The different editions of battlefield have all followed the same path:

Base game
Base game + expansions
Base game + expansions + art and music

There are some skins in there somewhere but basically it's always been like that. Buying the Game + the expansions upfront has generally saved $10 vs waiting and buying them when they come out.

In BF3,4,hardline, 1 it was all basically maps and some pre-order skins.

In BFV they switched to selling DLC as characters and giving maps out free. This is good because everyone can always play and you dont have a bunch of basemap only servers. The characters were obtainable thru a money->boins conversion which put them at around $10 each. They were basically skins but they did have custom voice lines, animations, and melee weapons, which justified their price. I was able to get them all for free as giveaways over the 3 years of BFV's lifespan and they did often get sold in pairs at a sale price. You could also buy them by earning the boins by playing which was more difficult at the beginning of the games lifespan than at the end. Now you can get 100 boins each week by playing and a character is 900. The boins can also be used on gun skins or vehicle skins.

I expect BF2042 to be similar but it sounds like they are now putting abilities on the characters. Perhaps it's like R6 siege where only that character has that special ability or perhaps its more like they combine a few common abilities onto them. Either way i'd expect a money->boins system to pay for cosmetics & operators which can also be earned in-game.

If you would normally buy all the DLC because you play loads of battlefield then you might as well get it now. If you would normally only buy DLC if you were still playing a game then you should wait.

By the way, the new EA app (origin's replacement) is also in open beta. It doesn't do anything better as far as I can tell and you can't run both at the same time. It detects your currently installed games so at least the transition is smooth. You can get the 2042 beta there too.

It's only feature is functioning with xbox game pass to let you play EA games using gamepass subscription. Otherwise I would not call it an improvement.

I mean Squad came from Project Reality, a BF2 mod which is still played to this day. But EA won't license out any of the Battlefield engines, Frostbite or Refractor, so they had to use Unreal. But yes, even for all the bugginess, there's just something about DICE's engines that cannot be recreated in other engines.

This brought back some memories. That game ate so many hours of my life.

Some notes about the movement from that video:

1) BFV combat roll is out and not coming back. which sucks. I like that roll.
2) BFV back prone is out and not coming back.
3) Ledge grab is in, but items were made just a bit too high on purpose for map design reasons.
4) BFV Crouch running is out. They might consider it. I have no idea why they would remove this good feature.
5) Leaning is out. They might consider it. I have no idea why they would remove this good feature. Can you peek over cover still or is only leaning around corners removed?
6) 2042 has the ability to vault over moving objects.
7) 2042 has direction control on sliding, so prepare for even more people sliding all over the place.
8) sprint speed is a little different between the games. the speed is:
BF1&V = 6.4 m/s
BF3&4 = 6.5 m/s but with sprint perk 7.15 m/s
BF2042 = 6.5 m/s but tactical sprint is 7.25 m/s

On the list of "Why would they remove that!?"

I think they took a look at all their features and cut the ones that weren't being used under a certain threshold, or ones that required extra work for consoles or something like that. They ripped out whole systems which really didn't need to be ripped out and have been steadily improving game over game. I'm not just talking about big ticket features like building or towables which were just new for BFV. Maybe there was some level design reason for it but it seems like this stuff could have been left in for less work than removing it was.

- Leaning
- Diving
- Position Dependent Melee takedowns (all removed except the one you select in the customization)
- Automatic bipod deployment and snapping (X to use your bipod)
- Medic callouts
- Medic lock on revives from BFV
- Rolling

I'm sure there's more I haven't thought of.

Philman

What do you people think of the specialists?

Wingsuit - flying is fun as hell. Probably the best specialist. More mobility is more fun.

Shield guy- boring so far. I don't get why I would want to put up a shield and then just get shot in the back instead. Maybe with more playtime I'll find a fun Strat.

Turret guy - I want to try a group of 4 turrets in. A squad. I think he's ok. I've had the ranger get kills for me. I'm not sure he's as good as the tf2 engineer. (All videogame turrets are measured against it by law.)

Mackay - pretty good, but trumped by wingsuit. Missing a hockey jersey. :canada:

Irish - I think you can place his shoot down turrets near friendly vehicles so that's pretty useful. I've seen people setup shields on the ground and use an lmg prone thru the gap.

Wookie droneguy - drone with c4, nuff said. Zapping tanks is pretty helpful too

Indian IT guy - hacking infantry is too slow, better to shoot them. Hacking choppers and tanks is a bit slow if but you can do it then its helpful. Emp grenades are more effective aren't they? They should make this affect steering. I'm not entirely sure how his sensor ping works.

Wallhack - this is alot more limited than I thought. I think it's bugged too because it's got a battery charge that doesn't recharge any differently if you use it all or only half. Paired with smoke grenades you can do some damage to confused enemies.

Nurse health gun - kinda boring. Healing was more fun in bfv because you latched on during the revive and health pouches didn't need to be aimed. It somehow felt more like an action sequence.

Ammo crate - cool mechanic for squad camping. You can crush allies with it :yayclod:

So the reason helicopters behave so weird near the ground, causing you to have much harder touchdowns that normal and more difficulty having ascend counter inertia (besides the bs built in auto level) is that gravity isn't a universal value for infantry and vehicles. The bolte is amazing. The long range homing rockets can hit choppers from across the map.

I'm pretty sure the cannon on it has less dispersion than is visually indicated. It seems like I'm hitting long range targets that I visually don't think I should be.

Alot of the critique comes from the franchise expanding the player base with different modes and also attempting to satisfy them all with one game.

-conquest
-tdm
-breakthrough
-rush
-rescue (hardline's counterstrike mode)
-firestorm
-hazard zone?

All have different fanbases who dont always like the other modes.

It's just too many things to focus on.

Breakthrough is alright on some maps. It's good on hourglass where one section is a 3 flag conquest mode which is fairly large. This let's you have a vehicle if you want.

On orbital, and kaleidoscope its very constrained and you may never get a chance at a tank.
