We need more women in STEM, and by that, I mean skateboarding, television, esports, and magic.

NBC's payment for broadcasting rights is I think an outright majority of the IOC's total funding, so that buys them a lot of scheduling leverage.

It was one of the conspiracy theories from Rio. That NBC paid so much, they could get swimming scheduled for US prime time (or for peak audiences) which meant the US swimmers didn't have to do time zone adjustments when travelling from the US so they had an advantage. At best this was convenient, at worst it was NBC using their money to give US swimmers as much an advantage as the could (and so medals, and so more viewers.)

(The Olympics are wild and I love them.)

Unsure if NBC had this but on CBC for the 1st men’s semi final for the American their anecdote was “his sister was shot and they advocate for gun control” :captainpop:

There is so much surrounding Olympic money that it would not surprise me at all if you could pay your way into scheduling certain events at certain times. For example, it would be super rude to the Dutch to schedule speed skating to run at 0300 CET, but I could very well see the Olympic committee doing that if the Dutch didn't pony up the $.

It’s almost like Michael Andrew’s training method of just swimming as fast as possible at home in a tiny pool and doing nothing else is not a great way to win medals.

The fact that NBC let Michael Phelps even try his hand at live commentating tells you all you need to know about how much NBC respects swimming commentary
