Rest in Peace my friend you will be greatly missed..

The expansion draft is coming! And you have an opportunity to win fabulous prizes!

How do I Play?
On July 17th the NHL will release a list of players from which the Seattle Kraken will choose to compose their first NHL roster. According to the NHL rules they will be selecting one player from each team other than the Vegas Golden Knights. They will be picking at minimum 14 forwards, 9 defenceman, and 3 goalies. Of the 30 players they choose, at least 20 must be under contract for next season.

Your challenge will be to also select a team from the available players, within the NHL rules (including salary cap rules). You will do this on a google form that will be posted as shortly after the protected lists are released. The form will also have a couple of tie-breaker questions. I will close selections either at the time of the draft (7PM EST on July 21st), or earlier if someone starts seriously leaking all the picks. This is a good incentive to get in early!

You can find a more thorough description of the rules on Capfriendly's site here, as well as an expansion draft tool that you could find either helpful or confusing.

What do I win?
There are two ways to win!!!

(1) All posters whose selections are closest to Seattle's actual selections will win a free forums upgrade, which I encourage you to spend on a Kraken themed avatar marking you as Seattle's first forums superfan.

(2) For the poster whose selections do the best over the course of the 2021-2022 season, you will win a fantastic selection of Seattle Kraken merch!!!

(3) There may also be secret prizes throughout the year. I dunno, I haven't decided yet.

How are points scored for the big prize?

I'm glad you asked!

For all players it will be the following:

2 points for a goal
1 point for an assist
0.1 points for a shot
-0.2 points per PIM

For goalies it will be:

2 points for a win
0.02 points per save
-0.1 per goal against

What else do I need to know?

Have fun!!!

Submit early, but don't submit too early, or else you end up like me during the Vegas expansion contest reading on a bus at 7AM in the morning that Dale Tallon was trading Marchessault and Reilly Smith to protect Petrovic and realizing you were completely hosed.

It's another exciting dynamic: you can hold out to try see the insane protection trades that happen but risk getting owned when picks start leaking and I have to close submissions.

I checked this through with the capfriendly simulator, and Gabriel Landeskog currently has the cap hit of his contract expiring in a few days ($5,571,429)

Here should be a list of submissions. I'm going to spend the rest of today entering them into a slightly more pleasant to read spreadsheet.

My goal it to teach myself to code well enough so I can have a sheet which auto-updates results through the season. No promises.

With eighteen correct selections, the winner of the free av is Kilza

Close behind, with seventeen correct selections, was NJD2005

Most of you seemed to get 10 right

And in a spectacular last place, with precisely two correct selections, is Ergo Propter Hog. You can take some additional pride if the Kraken end up being total rear end, since your team is the least like theirs.

I'm quite excited for this. In hindsight maybe we ought to have allowed two submissions per person: 'Best guess as to who will be picked' team and 'Best performing team you would have picked' since it turns out those are gonna be so different.

The point is that they are different, so you have to choose between pursuing the higher probability but lower reward path, or the much more difficult but much higher reward path.

Anyway, now that the season is over, I will start totalling things up tomorrow. I have an idea of what the prizes are going to be.

Okay, the final spreadsheet should be linked here. Feel free to double check that I haven't hosed anything up. Blank spaces are either where someone didn't enter a player, or where the player was illegitimate (there were a few cases of goons selecting someone from the wrong team).

Congratulations to Mike_V for just barely beating out defending champion zodiackylite. He was led by big years from Jeff Skinner and Matt Duchene, years so big they were able to overcome having selected three players who didn't play in the NHL at all.

But also, congratulations to literally everyone for selecting a team that scored better than the Seattle Kraken's actual selections. Every single one of you put together a superior team. You are all better than Ron Francis, and by a fairly large amount.

Player awards:

MVP: Alexander Ovechkin, selected only by zodiackylite, who registered a score of 169.8

LVP: Jonah Gadjovich, selected only by kilza, whose 74 penalty minutes paced him to a score of -7.2

Vezina: Anton Forsberg, selected only by Chad Sexington, whose starter role with Ottawa allowed him to accrue a score of 58.22

Mr. Nobody: Madison Bowey, severally selected, who managed no goals, no assists, no shots, and no penalties.
