It’s an outside chance but I hope they use some parts of the “classic mode” rules from BF4 as the default for 2042. Bringing those rules in so late in BF4 means they never got a real chance.

I don’t really have any issues with the regular rules but having a bit more structure to the team game without needing to lose 40% of your health in hardcore was nice.

Good to see there's a free battlepass, seems like the premium bullshit is the usual skins and so on. I think this will be the first time any of us pay so much for an MP-only game, but this (based on the little info we have) looks very, very good.

Yeah, locking whole maps and key equipment behind DLC was one of the dumbest things :dice: ever did, and it fractured the hell out of the playerbase at the time. Restricting paid DLC to playing soldier barbie seems fine.

IW's approach to battle passes is pretty good? All the actual content is in the first 1/3 of the battlepass, the rest is entirely cosmetic and finishing the pass gives you enough fake currency to get the next pass for free.

I think at launch it was kinda bland and lifeless, not much content and weird balancing. I'm playing at the moment as it was free with PS+ and it's actually pretty great! But, it took like 2 years to get better so I can only imagine what it was like for the 'early adopters'.

This came up a lot in the old thread, but when most recently asked, here’s some highlights of the issues it had:

Fart Car '97 posted:

It was definitely a "total package" type failure.
-Low content on release and failure to deliver on the 'games as a service' pitch in any meaningful way for a long time.
-Bland, soulless visuals compared to previous titles.
-Atrocious vehicle progression where they were often completely uncompetitive until the final unlocks.
-Lack of iconic locales, Armies, and weapons. They wanted to do lesser known battles but it just didn't work.
-Bizarre cosmetics that satisfied absolutely nobody in either the "horny for ww2 milsim" camp or the "outlandish cosmetics are ok" camp. Also there were none of them. It took them like 4 months to release the cosmetics they featured in the Alpha/Beta
-Grand Operations were very, very clearly unfinished. Not just content lacking but outright half-baked.
-Planes were very unsatisfying to fly.
-Planes were also stupidly overpowered for a long time.
-Tanks were weak which meant all they could do was sit back and snipe, contributing to the usual "infantry on both teams resenting vehicles" scenario.
-Most maps were bad and conquest was the only real mode to play
-Hamada
-At some point they decided they didn't like the ttk, which was generally considered by the player base the only good part of the game, and changed it. Everyone hated the change, which resulted in the game going through like 4 major ttk phases over a few months as they flopped between 1.0-2.0-1.0-3.0.
-The UI was bizzare and sucked rear end

It was clear that design decisions alone would have relegated V to the bottom tier of BF games, but being released a year early just sent it down the dumpster chute even faster.

Hot Diggity! posted:

-Player models being indistinguishable from the background
-Back-prone (although I do find back prone very funny as an image when it's a guy with a loving MG between their legs spraying indiscriminately)
-Lack of quality vehicles, especially transport vehicles
-Insistence on an animation for everything
-The low ammo count that you could hold at launch
-Vehicle resupplying being a thing

fartknocker posted:

- Weapon and vehicle upgrades being tied to the Company Coins that the game wasn’t properly awarding for its first 2-3 months.
- Adding and removing game modes like Frontlines, Outpost, and other stuff, often with those modes only being available for a very limited handful of maps.
- Squad support call ins being underwhelming or downright useless on some maps.
- Map boundaries being awful in some game modes, leading to some resupply/vehicle repair stations being out of bounds for over a year.
- Spotting flares being uselessly small for a long rear end time.

USAS frag rounds + irnv lets go.

See the current version of FuckBite concerns me. The main reason I never got into 1, V or Battlefronts is they just dont feel right to me after so much time in 3/4. I'm remembering correctly right? It is a new iteration of the engine since after BF4? I've been deciding whether to buy based on the beta since 3 so it fuckin sucks I gotta preorder for that, or early access anyway. But I guess I can just cancel as others have said they will.

Bots bad. They were fine playing UT on PS2 when there was literally no other choice. Fine if its just for a practice mode, kill time waiting for a server, but I dont want them in my actual game. There'd better still be HC too, and you guys better play it. Reg date 2008, but played 4-5 years of 3&4 by myself like a dummy. Even if it doesn't live up to them though I guess I can see it being fun playing with a group. Especially with the advent of shadowplay and stuff now, I never got a single clip of anything that happened in 1200 hours or so of 3&4.

Hopefully 2042 will be solid. I missed out on much of BF1 because my computer sucked and couldn't handle it (It actually ran just fine on low settings: it's just at the first map drop patch I went from "Game bitches my computer is out of date but runs" to "Game bitches my machine is such a potato it refuses to even load").

There was a later glitch when Panzerstorm was added where people could move vehicles all over the maps prior to the round start by simply going in reverse, which included going into normally out of bounds areas. Invisible guns and ammo magazines were also a thing for a while with some weapons as well.

Anyway, chalk me up as another very much intrigued by the way 2042 looks. They’re saying a lot of good stuff so far, and I’m really hoping for cross play insanity as well.

Another issue that both BF1 and BFV shared is that :dice: just dumped so many automatic weapons into them that the firefights didn't really have much of a unique period feel to them. In 2042 that presumably won't be a problem, since the setting will finally match the gameplay.

DICE is seemingly incapable of making a new Battlefield without loving with the class system and some of the best Battlefields have had drastically different systems so I'm at least willing to see if it's just "Class + dumb toys" and that'll probably be fine.

From what I recall of BF4 everyone just used carbines all the time on all classes anyway so it's not really that much different. I haven't played it in forever so I might be wrong about this though

If they have a green name over their head, don’t shoot. If they have no name, shoot. If they have a blue name just shoot them anyway because they deserve it.

I think halo is the only game I’ve played where player uniforms are actually visible enough to distinguish friend and foe on the fly, so it won’t be an issue. The one trick that won’t work in this game is listening for someone yelling in the other teams native language to know when an enemy is near by since each team is a conglomerate of different countries, but visually it’ll be no different than any other battlefield.

In addition to what everyone else said, they removed Jihading/made it near ineffectual. Probably the most iconic bit of Battlefield, and they took it out.

I stopped playing Battlefield V when they just randomly removed the ability for the light tank to damage medium and above armor. There was no reason for it, the only time it would cause any problem is if the light tank player used ground strategically to get superior positioning behind an enemy tank, and even then, a decent tanker could still win it.

But DICE decided even that bit of challenging gameplay was too fun and completely removed it without telling anyone.

it also took like 6 panzerfausts up the rear end to kill a tank so you could just park the fucker somewhere completely exposed and lock down half a map and never die
