A good sniper isn't taking that many shots tho, they're counter-sniping, tagging as many people on the map as possible, covering their squad and giving their squad a good spawn point.

Yeah thats fair. I do very much enjoy recon and I loved the MAV in 4. Sometimes I'd spend the whole game in our uncap flying my drone and spotting, destroying equipment. Hoping I get the chance to do that again.

I think on most servers you could even come top-10 in points without even firing your weapon, just run around healing/reviving/resupplying people and be a body on points.

I did this the other night with some goons in BF1 on Fort De Vaux. I think I had like 11 kills and I was the top of both scoreboards as support. That was running around and stuff.

On top of this, you saying snipers have no contribution to the team play aspect of the game shows your shallow knowledge of the combined arms aspect of Battlefield.

Yesterday I fired up BF1 and did a total pacifist run on San Quentin's Scar. A couple notes:

- Zero shots fired
- Zero kills
- Zero gadget usage
- 0:18 KD
- Ended up as squad leader (lol) so there are some points for orders followed and what not.

5725 points. In context, we lost, and the point spreads for my team and the enemy team were 13463-2876 and 16145-1552, respectively. I didn't realize that the end scoreboard wouldn't show class at end of the round, but I was out scoring several snipers (and a pilot, lol).

I bled 18 points by dying. Out of 1000. Even if I got killed 100 percent by snipers (not even close), that's 18 points. Who cares. Total flag captures at end of round was 4, but I'm not sure how that's calculated, since I was on several flags helping out that either slowed down an enemy cap or sped up a friendly one. Maybe I was around for 4 completions? IDK. What I do know is that I helped gain more points than any sniper did on either team.

I never revived, never tossed bandages or ammo. I had to work to do the absolute minimum but PTFO and, by hamstringing myself, I wasn't even doing that effectively. The overwhelming majority of snipers I see in this game are at the bottom of the drat scoreboard. Nobody spawns on them because they are never anyplace important. I had squadmates spawning on me constantly, why? Because I was PTFO.

I get rezzed and healed by pubbie medics. I get ammo from pubbie supports. I watch pubbie assaults kill tanks all the time. And yes, every once and a while there are recons that PTFO that are using spotting flares, or are in advantageous spawn locations. These pubbie snipers at the bottom of the scoreboard can TOTALLY play something else and be far more useful. Even an excellent sniper (if they aren't cheating), is doing a fraction of the help to win the game, because in most modes, controlling points is the number one source of tickets.

Sure, play how you want, but you just can't make the case that snipers are useful for anything 95% of the time. They're just dead weight.

Charles 1998 posted:

You treat the scoreboard as the holy word on a player's contribution to the game? I'm starting to see why people think snipers are bad...

It's the only metric available. Points are awarded for actions that benefit the team; more points mean more positive actions, which means a higher probability of winning.

I would love to see a scoreboard where the winning team has far less points than the losing team.

The gun you use should be secondary to the class/role you play. If you're the type of player to go picking your class based on the gun you're probably not paying attention to your kit/role.

This is backed up by all those people that complain that pubbies don't drop ammo or health or revive people. Also snipers that don't use flares or spawn beacons.

This system allows you to pick your gun AND your role.

Yeah but the more snipers a squad has the lower their chance of being able to fight other squads for a chance to extract. This mode is going to necessitate teamwork and sticking together. Someone that wants to snipe from the high ground is just going to slow a squad down.

I think this will be popular with the discord crew. I wouldn't want to play w pubs too much.

I hadn't played operations in well over two years in BF1, played some last night and had a blast defending. Using the 1917 telescopic on verdun I went like 65-5 just mowing people down from across the map. When the map funnels you it kinda forces the pubbies into playing.

However, attacking still saw 1/3 of the team as garbage useless snipers so that sucked (on galacia no less)
