Dragongate was launched as Toryumon Japan in 1999 by the legendary Último Dragón to help bring lucha libre from Mexico to Japan. The hybrid "lucharesu" style still exists today, with lots of fast-paced multi-man tag matches and a roster of mostly Juniors. In 2004 it was renamed Dragon Gate (a translation of Toryumon) when Ultimo left, leaving CIMA in charge. CIMA departed in 2018, taking StrongHearts with him. The company has since gone through a restructure, and Ultimo returned after 14 years as a senior advisor & wrestler. It's now branded as "Dragongate Japan Pro-Wrestling".

:siren: HOW TO WATCH: :siren:

Paid:
Dragongate Network is their subscription streaming service (1650¥/month), and the PPVs & Korakuen Hall shows have English commentary by Jae Church & Ho Ho Lun. For shows without commentary, Jae usually tweets summaries of promos & segments. DGN has a ton of other content, from previous PPVs to old Toryumon 'digest' shows featuring clipped matches, and Dragongate Future matches featuring the current dojo class rookies.

Free:
DGN Youtube - 1st match of every Network show is free, and sometimes they post previous year PPV matches.
GAORA Sports - Clipped matches & plot summaries (Japanese) of storylines.
Dragongate Youtube - House show matches where characters are developed between Network shows.

You can also usually find most DG shows posted on Bilibili/Youku/VK a couple days after live broadcasts.

Dragongate has 8 major annual shows from March to December, each supported by tours, and at least one big Korakuen Hall show per month where big story developments happen. January & February are usually supported by tag/trios tournaments and/or double Korakuen shows in lieu of PPVs.

Champion Gate: 1st week of March - Two nights, all belts defended.
Memorial Gate in Wakayama: Usually late March - Typically has a Dream Gate title defense.
Dead or Alive: May 5th - Usually headlined by an absolutely bonkers multi-unit apuestas cage match.
King of Gate: May/June Tournament (not a PPV) - Finals at Korakuen for a Dream Gate shot at Kobe.
Kobe Pro-Wrestling Festival: July - Biggest PPV of the year, sometimes 2 nights. AKA "Kobe World".
Dangerous Gate: August or September - Features multiple title defenses.
Gate of Origin: Anywhere from September to November - a floating PPV slotted in as needed.
Gate of Destiny: 1st week of November - Usually has a Dream Gate title match.
Final Gate: Late December - Big year-end show, usually has a few title matches.

GAORA's official site has the current roster lineup, plus some extra faces from the past. This page also has everyone’s pictures with clickable links to bios.

Open the Dream Gate Championship: Dragongate's primary singles title. The champion’s name is etched on a plate behind a locked gate on the belt’s face. Challengers earn keys for title shots, which opens the gate if they win, or is displayed as a trophy hanging from the belt if they lose.
Current Champion: Yuki Yoshioka - defeated KAI @ Kobe Pro-Wrestling Festival, July 30, 2022

Open the Brave Gate Championship: Secondary singles title, originally a middleweight championship with a weight limit of 82kg. Though they often ignore that rule, so it's essentially the midcard belt. Typically won by up-and-coming young talent on their way up, or veterans on a hot singles run.
Current Champion: HYO - defeated Dragon Dia @ Kobe Pro-Wrestling Festival, July 30, 2022

Open the Triangle Gate Championship: Trios titles. Nobody is better at multi-man tag matches than Dragon Gate, and this is a big reason why. Tag and Trios matches follow lucha rules, in that wrestlers can tag their partners, but crossing the ropes to the outside also counts as a tag in order to keep the action flowing.
Current Champions: M3K (Masaaki Mochizuki / Susumu Mochizuki / Mochizuki Junior) - defeated Los Perros del Mal de Japon @ Kobe Pro-Wrestling Festival, July 30, 2022

Open the Twin Gate Championship: Tag team titles. The division gave rise to some of the greatest matches in the company, thanks in no small part to Speed Muscle, the team of 'Rampaging Muscle' Naruki Doi & the now-retired 'Speed Star' Masato Yoshino.
Current Champions: Kung Fu Masters (Jason Lee & Jacky 'Funky' Kamei) - defeated Z-Brats @ Kobe Pro-Wrestling Festival, July 30, 2022

Most of the DG roster is divided into units, AKA factions/stables, with a handful of unaffiliated wrestlers. There is typically one big heel unit, a few tweener units, and a couple babyface units. In a tradition dating back to Toryumon, heel units often cheat using a hard plastic box (aka "BOKKSU!") as a signature weapon.
Toryumon Unit History: 1999-2004
Dragon Gate Unit History: 2004-Present

Z-Brats - Heel unit formed from the ashes of R.E.D in February 2022, after kicking out former leader Eita.
KAI - Formerly of AJPW/W-1. Became a founding member during his first Dream Gate title run.
BxB Hulk - Former veteran leader of babyface units for years, made a shocking heel turn in 2019.
HYO - The "Great Brain" of the group. Ousted former R.E.D leader Eita in January 2022.
SB KENTo - 2021 Rookie of the Year, became a double champion at only 21. (Currently on excursion in North America)
Shun Skywalker - Former leader of Masquerade, lost his mind and turned heel in January 2022.
Diamante - Mexican luchador from CMLL & AJPW, excellent base for the flippy boys.

