Stuff like the torture houses became popular after it was revealed that the Bush administration was rounding up muslims and torturing them in response to 9/11. Along with horror movies like Saw and Hostel, they taped into the cultural fear of being rounded up and tortured to death.

If the owner marketed the house as sinners being tortured in Hell, at least one or two deep south states would let him set up shop unhindered.

A lot of white people stuff makes sense once you realize that they are people who have faced so little adversity in their life that they're suffering from undiagnosed ennui.
