As the cloud of nanomachines passes over, it seems to wash away a very thin film of psychic grime.
"Hmm, some kind of rampant autodoc? Very thorough, would be nice to examine the original strain."

~~~
Bella stares at the flashing lights for some moments
"At this distance and to cover that large of a group I'm going to have to be somewhat loud. I can mask the directionality and if their psychics are low tier, or... well, I suppose nonexistent, they won't even understand what happened, but they'll still know that something has happened and they'll be on alert. Then again, if they're hostile they're likely to be already on high alert from any threats from the pod... hopefully they'll interpret it that way?
"The nanomacines might help establish a broad sympathetic link. Normally would be better to needle focus on a single target, except that tends to cause fairly intense backlash. If they weren't already hostile or at least on the fence, could cause problems."
She glances over at the rest of the group. If there aren't any objections she settles in, small gestures and murmured words strangely reminiscent of a spell.
"Flame... mirror... lens..." <LIGHTHOUSE>
An impression of the sky inverting in color, thin trails of black smoke, and an unyielding bright white light blankets the area from all sides, all gone in a moment.
"Hmm. Maybe overdid it?"
Rolling to get a general idea of the group's disposition, with possible mind melding and weird little insights into anecdotes and vibes. Got a 5 in the Discord.
"It seems..."
Bella trails off, hesitant and unsure, and the slowly creeping sense of grime pulls back into herself. The little bits of emotion and color pull back as well, limited only to the raw audio of her vocoder. Very disturbing.
"It seems they're just survivors from the crash? Scouting. I'm mostly sensing... anticipation. Hope, even, but the sort of resigned hope of someone who knows that help will still come uncomfortably late."
~~~

She tilts her head, curious.
"They're not running from the ship, are they? I agree that this feels unsettling, but perhaps the situation is merely... unremarkable, sensible. They crashed in a remote area with thankfully no threats, and are taking a short look around. We will make contact, and retrieve them without any further issue. Everyone: With Bella's scan and Narinth's bold walking directly towards them in the open(exhaustion is a big bitch against protocol, as training leads would warn) you hail one of the scouting groups and are soon brought up to speed on the status of the crashed evacuation ship.

: "Thank the Matron you found us! We've gone silent because we've heard at least three broadcasts already.. kind of a weird robocall from slavers, but then the jackholes that chased them off told us that as soon as they find us they're stripping this "blessing from above" to match their "blessing from below", whatever in the abyss that means..." Just a casual talking fella in an environmental protection suit. His head tilts and he does boggle briefly at some of you being unsuited, though his companion gives the slightest incline of the head to Penelope in approval. "And the third is just messed up... look, we need engine repairs, if we can get airborne at all we can cross atmosphere easy, but the engine block safety locks are hard engaged. Likely we'll spin on one end of our axis or just blow up if we go around that and hotwire it."

: "I'm on it!" Veri takes your tools and parts from the Bumper on a hover-dolly, hastily moving in with one of the scouting groups to enter the ship. Soft lights on the interior suggest that at least they aren't huddled in the dark waiting to die! Yet.

If you received an unknown comms request with no unusual downsides for accepting it(i.e. being scanned by SomAI) would you accept it, or try to maintain further radio silence by not doing so?

Players: Yes, we'll receive it.

Everyone: Something is broadcasting loud and clear, with no attempt to encrypt or use a specific channel. It's as though it were broadcasting to as many as it could at once, including a weak psionic broadcast that Bella can detect. It feels similar to the earlier call from the planet, though maybe just in delivery method.. a different signal altogether, only distantly adjacent to that strange primordial call, or the shock you experienced with Reyla at her mental screening. This planet seems to have a surplus of broadcasting... things.

