2023 |

What's the best way to get Canadian news now? I'd kind of like to just visit one stop shop application (some kind of RSS) or purchase a subscription with the most decent national paper with a Toronto section. Social media is unacceptable to me unless via some aggregator that gives me controls over the advertisements or content it pulls. Do websites need to have an RSS format link/release format or can I PvP websites and scrape content to consume later? The RSS feed might be very important, because you can totally throw the gazette in there and that's cool. RSS is a nice idea and would let me connect blogs, small indie newspapers and the big un's in one place. But it would be good to have options to meet desktop viewing and app viewing needs.

Arivia posted:Sounds like you want a Toronto Star subscription. Maybe I'm more of a national post girl though. quote:One thing I don't understand about the whole Canadian news and social media companies dispute, are people only getting their news by clicking on promoted "news stories" in their feeds? I guess that would suggest that there are a lot of people that only experience the internet through whatever their main social media platform of choice feeds them which would explain a lot. This is absolutely true! Think about the article adverts. Think about Firefox pocket. Algo blog recommendations. People are overwhelmingly just handed things to read and process and in my experience tend to take a back seat in controlling what they decide to read. Some people are probably better at it than me but the way I choose YouTube videos or documentaries to watch, is basically wholly just letting the algo feed me content.
