Who's going to win Gold, Silver, and Bronze in the Covid Positive Test Olympics?

Make your picks which nation* has the most athletes barred from competition because they got the Rona. Alternates count. I say it's gonna be USA! USA! USA! followed by Team GB and then the Russians sneaking past the Italians for third.

* Among nations with plenty of access to vaccines - yes to Canada, no to Cameroon.

i think the New Zealanders will be chummy and end up running into someone who has it, then pass it to the rest of the team. my main money's on India, Russia and France, with a hail mary bid on Israel and Palestine trying to infect each other on purpose

I feel like the Italian and French will have a decent amount of people that test positive for COVID. But definitely Japanese civilians.

Yeah, the alternates and main team had been practicing separately because of the possibility of COVID.

Wow, if you can't trust a pedo creep who could only go to the games after his second suspension was overturned to follow Covid protocols, who can you trust???

And now the whole nation - pulpit and all - will take up the war-cry, and shout itself hoarse, and mob any honest man who ventures to open his mouth; and presently such mouths will cease to open.

I'm watching rowing and like every heat they're like "I wonder why _____ is missing?" Then later in the race or in the next race they're like "oh they have COVID it appears."

Yeah some unspecified inappropriate behaviour around a minor, then it seems he got his slap-on-the-wrist suspension extended for breaching his ban by either starting or working at a girls youth volleyball camp. He was well over 20 in both case, and could only compete because some creep sympathizers thought he was integral to the team I guess.

I wonder if the athletes are aware that getting covid can give you long term consequences like constant fatigue, lung damage, and all sorts of stuff that they need and will make them retire early.

Silver lining is maybe this will be the event that finally gets this topic in the larger discussion about covid.

On the "Japan itself" front: I don't know how much coverage this has been getting in the rest of the world, but the situation here in Japan is pretty ridiculous. There's a long history of vaccine reluctance in Japan, and the government has had some very counterproductive responses to that. There's been a lot of foot-dragging on approving and rolling out vaccines, and the whole program seems to be "make the process very slow to make it look like we're being extra careful, without actually doing anything that other countries aren't doing in half the time". As a result they're months behind much of the rest of the world in vaccine rollouts; I got my first dose three weeks ago, which was the very first appointment ever available for people under 65 in my village.

and some geniuses decided to allow a State of Emergency (which had been keeping COVID numbers in Tokyo to 200-300 per day) to lapse more than two weeks before the Olympics, so as of opening day it was over 1,000 new cases per day in Tokyo alone.

meanwhile American golfer Bryson DeChambeau tested positive so he's out, and Patrick Reed will be subbing in instead. At least this was caught before he came over to Japan? I think? :v:
