The RAM upgrade is likely going to be a disappointing waste of money, but let us know if it does make a big difference for your use case.

All Hail Big Hairy Mike

I managed to snag one of the last 7800X3Ds from Best Buy and finished my upgrade. Thanks for talking me into sticking with AMD, I'm extremely happy with it! The final build as it sits:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor ($419 @ Best Buy)
Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard ($199.99 @ Best Buy)

Case Fan: Antec Storm T3 112.72 CFM 140 mm Fans 3-Pack (Already had)

Idle temp on the CPU is around 40C, gaming hovers around 75C. Everything runs incredibly smooth, no stutters or major frame drops. Helldivers 2 maxed out and at Super Resolution looks *amazing* and still runs >200fps.

Oh there are plenty left, but in the hands of scalpers. Thanks, Intel, you exploding chip buffoons. On the bright side, I may opt for the ryzen 9 7950x3d, since I'll also use it for rendering, and for less than $100 more (at the moment)

Now I need to put thought into a decent mobo that will handle both my old drives and modern ram & SSD

I've occasionally seen the 7950X3D drop below the 7800X3D which makes zero sense, even if you are concerned about the core parking stuff you can just disable the second CCD wholesale and then you just have a 7800X3D that clocks 200MHz higher. It's never worse.

Having been watching the prices like a hawk, it appeared that around the time there was a leak saying the 9800x3d would be next March instead of this fall, 7800x3d stock practically evaporated. When I said I snagged one of the last ones, I mean that while mine was shipping the website changed to "Sold Out".

Intel chips self combusting may have played a role as well. They are around $550 currently, when you can find them. Unless you are lucky enough to live near a micro center and can waltz in in person. I was going to wait for Black friday, but I fear the 7950x3d is next in line to be scalped. If I see it below $500 anywhere, I am scooping one up.

Runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me
Not sure if this even the right place to ask, but here goes.

I was thinking of replacing my speaker set sometime soon; I'm leaning towards stereo with a subwoofer but now I'm wondering if it might be worthwhile to invest in a soundbar since apparently some of them can do decent-ish 5.1, plus it would mean less poo poo on my desk and less wires tangling up underneath.

The only reason I'm even considering 5.1 is because my current setup is already 5.1; it didn't really work out too well, the outer speakers kept crapping out or behaving weirdly and my space isn't really ideal for placing them in the proper configuration. I'm not an audiophile or anything, so long as it sounds good and works reliably then I'd be pretty happy with it, but if a soundbar's just not worth the investment then I'd probably go with 2.1 instead.

So I'm gonna finally go past 16GB of RAM because MFS 2024 is coming and I'm messing with local AI a little.

I saw 32GB 2x16 kits are going for less than what I bought the 16GB for in 2020, so I'll probably just get that. But is it possible to use the 32GB and then still keep the 16GB I already have installed as long as the clock speed is the same and the sticks match in their respective DDR slots?

I’m tempted to assemble an unholy thing from parts bought on AliExpress inexpensive but unusual machine soon, and hate the gamer aesthetic in general. Is it possible in 2024 to find a microATX case that is not pricey, doesn’t have a tempered glass side panel, and has a reasonable level of build quality? Weird colors are fine, but no RGB.

I haven't been posting just hot air for the past week. There has indeed been a run on the 7800X3D in the United States, and it is currently not available for MSRP. The few that are available are being sold by scalpers.

I'm not sure what caused it, but a mix of Intel's woes, the delay of the 9000X3D parts being announced and a battery of games that make excellent use of X3D capabilities dropping this fall have probably made a frothy mix of scalping opportunity.

I used an ancient SnakeLight when I built this new PC, and I found it completely fine for most tasks! It did help a lot with those damned tiny screws for m.2 drives.

Yesno.

There's always a bit of peril in mixing RAM kits, so be ready for weirdness no matter what. The bigger point is that your motherboard will support different max possible RAM speeds with four DIMMs populated vs two; you'll have to consult your motherboard manual about what the maximum supported speed in a given configuration is.

I'm not a sound expert but I've tried 2 "5.1" soundbars for my TV and heard others and none of them work as advertised.

That being said they're not terrible or bad. You're just not getting real deal 5.1 sound effects from them. Of the ones I've used personally 1 sounded no different than a 2.1 set up and the other sounded like it had a little more directionality from the L or R sides but not at all 5.1 either. I don't remember the models but neither was cheap. Upwards of $400 I think.

If you want really good directionality in a small low wire count package I'd look at some good wireless headphones instead.

A rechargeable headlamp is a worthwhile investment for both computer poo poo and general household poo poo

I also use a rechargeable magnetic butt flashlight with a trouble light on the side, the magnet is strong as hell and both light modes are powerful - and I'd recommend the make and model to everyone except I got it as a vendor sample at an old job, there's no markings anywhere on it, and it doesn't look precisely like any other ones I can find online, so, welp

I will say that correction positioning of stereo speakers will greatly aid their sound and directionality.

