Our current retirement scheme is a bitch, and was the unintentional result of financial regulation the 80's. It just got embraced wholeheartedly by industry as it let them gut pensions, followed by not raising wages accordingly. That said, being old and trying to live on social security is a nightmare, and compound interest means your retirement savings dollar will never be as powerful in the future as it is today.