: As it speaks clearly over the radio as well, there's no mystery as to what is being said. Arin translates, and Bella can feel the intents from the psionic part of the broadcast. "Worry not, dear receivers. You will not know torture at the hand of "skulltist" psychotics, for my brood shall bring salvation to you shortly. Wait indoors, draw close, share good memories and love with your kin. Our harvester shall protect and escort you to a new... understanding." You could swear you hear the words reverse and curl at times, though how your ears would see... the reverbs are ghastly, to say the least.

And something bellows in the distance, not a part of the broadcast, horrid and simply loud.

: "... What do we do?! I trust any of these freaks about as far as I could push the drat ship!"

: With a heavy sigh Reyla leers at the helmet briefly, then looks to the rest of your squad. "It's a hold out. Fighting is going to be rough... what can we do to put our thumb on the scales? All we need to do is delay until takeoff."

You've access to the resources of the Evac-Ship as well as some extras from the Bumper. Broad ideas first, skill checks later, unless you're feeling risky(or have yet to cash in your wild nanite boosted rolls!)

"...Nanites." SEBASTIAN shrugs, his body now infected like the others. Not a strong reaction, but it would be something annoying to deal with. Until it can be fixed, meanwhile, he would have to mind himself. Finding the other survivors, however, was a relief, the House needed every hand it could get, and thus it was in his interest to rescue as many of them as possible.

When meeting the crashed ship crew, the butler nodded at the man with the environmental suit. Hrm, on retrospect even him would have welcomed using that thing. "You met natives? From what you say they might just be scavengers, strange religious ritual or not. Worry not, by the time I'm done, we will be long gone before they return for the ship." SEBASTIAN nodded while following Veri towards the engine room, his arm now opening into several parts where many repair tools would begin to prod out of their steel compartments, with the android quickly beginning to look for any signs of damage into the ship's engine and repair them as soon as possible.

Penelope: You're roused by a kick after Simon provides you with a dose of Whiplash, the Vular classic. Named for the old(or not) doctrines of imperial slavery, where the effects rouse you to work and leave you feeling withdrawn and hopeless much later. A pretty potent upper and one where people who ask about the formula too often get in trouble with officials.

"Sorry... just following your orders." Spook is your typical Drow +1, extra child of a minor House noble: forgotten, soon socially isolated, destined to grow up withdrawn. Reading about heroics inspired her to enter the military of Ariness and have fun exploding due to a jetpack malfunction rather than waiting to die. She's pretty literal, mousy if tall and lanky, a classic Drow beauty if somebody might take the metaphorical glasses off her face. Base Art

: "We've already whipped up, ma'am!!" Frund is only slightly atypical of the Humans in Ariness. Their lot in the Empire wasn't bad, but they always feel the need to push harder and inevitably crash into the rigid racial and cultural preferences. It isn't impossible for non-Drow to get ahead, there's just only so many that do. The rest tend to put their enthusiastic spirit into other things, like being a jetpack jockey. A massive jock, an overgrown kid kept a bit lean just by his tendency to forget to eat and sleep for a day or two at a time. Base Art

: "Hmm." Pan, named for the flat trigger of a bear trap, is your iceman. If his pulse has ever risen in his life he's never shown it. You have to assume, he's the new recruit in light of the gaggle of little lizardfolk that joined up after your prison and escape break. Frund and Spook correct him on wearing the jetpack upside down and share a laugh, from guffaws to muted chuckles to muted, scaley grins. Base Art

Drazyn: No Twists/Costs: Your head feels clearer then you'd expect as you help Narinth, barely able to keep from getting in the way.

Narinth: You down more trees on the West path than the other, accounting for the availability of trees and all. You dig and line pits on all three lanes, though the East path demands the pit be moved back a bit as digging through the stone or hauling it in time isn't possible.

Penelope: The crew whips up, lights up and takes to the skies.

---

The Bumper is brought aboard the evac craft, squeezing every extra bit into the ships matching garage with its own light vehicles.

: "We got blips on thermal. Real pings on radar further out, moving with purpose. Something big... repairs are going well but they're not going instantly, you know? Keep us clear, please!"

Everyone: You might expect an attack... people opening fire onto you, the approach of "the harvester", vehicles or monsters or stars know what... but all is quiet. Too quiet, for too long. A shout rises from the skies, muffled by distance, and then clear gunfire comes through.

: "Contact, all fronts." The Squad opens fire and thins out 8% of the approaching numbers. Sounds like they're shooting fish in a barrel!

Or worms in a forest! A writhing blank of wriggling, feeling flesh surges along all lines, passing over the trees steadily with mild slowdown, and wriggling along and through the pits effortlessly, too light and clingy to trigger any. They don't seem particularly dangerous if you're not covered by them but this can't be good.

He shook his head. Right. There would be time to dissect them to check for a primitive brain later on. For now, he had to focus on other things. Such as Lulu's ferocious hissing; perhaps she wanted to prove that she was the most fearsome worm-like being around these parts, not these inferior carnivores. Drazyn was only too eager to give her the command to satisfy her craving as he braced the pistol and started shooting in the writhing mass, obliterating specimen after specimen and hoping that some would remain in solid enough state for him to study afterwards. Certainly, those exposed to Lulu's acid wouldn't be.

Sadly, however, Lulu's powerful acid seemed to get stuck on the trees and miss the annelid menace entirely! Worried about his pet, Drazyn stepped in front of it, hoping to strike at more of them-

Music(Turok 2 - The Death Marshes)

Narinth: Stepping up first you receive this generous gift of metaphorical fish in a barrel, the worms advancing as a solid mass that makes missing nearly impossible. With almost a bullet for every one of them you open firing, shredding a nice percentage of the mess.. and lighting the ground up with incendiaries pays off when they advance through it until the raw mass of their cooked flesh finally smothers the burning, more crawling over their fallen. 9% Damage done!

Drazyn: You and Lulu advance and try a complicated sweeping maneuver, barely sending the wave back slightly. Lulu has to mind your own traps, after all. You deal 1% Damage to the mass and hold your ground, trying something risky... while you think about it, you wonder if perhaps the shadowy voice offering your group strange boons has anything in common with the strange hivemind voice declaring intent to attack and absorb the evac ship. Between two voices and the naturally occurring nanites you wander if perhaps there's a lot of otherworldly powers at play... and how careful you should be working with one before you know more about it?

SEBASTIAN: You and your Trooper try to stall a lane, firing into the mass. Not your best showing, 1% Damage done to the mass, but you observe them as they move. They're effectively mindless and known no fear, as well as being adept at moving across all terrain, albeit slowly. They also seem to be dangerous in these great numbers, overwhelming and moving over entities blocking them. A truly horrible swarm!

Bella: (Lulu's in G1, moved to G2) Bella forces worm to fight worm, one clump of the mass surging backwards and small worms needling and biting at one another in a temporary blind frenzy. Bella's efforts deal 6% Damage to the worm horde!

Penelope: Moved to D-1. (Adding Penelope to the Squad's daily firings) Combined fire for 12%. Further hooting, hollering, shooting. The worms are dying nicely, there's just far too many of them!

(And chipping in another 2% Damage for Reyla and moving her in one of the future maps to H14.)

---

The worms surge ahead. The West path is blocked up nicely, the worms forced to reorient and surge ahead together in a messy, graceless bulk. They've backed up nicely due to this at least. The worms on the other paths surge ahead and overrun those in their path...

A wriggling, biting, seething mass of flesh overruns Drazyn and the Maid Trooper! This deals 4 Damage to each and Drazyn is Sickened, subtracting 1 from every result he gets. The sheer mass of invasive flesh is absolutely disgusting and vile! Lulu is provoked, but the Worm advance can't be nullified without moving out of the affected space as the attack happens. Trying to withstand it is futile... and gross!

The Maid Trooper vanishes under the mass, beginning to dissolve messily. Amid the shambling mass of worms advances a humanoid figure covered in similar wriggling red flesh. They turn a proper rifle on the downed droid and fire with a controlled burst, executing them. Similar figures advance calmly with the worms, not lurching or stumbling, but keeping to cover and watching your group warily. At least as warily as helmets, visors and goggles can allow for. There's always body language.

Worms: 61/100%, Deal 1d4 on contact and Sicken/Cover their targets. Slow.

Problem is, Drazyn had miscalculated how much time he had to at his disposal, and now he was paying with his mistake in worm bites. He clenched his teeth in horrified disgust as he backed off from the chewing horde and hid behind Lulu as she vomited acid on his assailants. He began to pull them away for himself and throw them to the ground, but... he stopped for a second, holding one. When you succeed at a roll to identify an object or its origin by touch, smell, or taste, gain an Action Point.

By arguing that I was "identifying" something by finding it an appropriate name. But I can't do it if I don't make a roll, so I don't think I can unless the GM allows me a Biology roll for this silliness.

COMBAT STUFF

Lulu takes two steps backwards; Drazyn positions himself directly to her northeast and gets rid of his worms (loses sickened).

Lulu does a simple Ranged Attack. She gets a 4 and so does 2 damage. She also inflicts 3 damage on them for due to them giving her an opportunity earlier! That's a lot of acid. Finally, she Marks them again.

Narinth keeps the trigger pressed and the bullets flowing as the worms continue their mindless advance, but the explosion she had been anticipating as they overran the demolition charge was nowhere to be seen. poo poo! "The proxy fuses aren't working, detonate them manually if you have to!" She barks over her shoulder, just in time to catch a glimpse of Drazyn digging his teeth into one of the worms. "Yo Drazyn, the gently caress?" She blurts out incredulously, only to raise her eyebrow curiously a second later, "...They taste any good?" She sweeps her weapon over the pile of worms and takes aim at the explosive she knew was buried underneath. "I could go for some barbecue!"

Immediately after Drazyn is swarmed with biting worms, SEBASTIAN would manage to connect back with the base. Surrounding the young elf with a protective shield and standing between him and the worms, the grimoire she held began to glow with a soothing light that would patch some of his wounds while the butler himself shifted forth to the side. "Master Elph-Ariness, if you are that much in need for your organic consumption of food, I must ask you to at least wait until we are done with this so I can prepare the ingredients in a more civilized manner..."

At the sight of the humanoid worms Bella grows more quiet and yet more agitated, hissing out a confused and cautious "...could it be, The Worm that Walks?"

She takes a step forward, and gathers her thoughts into an immense psychic hammer blow that launches the mass of worms off the cliff, scattering them into the other approaching worms. The blasting charge swings back up and around, making a thin warning tone as she arms it, attention drawn to the humanoid forms.
Her attention flits over the worms, over the entire field, and a growing sense of unease and anxiety, bordering on terror, starts to seep out.

Move to H2, Repulsion on worms, 6 for a crit dealing 4 damage and pushing them 3 squares south, control boost to Slow them until the end of their next turn, assess for another 6.
For assess, are there any special powers the humanoids have, do they have any particular special traits over and above being worms; for the encounter, are there more hidden (or approaching?) enemies, is there a non-obvious escape route, is there something I can use against the enemies (particularly, is there a good soft spot for this explosive), and finally, of course, who's really in charge here?

Didn't you mean to ask about flowers?
Penelope: (IRL stuff, adding to Squad until further notice.) More errant firing, chipping in 6% Damage to Worms!

Drazyn: 5% Damage to Worms! (Giving you a soft Biology roll since I think it's valid but also no penalties since I'm rolling it without asking you.) Biology 1! No AP earned. You dare to sample the "Tanian Fangworm." As you bite into it and get it much closer to your eyes you pick up on finer details. The worms seem to have irregular design across individuals. The one you picked up looks like a toothy worm, but the latter half of its "body" looks like a humanoid knucklebone section? And the worms you rip off yourself, some of them look like animated fingers, their tips melting to the little gaping bloody maws. The effect is not unlike the worm mass is a crawling carpet of flesh!

If you weren't already tapped out on being utterly repulsed you'd be sick all over again. Good thing you overloaded your tolerance and gag reflex... this time!

Narinth: (Moving you to I14 then.) 6% Damage to Worms and a flat +25% Damage to the Worms, as well as +50% Damage to the Red Humanoid! The explosion tears through a great bulk of the mass and the lingering flames ruin worms that attempt to mindlessly slough through it, the fallen log providing outstanding kindling!

Bella: You disperse most of the Southern Worm mass, leaving just a shambling mound before the approaching Red Humanoid. You try to determine what you know about terrible gatherings of lumbricina families.

They seem to be supernaturally dull, mentally closed off, emitting no passive background noise or "inner monologue" thoughts. The tremors in the ground suggest something is burrowing and you know the Harvester is coming, whatever that is. The non-obvious escape route would be.. hmm, you could scale the cliff to the East and head closer to the strange nanite phenomenon. This explosive seems wasted in the South but the greatest bulk of worms remains on the West route.

Who's in charge... well, you can feel all voices and a certain tingling leading down, underground.

---

Enemy Movement: The Red Humanoids advance, triggering pit traps. Results of 1, 3, 1 going from West to South to East! There's sprays of blood from each and a bit of gore from the middle pit but they seem to react to being impaled... well, crawling out of the pits steadily despite their wounds. +10%, +25%, +10% Damage to relevant Humanoids!

They open fire! Two shots ring clear upon Bella, a crude harpoon gun and a primitive rifle piercing her hide in equal measure for 4 Damage total(Tank Passive applicable)! The one facing Bella down fires a crude pulse laser pistol at her, scorching her for Environmental Suit Damage, making her more vulnerable to Worm and Nanite effects until End of Encounter! The last fellow stares at Narinth with unflinching, bloody malice, body scorched horribly and writhing mass of similar worm-flesh wriggling along it, anchoring and pulling up a crude bolt-action rifle, loosing a clean 4 Damage shot into her abdomen!

Reyla: (Doing Reyla's actions together because... forgot! Haw!) Striding forward to support Narinth, Reyla flicks out her staff and scythes an acid-green line of energy across the Red Humanoid, though it veers to the side with an unnatural stomp. Marked by Reyla and attacking Narinth, Reyla closes in to seize the Red Humanoid by the shoulder and eviscerate it along the stomach in a matching wound, dealing 20% Damage to it. It wobbles and arches back unnaturally, as though it spine were broken, but the arms and legs stand upright, the gun still raised and the head angled down to stare forward.

: "SOMETHING'S HERE, RADAR IS HOT!" As the rifle discharge loudly pierces the creepy ambience of the night you can feel the ground tremble horribly.

Two pits split and form in the ground amongst your group, a pair of massive writhing tentacles erupting, as big as pillars! One immediately slams into and *splorches* across the surface of the ship, several messy individual tendrils piercing slightly into the metal, peeling and trying to wrench plates off. More tendrils grow and spread from the base mass as it tries to build up that strange, terrible grip! The other whirls about in the air overhead, alien senses trying to detect something to do void knows what to!

A bit of focus primes the nearby mine and with a little circle around, she summons up a giant shoving wall of force, throwing down the worms and the explosive towards the humanoid figure, engulfing it in a modest fireball.
She looks like she's about to make a quip ("front towards enemy"), but it quickly becomes clear that she perhaps made the wall of force a bit too wide and the vast majority of the worms are in fact tenaciously holding on to the cliffside.

"Ah."

Resolutely, she turns her head as if they are no longer her problem, and circles around, casting a minor bit of static on the nearby tentacle.