Get some foam acoustic wedges and angle the speakers such that imaginary lines drawn from the center of the speaker drivers will converge just behind the back of your head at ear level.

Tried the trick with elevating or pointing the speakers already and it didn't work with either soundbar.

I was told by someone who knows more than me that the soundbars are heavily reliant on the shape of the room to achieve their sound effects. I did use their built in room tuning function but that doesn't make them work like a true 5.1 set up either in my experience. Going by what others say about them my experience with them isn't all that unusual.

To reiterate though: I'm not saying they sound bad per se, just that the ones I've tried or seen elsewhere advertised as 5.1 don't tend to perform like a proper 5.1 sound system.

Oh yeah, I’m just talking about stereo speakers. Soundbars don’t fire straight ahead but at odd angles. They can be awkward to get to sound their best. I don’t like them, personally.

Yeah, a 5700X3D or 5800X3D would be a meaningful game performance upgrade (though if you do non-game stuff, it'd actually be a bit slower, especially the 5700X3D).

Definitely up to you, you've otherwise got a slightly older but still extremely relevant compy386 over there. TLDR yes you've got the right RAM kit picked out.

EDIT:

You're definitely on the right track. Not the exact RAM kit I would've picked, but a bit late for swaps now :v: and it'll hardly be the end of the world.

As for the parts on tap, I'd personally pay an extra 30 quid or so for the WD Black as opposed to the WD Blue for higher transfer speeds, but that one's on you and the Blue is a perfectly cromulent drive. The Lian Li A3 is excellent, the Thermalrights are what they are (excellent heat dissipation, absolutely zero frills) and I've been stumping the Pro RS for a hot minute now. To me, at least, you're all set.

Thank you for your feedback!

If your issue with the RAM is that it's CL36, you'd be right to call me an idiot... because I did not buy CL36 RAM, I got the CL30 version. Turns out I forgot I put it in as a placeholder because the UK PCPP doesn't list CL30 as available. I promise I got the CL30 - PVVR532G600C30K. I'd originally planned Corsair Vengeance but the price jumped and I was getting mixed feedback on whether it supported EXPO, whereas the Viper certainly does. And it came out to be £76.50 after the 10% VAT refund, so hard to say no at that price.

Fair shout on the WD Black. I had considered a more performant drive but my understanding is in real world it wasn't yielding heaps of improvement. I'll have a think about it today before I press the button this afternoon. I mean, since I saved the £30 already it's basically a free upgrade, right?

Lastly, thanks for linking to the video review. I can't believe I didn't think to check in with Patron Saint Steve to see if he'd reviewed the case. That's the main unknown to me, but pretty much any case in TYOOL 2024 will feel like luxury since my last build reused a case that's now pushing 20 years old at this point.

e: actually, is there any other small poo poo that I need to grab that isn't included with the above items? Thermal paste, for example? I'm used to just having a bunch of poo poo laying around and it occurs to me that I don't here. It'd suck having to wait another 2 days or something with all the parts taunting me.

Usually you don't need anything if you buy new stuff, the mainboard and PSU come with all the necessary cables, the case has all the screws, and the CPU cooler comes with paste that's good enough(TM).

In my experience, you only need to grab small items if you're reusing components and got rid of/used extra cables etc. in the past, or if you build a system with a ton of extra drives and peripherals which means you might need more SATA, power, USB cables e.g.

Good luck but that doesn't guarantee anything.

Vendors that use Amazon warehousing/shipping who are selling the same SKU all get put in thge same bin. So the fake ones with the same UPC code go into the bin with the real Amazon sourced ones it's it's simply blind luck which gets picked when you order. This has been and remains the largest part of Amazon's counterfeit problem.

What country are you in? Canada
Do you live near Microcenter? Nope
What are you using the system for? Web and Office? Gaming? Video or photo editing? Professional creative or scientific computing? Shitposting? Gaming and personal office/coding projects nothing serious.
What's your budget? We usually specify for just the computer itself (plus Windows), but if you also need monitor/mouse/whatever, just say so. As low as I can given constraints below
If you're gaming, what is your monitor resolution / refresh rate? Sticking to my old monitors, 2x 1080p 60Hz.

I'm building around an eVGA 2070 I've picked up and wanted to get the threads thoughts on where best bang-for-buck.
I'm trying to decide between the 7600 and 7600X, and also how important the RAM timings would be.

There are kits on Canada Computers but only with the 7600 and higher latency ram, plus the included fan (not really expecting to overclock much), could save me a bit but not if it takes 2 years off the useful life of the machine.
