What just hit me??

So you're in a dungeon or boss fight and something flashy just happened. Maybe you died, maybe not, but you didn't really see any tell on the ground, so what gives? How do I know when something is happening if there's not a big orange circle on the ground??

The answer: the enemy cast bar! Most bosses in dungeons, raids, and trials, have abilities with a cast time and a distinctive name to give you a hint at what they're doing. Knowing how to react to and use this information is a key part of combat design in FFXIV, especially at higher levels!

"But OP, where is the boss's cast bar? It's so small and my eyes are poor and feeble!"

That's what I'm here to help with. There's a very nice trick to make the enemy cast bar nice and visible.

First thing to do is to hit Escape, then HUD Layout.

Your Target Bar is likely near the top of the screen in its default position, but just left click on it, and click this little cog wheel button:

That will bring up the options for modifying the Target Bar, and you'll want to Check "Display Target Info Independently"

This option separates out the target's HP, Progress Bar (aka, cast bar), and Status (aka, their buffs and debuffs) into their own boxes that you can move and resize independently!

Crank the Element Size on Target Info (Progress Bar) to something girthier (I find that 160% is plenty).

Before:

And after:

Incredible. The power of the Echo is so strong with you now, you can see the future clear as day!

also if you're a sprout tank going into a dungeon for the first time: just say so in party chat!

"hi first time tanking"

it works. the times where anyone might get mad at you for not knowing what to do are so few and far between, nearly all of the time people will say hi back, offer tips, or tell you to just go for it and pull as much as you want.

if you get lost, ask where to go. if you don't know how much you can pull, just ask! people want commendations so they will often actually go out of their way to be helpful.

the (Hard) tag just means you're going back to the locale at a higher level, time has passed and the mobs and bosses are all different. It's still a regular-difficulty dungeon! just time-progressed and revamped.

a good example is Sastasha (Hard). original Sastasha is level 15, but the "hard" version is level 50, and full of horrible cthulhu monster that have possessed the pirates that used to be there!

So I’ve got my conjurer up to 14. When can I leave the starting area (by taking the airship, I assume?) to whatever town has the caster DPS starting job?

its the level 15 MSQ, so since you can see the level of the current quest you're at, you can guess how far you have to go in case you're overleveled.

Are professions a means of making money like in WoW, or something more?

you can definitely make money with the right product and timing (like making crafted gear, potions, and food when a new raid has just come out) but you can also make so much fun stuff like furniture, minions, barding, and glamour items.

you can also repair your gear yourself anywhere, including inside instances (normally you would have to leave to repair) and meld your own materia anywhere

also each crafting profession has its own series of class quests, which are generally pretty fun!

the problem is that MMOs take a lot of money and a whole lot of time to make. the gap in the market we have now is a result of a gap in development 4-5 years ago, because everyone figured WoW was always going to be king and nobody felt like it'd be worth it. but we're starting to see some new entries coming up soon, like New World and Ashes of Creation, that are really ambitious and have a lot of interesting ideas, that started out when WoW was starting to decline. their current accelerated decline will doubtless inspire even more to pop up, we just have to wait.

All DPS generally have the same defense, except for dragoons who are slightly tougher. Casters are a little weaker than physical DPS, but tend to have better defensive abilities/self heals. It doesn't matter much unless you're trying to solo FATEs or something, generally it's better to do quests with a DPS of some sort so you can kill mobs faster.

and every dps can do just fine questing if they got their Chocobo out! do not underestimate his power.

Mine is named Birdie, but its named after my dog. I need some cool bird armor, how do I get that?

there is a lot of barding you can craft, usually every trial boss has a themed barding you can make using a rare drop material (such as what my chocobo is wearing, it's from a shadowbringers trial boss), and there's some from achievements, gold saucer, FATE world bosses, grand company, etc.

a lot can be found on the market board too. many many options!

edit: also! if you have access to market board and a free company stable, you can change your chocobo's color! mine is Snow White, and while it's a bit of a complicated process involving stabling your chocobo, feeding it a specific selection of fruit, and waiting x amount of hours, there is a handy website for calculating the fruit you need for the color you want!

