any word on Cross-platform support?

NFS: Heat was the latest Frostbite engine game released and supported it so I am hopeful.

I just have friends on all platforms and we have all played BF since BF3, but never together.

COD MW having cross-platform brought us all together during COVID so it was loving fantastic being locked inside and playing games with my friends on all systems. being able to steamroll a lobby with a crew of 6 or have 4v4 custom games was some of the best fun Ive had in a FPS in fuckin years.

it's purely just following the COD skin monetisation strategy

The Operators and skins are the worst part of CODMW (and I guess Cold War but i dont play cheap rip offs of COD)

without even touching on the gimp-suit skin that makes you mostly invisible (and you can only get it by buying it for $24) facing off against a team of just 6 people comprised of unique skins makes team play a bit of a pain in the rear end, especially when a teammates marker/name shows up and overlaps.

once again, the system used in Halo 3 was fine - custom armor that is the colour of your team.

I went back to BF4 recently and was very annoyed that they nerfed the RC plane bomb gadget with some long-rear end cooldown period.

it was super lovely to unlock it as a non-skylord like me (something like 50 aircraft destroyed using aircraft) and was a real and good counter to skylords.

Really I just want the gadgets + more from BF4.

OK really really i just want BF4 in 4k60 on my xbox.

man it would be nice if youtube just took my search of 'battlefield trailer' and gave me the offical trailer instead of 500 talking head reaction videos or frame by frame analyses by terminally online gamer morons whose opinions i value less than nothing.

is there a plug in or something i can get for my browser to never show me game reviewers or influencers?

sadly youtube also feeds me the ign/other game media channels ahead of the actual official videos also, the recompressed, garbled rear end 30fps ones.

its fuckin annoying that they somehow (read: its ad revenue because MS/EA arent running ads on their channels) take precedent over the official stuff but oh well.

the grind was that bad because they sold Battlefield Premium which gave you better progression and they also sold fast track MTX poo poo that unlocked all items for a specific class or vehicle.

One thing I hate in modern shooters is the whole "shooting an unsilenced weapon makes you show up on the mini map" bit. It was nice not to have it in BF1 but with the return to modern times I bet it will be back to bug me again.

I think MW 2019 has done away with that mechanic. Either way they made silencers basically a no brainer because they give you a damage range extension and silence the weapon at basically no cost. If you play vanilla MW its not a big deal since most of the maps you arent shooting that far anyway.

the guns in MW 2019 sound too good to silence and mag dumping is sick as gently caress.

Playing scout/recon and using optics to mark vehicles and stuff is another chill way to play, especially if you play with people that will actually shoot rockets at the targets you mark.

both of these playstyles are extremely my poo poo.

M60 w/ bipod with an ACOG or 3x, ammo box, C4. use the C4 to hunt big game (tanks) or as triggerable mines while you sit up high and burst fire 7.62mm at snipers who cant shoot for poo poo.

or go Recon class with an SMG/AR, radar beacons and just camp a flag and hide in the shadows. alternatively SOFLAM and C4 and go tank huntin'

Modern warfare i top the leaderboard most games and if I'm not winning I'm not having fun, essentially

I think a lot of that comes down to the map size/player count and style of gameplay (although domination is pretty much conquest with less flags to cap) so it'll be interesting how 2042 does it.

Going back to bf4 and just playing support, throwing ammo and suppressing fire at annoying snipers you maybe can't kill but can piss off enough that they give up is so nice.

Gonna be nice not having jump/shot quick scopes.

COD MW gets it mostly right - weapon attachments/camo for the gun are unlocked via progression (attachments are XP based, camos are kills based, then the pro-tier gold/plat stuff is for spergin' out kills) and then you can get the blue-print guns that are the same weapon with occasionally different models/skins for both the gun and the attachments it has.

it does kind of give some guns a competitive advantage (one gun blueprint gets excellent ironsights vs the default ones) but mostly you have plenty of diversity, you can apply xp boost tokens to quickly unlock new attachments, and the camos you will unlock naturally through gameplay for the most part.

if you want the weird hentai skin that shots sakura petals, cough up $15.

the assignment/challenge was:

Air Superiority Ribbon x1 (win 1 round of Air Superiority game mode)
Jet Fighter Ribbon x3 (kill 5 enemies using a jet in one round)

which, for someone that never played air vehicles at all let alone jets, is kinda tough.

its not like its a big jump in price from gold/ultimate but its definitely an extremely pointless one.

Xbox series X

- in game UI text is microscopic and revive/pick up basically looks the same
- weird, map wide shadow glitching constantly until the storm comes and then you cant see poo poo anyway
- the gunner seat on tanks and heli is basically a laser beam with a needle-eye for a cross hair. there is zero bloom at at all meaning if you arent 150% on target you straight up miss and there is so many particle effects you cant even see that you're missing
- Spotting should just work like it did in BF4 everything since has been awful
- doesnt save attachment loadouts between games
- LMG attachment tree thing wont open after you use it the first time until you respawn
- the recon drone EMP thing doesnt seem to do anything?
- cant give the robodog comments
- swapping Crouch/Melee (alternate button layout) results in the Acog/red dot scope swap button also causing you to crouch/stand up
- gunner seat in land vehicles is unplayable. choppy/stuttering movement of the main turret means your camera constantly jerks around.
- AK24 doesnt remember attachments between respawns
- the UI is awful

Its certainly a battlefield game but its janky as gently caress and even if this build is 6 months old its probably going to be a terrible launch.

e: the UI is 100% the worst thing in the game and it is actively fighting against you having any kind of fun in the game. the attachment changing thing is especially annoying because you rarely have enough time in a firefight to be loving around with it and there is zero explanation on advantages/disadvantages to it. you also cant rush through the menu because if you want to change your scope and press Y/Triangle too fast it cycles your weapon to the pistol instead.

Like I had no idea that AP rounds were only better against vehicles and had been handicapping myself on ammo because they hold less rounds per magazine (which also is not advertised on the loadout menu)

Im not sold on any of the big event stuff from the beta either.

the tornado/storm just makes poo poo harder to see when it gets dark and the rocket taking off affects nothing of importance.

the building collapse in BF4 for example changed the layout of the map significantly and was user triggered. I never really saw it used as a means of turning the tables on a match, but it definitely was good being able to level a building that snipers were using.

this stuff is just dumb spectacle bullshit that everyone will be bored of by the second time it happens. you cant control any of it, it doesnt change the map in a meaningful way, it just serves as a 'wow look at that happening' and thats about it?

I stood in the tornado once and all it did was throw me high up into the air and then the parachute controls were so poo poo I couldnt get out of the path of it and had just wait til I got flung behind it to fall out of the suck zone.

turns out the suck zone was the whole beta.

FWIW the Halo Infinite beta has the same issue of customisation of the player models taking precedent over logical visual representation of teams.

in Halo Infinite you can make your Spartan any colour you like, with different secondary and accent colours (one of the in game colour options I unlocked was cream armour with grey/orange accents)

in game, you are then on either red or blue team. to differentiate the players, enemies get a red a overlay and friendlies get blue.

so you can be playing on the red team, see a guy with blue armour, and hes a friendly with a blue overlay. The team you play on changes from game to game, so you can be a a blue team member and see a blue team member, that is red, with a blue overlay the next round.

Halo also has friendly fire enabled.

previously in 3/4/5/reach you could customise your armour and colours and the base colour would be replaced by the teams base colour for team based games.

The problem isn't necessarily specialists, or customisation (in either 2042 or Halo) but the way they have failed rto manage simple, long solved problems of 'should I shoot that guy or not?' while also being able to charge money for skins.
