I like that damaging a car to the "on fire and about to explode" point results in the driver (and passengers) stopping and trying to get out. It just feels so much smarter than the GTA "WE'LL EXPLODE TOGETHER, THEN" attitude.

Escort was my absolute most hated mission in this game and somehow I managed to forget that the clients would make requests from you before the pleasure meter would start filling again. All I remember was seething hatred towards the amount of vehicles you'd get thrown at you.

Yeah, the story goes from development that one of the senior devs was just a really big pro wrestling fan and wanted to have a "The Boss gets thrust into a wrestling storyline" bit, which is how we got Killbane.

Yeah, Killbane was not the best villain the series ever had. Honestly, the best villain I think was Zinyak. A refined, cultured, well educated rear end in a top hat with a wit was dry as the desert, whose entire goal in life seemed to be spoiling the Boss's fun.

SR3 is an absolute mess. The plot is all over the place and it can't stick to a tone or genre. And the misogyny is turned up to 11. It's by far the low point for the series. It was fun to play, and I was very enthusiastic about it when it came out, but I'd never actually recommend it to anyone now.

SR4 and GOoH are obviously not trying to be the same type of game as SR1 and SR2, and I can see why that would be off-putting or disappointing if you wanted sequels more true to the series' origins; in fact, I'd be thrilled if someone made a modern version of a Saints Row 1 & 2 style game. But they're good, fun games on their own merits - although they do rely a bit heavily on set pieces, which can be tiresome if you're replaying them. But they work well the first time through. Saints Row the Third, though, can't decide what it's trying to be and ends up going in several different directions all at the same time.

Zinyak was a great villain for SR4. He wouldn't have worked outside of that game though. A villain like that wouldn't fit in either of the first two games.

Also, he wasn't refined and cultured, he just thought he was. Quoting Shakespeare like some highschool teacher's pet.

In case you were wondering why the Saints are in control of so little territory to start the game, consider that they sent the new guy to take out a weapons factory, alone, with four bombs with the combined explosive power to level said factory presumably shoved into his cargo pants pockets.

The Series X isn't doing a whole lot in this particular case, honestly. Saints Row already ran at a locked 30 fps without screen tearing on the One X and there hasn't been an FPS Boost or 4K update or anything like that, so there's a ton of performance overhead on the Series X and I would assume the Series S would run SR1 just as well.

Dang, well, I guess even Victor can’t stand up to rapid fire and an exploding car. I usually see him put up more of a fight in LPs of this game.

Kudos to the developers for mission variety- GTA is usually just blow up everything and kill everyone, this game has you not blowing up too much, dangerous graffiti, and home defense.

Episode 6: Last Year's Fall Collection

Today, we finish up the Carnales missions and deal with Angelo once and for all (after some severe cutscene idiocy - I mention GTA IV, but that one scene is *so* stupid it honestly wouldn't look out of place in Mass Effect 3). The episode title will at least make sense in context.

The main gang storylines really aren't very long at all, so all three of them will fit nicely into about three episodes each. I'm going to assume that is why Volition decided to force you into the side activities to earn respect, because the game would be only about six hours long if you could just mainline the story missions and complete all of them without retrying a bunch.

When you stash a car, is it one copy or permanent access to it? Is unlocking a car distinct from that?

If it works the same as the later games, the vehicle will be saved in its current state and you'll have to pay to repair it if it's damaged - unless it's destroyed, in which case it's fully repaired for free. Any customisations you've made to it are saved regardless. And unlocked vehicles are just special variants that you can't recreate yourself, but otherwise function exactly the same as any car you store.

And yes, it is objectively better to destroy a vehicle and get it automatically repaired for free than to leave it in a state of disrepair or take it to a mechanic. But after a short while you'll have enough money coming in that you won't care.

It's my low-key favourite improvement the Saint's Row series made over GTA - once you've stashed a car you don't have to take care to return it to your garage any time you take it out. You can spend a bunch of time and money customising a great car with all the conveniences, and be able to regularly use it!

One has to wonder about how Troy knows so much about the local police station and its evidence room. Oh well, Stillwater’s justice system is messed up anyway- what does it matter? And Dex, you go back and forth on your competence and bravery- where exactly do you see your future with this gang?

Oh well, at least the bad grammar is over with the demise of Los Carnales- I hope.

The way storing vehicles works is possibly the dumbest thing about the GTA games. You can save a car, but then you can't ever use it because if you do it's almost guaranteed that you'll never see it again. What is even the point of that?

I always thought a reboot was realistically the only way they could do a new Saints Row, because how do you even follow up the craziness that is SRIV and Gat Out of Hell?

One new Saints Row idea I've had in the back of my head for years is "the ending of SR1 turning out very differently and leading to an alternate SR2" (I'm being as vague as possible here because this is ostensibly a no-spoilers thread) and I'm kinda hoping they do something like that!

The only downside to your plan there is I can't figure out how they'd recreate that iconic line from the start of SR2. And that line is powerful and good.

so y'know, we'll see! SR1 could really, really use a reboot if they're going to reboot any. I'd follow that up shortly with 'actually finish SR3' because it really felt half baked. :v:

The bit that always annoyed me in SR2 was that there was no way to know what type of vehicle was required without starting the race, so you'd show up with your super-upgraded car and it turns out it's a bike race so it swaps you into some random, generic motorbike.

Gothsheep

I don't know if they can realistically go from zero to bonkers with a remake. Part of what makes SR3 and 4 work was that you had the ramp-up of the prior games. By the time Saints Row 2 came out, your character had proven themself as a stonecold badass, so it allowed them to get away with being a ball of crazy in the second game. And that being a mass of chaotic insanity in SR2 make it easy to just ramp up the whole world being completely insane by 3.
