Olympic Rugby 7s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEbjBodEddw
the men's gold medal match from 2016

Introduced at Rio 2016, Rugby 7s is a fast-paced game of throw the ball only backwards and tackle the dude with it. Compared with the form of the game that others may know (rugby union and rugby league), 7s games are only 15 minutes long - 7 minute halves - and with only 7 players per team on the field. But with the field remaining the standard size, there's guaranteed to be space for the itty bitty fast guys to find and dash off into.

The men's and women's tournaments are being hosted at Tokyo Stadium in west Tokyo, which was a venue for the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Both tournaments run this week, July 26-31. Because it's played behind closed doors, that means the Rugby 7s tradition of a beer snake will not be possible :rip:

Men's Tournament (July 26-28)

Group A: New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, South Korea
Group B: Fiji, Great Britain, Japan, Canada
Group C: South Africa, U.S., Kenya, Ireland

Women's Tournament (July 29-31)
Group A: New Zealand, Russia OC, Great Britain, Kenya
Group B: Canada, France, Fiji, Brazil
Group C: Australia, China, U.S., Japan

Top two from each group qualify for the medal knockouts, 7th and 8th place also make it into there, and there will be minor tournaments for the final placings as well.

I missed the first match which was Fiji-Japan, but Korea has earned itself a sin bin in the second half against NZ which seems...sub-optimal.

Rugby sevens is p good

Question from someone who doesn't know anything about rugby: do the guys playing on these teams also play "normal" rugby, or do people specialize in sevens?

I thought at this level most have specialised into 7s.

I know the Irish team is made up of a lot of guys who were either spotted young-ish, or couldn't make it in the main provincial teams, but in either case they were identified as having potential to make it in the 7s game rather than the traditional game.

There's a couple of tiers of international tournaments (Ireland only recently made it to the top-ish level) played year round, so I'd imagine most teams are made up of guys training for and playing 7s only.

(Even if they all grew up and were pulled out of the normal 15s route.)

The Aussies are a traditional union/league power but their 7s side could be lacking here this time?

Ya like Little Wayne?

Australia are traditionally a middling team in 7s.

Hell, they weren't even a major rugby union power until the 70s.

Japan had an incredible implosion at the end of the match and basically gave it up completely the last few minutes.

I was just watching rugby for quite possibly the first time and I've come to this conclusion:

Life is meaningless, rules do nothing but get in the way, and the only thing that makes sense is chaos.

Glad to hear we have a new fan!

If you watch a few games it will start coming together. Basically you can't pass forward, you have to release the ball when tackled, and things like the scrum (when 3 people from each team push into each other) and the throw in (when they throw the ball in) are just ways to resume play when the ball goes out of bounds or infractions occur.

Scoring is almost identical to American football other than some "extra point" nuances and slightly different values - 5 for a touch and 2 for the kick.

E: Oh, also the guy who throws the ball in is called a hooker, which is a solid name

Watching my wife play rugby when we first met was a confusing ball of chaos. All I knew was pass it back and then people ran into each other.

I still donít quite get things but itís fun to watch. Sheís off to Vancouver to watch the 7s and I believe thereís a tourney in Alberta the week before too.

I wonder at what point the US players decided to go with Rugby instead of American Football with the million dollar contracts.

Didn't the American Rubgy7's team at one point have a guy who was among the 100 fastest track sprinters in the world?

edit: this guy, 40th 100m sprinter in the US at the time he quit to play rugby, and wikipedia says he is on the current team

Looking at the roster most of them played mid level american football in university before switching to rugby or concurrently with playing rugby. It looks like Isles was the only one who even made an NFL practice squad.

Nate Ebner, the Patriots safety competed in the 2016 Olympics and narrowly missed out on the squad this time round, from what I recall he was pretty good too.

that still means you are good at football

Always a pleasure watching Fiji, just caught the Canada game. Love the new kit, and their play is absolutely loving effortless, amazing

Wasnít impressed with the US earlier, still lots of running sideways trying to work out what to do with the hall.

Argentina completely clowning on Korea, I guess so they can make sure they get whatever tie breakers might be in place later with Australia and NZ playing.

United States and South Africa coming up shortly to finish up the pool play. Although they both are already qualified.

Also, I guess Ireland needed to win by 7 to get the 7-8 qualifying spot, but Kenya scored at the end and then Ireland had the ball for the last play and accidentally threw it out of bounds to only win by 5 points