The West Tentacle violently lashes out, barely brushing by Lulu(Miss!) in a total blind slam to its Northwest, then slamming the ship to the North in a rapid motion. For a few moments she locks eyes (or whatever) with the creature, space beggining to warp and pulse around her, an echo shimmering over it in the distance... and then she shakes her head, muttering "no, can't manage it..."

Narinth: You set-up a violent, decisive explosion that will rend the tentacle to twitching tendrils and messy piles of gore, clearing its grip from the ship. You're able to escape into it by the nearest door!

Drazyn: Lulu can get in just fine, and you dramatically damage the rampaging tentacle as it comes down just a hair short of the door and you two trying to enter it before it blindly slams to the side, upending one of the explosive canisters and sending it rolling. Almost struck it! You two get aboard safely!

SEBASTIAN: In a mad dash you make for the ship and board it, your maids and Bella dealing decisive blows that...

Bella: ... rend the Western Tentacle into a halved mess, a shriveled, twitching limb that lacks the muscle tissue to raise itself and shlorps in a blind circle around its emergence point. You safely get aboard with SEBASTIAN and the maids!

Penelope, Reyla: As the Harvester crashes forward and pulps the fallen log beneath it a tidal wave of worm-flesh follows in its wake, the great hulking red figure leering at those fleeing with hundreds of eyes locked into the patchwork nightmare that makes it, a figure made from the raw flesh of countless humanoids churned together into the basic red building block of "muscled tissue", excess bits surging, bursting at the seams and flaking off into wriggling worm-like tendrils along it for a moment before rejoining and merging!

... The Squad detonates the trap at the West Log and blows away the autonomous worm tide there, then ducks in on their jetties and boards the ship. Reyla warps through the space between the tentacles and takes up the last cannister with a prudent "Hup." before boarding the ship as the ground begins to heave, another massive tentacle bursting up between the first two. It blindly senses at the air as the Harvester causes the ground to quake with an approaching step, a massive hand reaching for the vessel...

---

Everyone: As the ship is larger enough to account for a great deal of refugees and practical infrastructure equipment it is no tight fit and you're able to throw yourself, badly Exhausted, onto any spread of floor that'll have you. Ariness crew in full-body environmental suits arrive quickly with practical first aid, de-contamination kits and a thermo of warming liquor. The ground lurches beneath your feet and buckles, an impact from the wall shaking everyone with concern.

Then everyone feels a sensation of weightlessness for a second before the ship shakes again, the engines ignite and a rip-roaring departure is heard, only a slightly troubling rattling sending vibrations through the floor. A distant muffled roar fades away and only the hum of your engines is present, then the concerned murmuring of group conversation from the halls near you... sharp voices cut in on your comms and coordinates are issued, you can swear you hear Mei yelling about the Bumper, and then all is quiet.

You've escaped!

SEBASTIAN of course didn't really mind cramped places as much as organics, after all, the cell they kept him on the prison was rather spacious compared to this. Nevertheless, Lady Reyla would likely need some more space for herself, and he would try to provide as much as he could, even if it came to pushing away other members of the group to do so. Drazyn, however, had a point...

She points at the besuited Simon.
"That was impressive, I like you. Stick around."

She then addresses the rest of the group, particularly Narinth.
"Right, exactly, we need to establish contact with the natives much more quickly. A being like the Worm is prideful and greedy, it would not tolerate communities to persist simply for its own amusement, however much it tries to promote that idea. We have evidence of at least two significant groups that retain either vestiges of polite society or the wasteful trappings of piracy, neither of which match the apparent threat the Worm poses. There must be a way to keep it at bay, some rules it has to follow or regions it has particular control over that we stumbled into."

There's a moment where she pauses for a response or further questioning, then she gathers herself into a meditative pose and checks the gently caress out, thoroughly walling off the external world with a visible sheen of a psychic barrier.
