It's a fascinating part of Internet Lore, because almost everything about internet culture traces back to that site. Here's the thing: Harambe is kinda-sorta a FYAD thing (while the subforum's theoretically called "gently caress You And Die", they always called it "FYAD"), but there's way more going on. See, one thing you may not know is that the term "shitposting" comes from SA, and it originally referred to low-effort posts that didn't obey SA's then-restrictive rules on spelling, grammar, and content. You could get banned for comma-splicing at one point. And re-subbing cost ten bucks a throw. So there were a few subforums that were escape valves that let you shitpost, and FYAD was the first. Since SA was originally a comedy site, FYAD became the place where shitposting became a form of ironic comedy, where you were trying to show off how clever you were by ironically posting like some kind of 12-year-old forum-addicted idiot. The people who were best at this became Weird Twitter, since it lent itself to Twitter's character limit. The rhythm and style of Weird Twitter is basically a direct copy from the FYAD of years ago. But it wasn't the only forum like that. One other one was called "Laissez's Faire", and it's arguably even more important. See, it started off as a containment zone for Internet Libertarians, but since shitposting was allowed there, it quickly got taken over by leftists on SA who were mocking the living poo poo out of the libertarians. The libertarians got the hint and left, and LF ended up being a no-holds-barred leftist forum where anything goes. As they'd chased out all the right-wingers and centristsincluding the forum admins, who'd declared it a containment zone and washed their hands of itthey ended up doing what internet leftists usually do, which is compete to see who's the bigger leftist. Originally it was a kind of ironic Maoism, but over time it transformed into a more sincere Marxism which became more and more extreme as time went on. And thanks to a massive influx of users from Tumblrthe circumstances of which are so completely loving bizarre that it'd take an age to explainthey adopted that site's then-idiosyncratic politics regarding identity, gender, and mental health. Like with all these insular communities, they just became more and more extreme as time went on. They became notorious for raiding and brigading other forums and websites for being right-wing, except by this point their own views were so extreme that they'd be attacking squishy liberals for being Fascist Enablers. And, naturally, racists and sexists and bigots and homophobes and whatever else they could think up. God forbid you'd ever even suggest that they might have personal issues or mental health issues, too. (Sound familiar?) Eventually the forum was shut down. Why, you might ask? Because at least one of these Internet Marxists was making death threats towards President Obama and the site admins were visited by the loving FBI. The admins understandably said "gently caress this and gently caress you", shut down LF, and basically kicked all of them out. But LF didn't disappear. LF metastasized. They made a bunch of different offsites where they screamed at each other and called each other entryists, counterrevolutionaries and (naturally) all manner of bigots. They notoriously raided and brigaded other sites, and were quite happy to doxx whoever was deemed "counterrevolutionary." Some of the offsites failed, some limped on (like the infamous Rhizzone), but most of the users eventually noticed that all the FYADsters had gone to Twitter and decided to follow them there. They became the core of Leftist Twitter. Maybe you were wondering why Twitter didn't just have a lot of shitposting, but a lot of leftist shitposting? And maybe you were wondering why Twitter seems to have such bizarre politics, and made a political shift in the early 2010s that came out of nowhere? (It's blamed on Gamergate, but it predates Gamergate by years.) Maybe you're wondering "okay, why did everybody seem to shift from a sort of left-liberalism in the 2000s to pretending that their favorite book is Capital III?" Laissez's. loving. Faire. (Oh, and also both 4chan and Gamergate started on SomethingAwful, but that's a whole other loving conversation. So is the site's ongoing issue with pedophile admins, mods, and high-profile users.) (And so is the fact that the very first "Bernie Bro" was apparently a SomethingAwful all-star named, uh, "Taintrunner". He slept on Jude Sady Doyle's couch because he was homeless. It apparently...didn't go well. It went so Not Well that it's the reason why Doyle hates Bernie supporters. No, really. )
