I lost to you once, monster. I shall not lose again! Die now, that our future can live!
Jade Carey almost certainly made the floor final. Good for her.

I hope Skinner gets through on vault.

Well, Carey crushed it, so Skinner almost certainly goes home with no chance to compete for a medal. Really sucks for her.

e: it's also really funny that Skinner beat three of the actual team members in two events

e2: results after this subdivision make the US team selection look very foolish

I didn't pay much attention to selection, did they do the same poo poo from 4 years ago where they selected Gabby for media narratives rather than pure medal math? Or is this more like the mens team where the guys who perform well at home choke internationally and the alternates are the ones who deliver

The short of it is that the committee just went with the top 4 AA scores from Trials, even though that meant leaving a fair number of points on the table in Vault and Floor. The stated reason was that they felt the team was going to be so much stronger than the competition that they didn’t have to worry about a few tenths here and there. Therefore, they went with the choices that seemed least controversial instead of what might be most optimal. (To be fair, there is a certain logic to it if you're only worried about someone getting a major injury and you want to have a backup who's at least competent everywhere.)

MyKayla Skinner, who finished 5th AA at trials, is a vault and floor specialist. Her scores there indicated that she would give the team the best scores overall if she were included over the 4th AA gymnast, who was Grace McCallum. If Skinner had been taken, the specialist spot likely would have gone to someone who was stronger on bars and/or beam.

Instead, they sent Skinner as the one specialist, even though Jade Carey had already qualified individually (through a separate process from the usual team selection). Carey is also a vault & floor specialist, and they’re both just one step down from Biles in those events, so it was inevitable that they’d lock each other out of spots in event finals.

As it turned out, Skinner would have improved the team's qualifying result by about .233, and Carey would've done even better if the committee had been willing to sacrifice her personal individual spot. Carey and Skinner finished 3rd and 4th among the Americans all around. Jordan Chiles, who was completely uncontroversial as a selection after finishing 3rd AA at trials, had a really bad day.

And with hindsight, it does mean it was the right team selection. Maybe they had an inkling something like this could happen especially with how much biles struggled mentally after Rio and needed time off. If your best all rounder isnt 100% you bring your next best ones

Well, I would still say that Skinner should’ve been either put on the team or not sent at all, although I guess we can’t know how that situation will look in a few days' time

A different specialist probably also would’ve struggled to qualify for any finals, but I think it was especially bad, given the US's situation with the extra nominative spot, to send two specialists who directly competed with each other for their only shots at medals. It sucks for the team dynamic. At least if someone else had gone for beam/bars and they got shut out by Biles and Lee, both gymnasts who finished ahead were putting in great contributions to the team score.

This whole format with 4 team members and one specialist outside the team is a bad one and I’m glad it’s going away.

Biles withdrew from vault and bars. Skinner replaces her on vault.
