For the love of gently caress, please be good. I've been playing just a little bit of BF4 for nostalgia's sake a while back, and it's remarkable how much better it felt than either BF1 or BFV. Just give me weird semi-future gadgets to bully snipers with, that's all I want.

The BR genre is also pretty saturated with longer matured games. The regular old shooting has never really been Battlefield's main strength. Sure, it's generally decent and serviceable, but doesn't usually feel as tight and responsive as its competitors. Unless they really step up their game in that regard or find a very unique gimmick, I can't really see it managing to compete with the likes of Apex.

Yeah, the "classless" stuff with free loadout choices give me a little bit of concern. One thing that I found dragged down BFV a bunch was that AT-launchers were part of the most common/versatile class, which in turn meant that vehicles had to play extremely defensively. I hope that there'll be enough of a trade-off to make sure that everybody isn't just rolling with an RPG by default.

Yeah, locking whole maps and key equipment behind DLC was one of the dumbest things ever did, and it fractured the hell out of the playerbase at the time. Restricting paid DLC to playing soldier barbie seems fine.

Perestroika

Another issue that both BF1 and BFV shared is that just dumped so many automatic weapons into them that the firefights didn't really have much of a unique period feel to them. In 2042 that presumably won't be a problem, since the setting will finally match the gameplay.

Looking forwards to some totally unscripted "real-life" gameplay with the players telling each other about the features in a very organic and natural way. "Dang, there's a sniper! The whole on-the-fly weapon modification looks pretty neat, but I'm not sure how much use you'd realistically get out of it for anything except the optics. I mean, what situation could there be where a player would decide "Boy, I sure wish I could throw away my drum mag and exchange it for a smaller stick mag right now".

Yeah, I really hope they'll add in some factor to limit who can carry AT launchers. There really needs to be a distinct trade-off like a weaker/more situational main weapon, or otherwise you run into a BFV situation where you have a fifty rockets flying at your tank the moment you leave spawn. Just going "well you've got a limited gadget slot so you'll have to choose between rockets and ammo packs" is 100% not going to work, because pubbies love explosions and hate throwing packs.

Perestroika

If they're picking up one thing from BFV, I wouldn't mind the squad-level call-ins. They already seem to be going that way with the vehicle drops, so it might make sense to extend that to stuff like fire support. No need for a commander, and you still have the option of calling a cruise missile or something on some dumbass sniper.

In fairness, it's not exactly confirmed that everybody was carrying RPGs. It may as well just have been a placeholder icon, considering that very nearly everyone in the trailer had them.

Fake edit: In fact, I found a bit in the trailer that seems to support the placeholder idea:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gc-VT5hOciI#t=90s

At the timestamp, you're in the point of view of a player with an RPG-icon in his equipment heading into the elevator. Once in the actual elevator, the perspective shifts to the player in the middle of the elevator, looking at the other two. But neither of the two has a rocket launcher on their model, even though in some other scene we've definitely seen characters carry rocket launchers on their back. I may be grasping at straws, tho, since rocket launchers for everyone really would be kinda bad

Like legit, I just want a situation where you see less engineers without actively harming your team. That's the entire end result of the rant. But eh, I'mma just stop ranting about it since it's not like BF4 will get changed anymore anyway.

Yeah, that'd be nice. Ideally every class would have access to at least bother vehicles so they don't feel helpless, yet at the same time that's a very fine line to walk before you end up making vehicles feel overwhelmed. They seem to have tried to go that way in BF4 what with giving C4 to both Support and Recon, as well as the various laser marking tools for Recon. Trouble was that neither of those are much help when there is a tank in your face right now, and the latter only seems to work once in a blue moon anyway.

In BF1 that actually seemed to work a little better. You could put a bit of a dent into tanks even just with regular grenades, tanks being less agile meant you had better odds with detpacks, and all around it felt more possible to evade them. Being able to damage planes with regular old guns also felt nice. In both cases it's rarely something that will actually destroy the vehicle, but it gave the player the feeling that they could do at least something, and it made it less tenable for vehicles to just loiter with impunity until the rocket launchers show up.

Then in BFV they just said "gently caress it" and gave long-ranged powerful AT weapons to the class that is already best at killing infantry

What is the deal with BF4's "recent" server browser tab just... not listing most servers? It happened like three times now that I played on a good server, quit out, went to recent to favourite it, and it just plain wasn't there. The only ones that actually are listed are weird gimmick servers (bolt-actions only, hardcore, five billion tickets, etc.) that I visited by accident and bailed out of immediately.

Yeah, my main issue with Tarkov is that everything outside of the actual game rounds is very weird, dense, and overly cluttered/complex. Sneaking through a forest looking for good loot or stalking a player you spotted earlier is fun and good. Needing ten minutes and a wiki to figure out what loving ammo to buy or where to extract from is not. Throwing an actual budget and a few decent UX-designers at the concept could be pretty great.

Honestly I think it was kind of for the best, too much accurate gunfire at long range killing people too quick sucks big time. Shootouts are more fun when there's tons of bullets flying for an extended period.

Wasn't BF2 also the one with the really aggressive latency compensation that assumed a ping of 100 for every player? So if you had a lower ping, actually leading a moving target could cause you to miss, and you'd instead have to aim behind them?

Yeah, it was generally a trade-off between raw damage and the one-hit-kill radius for attacks from behind. A small knife can one-hit-kill from about 150° behind the enemy, but will only do some 30 damage if you hit from the front. Meanwhile with something chunky like the hatchet you need to stand directly behind the target for a 1hk, but it'll do a solid ~60 damage from the front. That can actually make a difference if you winged a guy with a gun (e.g. hipfire with a bolt-action) and then try to finish them off with a melee attack.

Chivalry 2 also added bots for basically the same purpose, and it works surprisingly well. It's pretty fun to throw yourself into a mob of those and just go wild tearing them apart.
