Inspired by Classic Comrade's List of cities in the talking heads song "cities", and their attributes in the PYF List thread, I thought it would be fun to breakdown songs until they're effectively just a bunch of ideas and things neatly organized into categories. It's fun and easy to do! Here's one to get everyone's deuce revved: Piano Man by Billy Joel Patrons: Bill, the Piano Man (narrator) An old man Paul Davy Businessmen Employees: John The waitress The manager Characteristics: Bill plays piano Old man is old The patrons are in the mood for a melody John is a bartender John is a friend of Bill's John gets Bill his drinks for free John is quick with a joke John is quick to light up your smoke Paul is a real estate novelist Paul never had time for a wife Davy is in the Navy and probably will be for life Actions: Regular crowd shuffles in An old man making love to his tonic and gin Paul is talking to Davy The waitress is practicing politics The businessmen slowly get stoned The businessmen are sharing a drink they call "Loneliness" The manager gives Bill a smile The patrons put bread in Bill's jar Observations: It's nine o'clock on a Saturday It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday The piano smells like a carnival The microphone smells like a beer Moods, desires, despair: The old man wants Bill to play him a sad and sweet memory The patrons are all in the mood for a melody Bill has them feeling alright There's someplace that John would rather be The businessmen are lonely The patrons want to forget about life for a while Demands: Sing us a song Sing us a song tonight Inquiries: "Man, what are you doing here?"