I'm somewhere in the beginning of Stormblood and I've decided to try my hand at tanking with gunbreaker.

My understanding of tanking when there are multiple tanks is that one is the main tank, and the other(s) will be second on enmity list and pick up adds, ready to swap in when needed. And in order to stay second on enmity, I'd just keep tank stance off for a few gcds in the beginning, and shirk the main tank if I ever start getting too close to them. But when do I know when to provoke and swap with the main tank (besides when they die)?

And in terms of defensive cooldowns, I should be using them when there are a lot of adds or a tankbuster-esque attack is about to hit right? The ones with a longer cast time...

It's been pretty fun so far!

knowing when to tank swap is pretty much reserved for end game fights like extremes and savage, where you'll be expected to have at least watched a video guide first most likely, either pugging or in a static. going through story mode raids i don't remember a case where a tank swap was necessary. you're totally correct on how to stay 2nd on aggro! if you do need to do a tank swap, usually the boss will be casting something, and you just provoke during the cast, and the other tank will shirk afterwards. very simple.

for defense you're right on the money again. part of the game of learning how to tank is figuring out which of the boss's moves are a tank buster as you're fighting. it's just a matter of remembering the name of whatever just hit you hardest.

if you're doing big dungeon pulls, you'll want to spread out your defense skills over time, to maximize efficiency while having at least something up most of the time. Arm's Length, Reprisal, Rampart are universal for all tanks and great for this. I don't play gunbreaker so i dunno what their class specific buttons are other than Superbolide which is the big oh-poo poo button which then makes the healer go oh poo poo :v:

Is there anything uber-important in the Coils of Bahamut story-wise?

it's important if you watched the ARR End of an Era trailer (which everyone should imo) and want to know "so what actually happened with Bahamut at the end there? did he die? where did he go?"

which, in-lore, is a HUGE deal because Bahamut destroyed the world almost, and folks don't really remember what happened.

there's a lot of incidental lore in the raid too that serves to fill out more backstory of stuff like the Allagans, the dragons, and primals. it's very cool and if you can find someone (like a friendly goon or two) they can carry you through them unsynced, so you don't have to worry about all the weird-rear end old raid mechanics, and just enjoy the story.

Do profession specializations matter beyond HW? And if so, are there any universal recommendations, like Goldsmith?

they do, because equipping the specialist "job stone" thing gives you extra crafting stats, which can put you over the threshold for making endgame stuff. which one you pick depends on what stuff you need to make. you can have 3 at a time, and can change for a scrip fee with a lockout of like, 3 changes per week? something like that.

What do you guys like to put on your Mouse4/Mouse5 buttons?

i have a lot of mouse buttons and so i have a lot of things bound to mouse buttons

but it's typically oGCDs on M4/M5, movement on shiftM4/M5, other stuff on control, and longer CD/situational stuff on alt

9 is bound to a 3rd side mouse button, and that's for stuff i hit pretty often or need to hit quickly, with more niche stuff going on ctrl or alt 9

the empty spaces are there if i need somewhere to put something that i will probably use once in a blue moon (like tank LB, CC stuff)

i've got another mouse button for push-to-talk, another one bound to 0 that i used to use for pet commands but that's not a thing anymore so now it's the replacement for Numpad 0 to let me target npcs easier

and my mouse wheel (besides M3, shift M3 and ctrl M3 which are all mounts) has two extra buttons if you press it left or right, and those are bound to things like Sprint, knockback prevention, teleport menu, timers menu, etc. using - and = keybinds. cause no game will ever recognize Mouse 8 or whatever the gently caress

this mouse even has *another* button below the wheel, under the hyperscroll toggle, that i have never used because it's in such an awkward place.