Natural Vibes - Positive dancing rastaboys. Reformed in 2021 following a 2020 hiatus.
Kzy - Debuted as m.c.KZ, a dancing rapping DJ, later formed a coolguy dance troupe. It's KZY TIME!
BIG BOSS Shimizu - Ongoing identity crisis (5 gimmicks in the past few years). One of the bigger guys on the roster.
U-T - Debuted in the Millennials unit, later found his niche as a llave submission grappler.
Jacky 'Funky' Kamei - 2019 debut, renamed from Funky 'Jacky' Kamei due to his entrance theme misnaming him. (see: Kung Fu Masters)
Jason Lee - Hong Kong wrestler, patterned his style after Bruce Lee. Joined May 2022. (see: Kung Fu Masters)
Strong Machine J - Son of Junji Hirata, the original Super Strong Machine. Joined June 2022 and is now a breakdancing machine.
Former: Susumu Mochizuki, Genki Horiguchi, 'brother' YASSHI, Punch Tominaga

HIGH-END - Formed in March 2021 by YAMATO & Dragon Kid. Babyface group of tough workhorses.
YAMATO - Ostensibly the Ace of DG after CIMA's departure, most championship reigns in the promotion.
Dragon Kid - Toryumon veteran and Ultimo Dragon's protégé. Best hurricanranas in the business.
Ben-K - Toughguy powerhouse, dresses in a samurai aesthetic.
Kagetora - Veteran who came up in Michinoku Pro and has been a DG staple for years.
Former: Keisuke Okuda

Gold Class - Formed in February 2022, Naruki Doi created a unit of hot young himbos.
Kota Minoura - 2018 debut, great all-arounder, promised by Doi to be the "centerpiece" of the unit.
Naruki Doi - Veteran tag specialist. Dyes hair silver for big matches. Invented 'Doi Darts', a random team stipulation.
Minorita - 2021 debut Takumi Hayakawa, 'gifted' to Kota Minoura by Naruki Doi as a mini version of Minoura.
Former: Kaito Ishida

D'courage - Former generational rivals who both unmasked and became BFFs. Formed in January 2022.
Dragon Dia - Protégé of Dragon Kid. Lost his mask in an apuestas match in late 2021.
Yuki Yoshioka - Former dragon man Dia Inferno, unmasked in late 2021. Won 1st Dream Gate title at Kobe World 2022.

M3K - "3x Mochizuki + Kanda". Formed in June 2022, new incarnation of classic Toryumon heel unit M2K, now with one more M.
Masaaki Mochizuki - Toryumon veteran and co-founder of M2K, "Mocchy" frequently wrestles in NOAH.
Susumu Mochizuki - Toryumon veteran, left Natural Vibes & lost his Yokosuka name due to a match stipulation.
Yasushi Kanda - AKA "Kandy". Once one of Toryumon's biggest heels.
Mochizuki Jr. - Debuted as "Masaharu Eto" in the Class of 2022, revealed as Masaaki Mochizuki's son Ryoto. First ever 2nd-gen wrestler of a DG star.

Kung Fu Masters - Only appear at Kobe shows. Formed in Spring 2022, Hong Kong themed unit. Jason & Jacky are still in NV; the others are not NV members.
Jacky 'Funky' Kamei - (see: Natural Vibes) Japanese, but named for Jackie Chan and learning Cantonese.
Jason Lee - (see: Natural Vibes) From Hong Kong, formed the team to represent his homeland.
Ho Ho Lun - Hong Kong wrestler & English color commentator, has appeared in AEW and WWE.
Super Shenlong III - First conceived as a Chinese character. Third incarnation, portrayed by Yosuke♡Santa Maria (see below), previously Shinobu (I) & Mondai Ryu (II).

TORYUMON VETERANS

Ultimo Dragon - The legend. Father of Toryumon/DG, has wrestled everywhere. Still got it.
Ryo Saito - Currently in a GM/matchmaker role, but occasionally still wrestles.
Shuji Kondo - Controversially fired in 2004, spent several years in AJPW/W-1 before returning.
Don Fujii - Cranky dad & kleptomaniac. Tries to throw people off balconies, harasses referees.
Genki Horiguchi - Head booker. Embraces his baldness with "H-A-G-E" (bald) chants.

UNAFFILIATED SINGLES

Eita - Former R.E.D leader, member of Los Perros del Mal de Japon in NOAH.
Madoka Kikuta - 2020 debut, injured for a year. Assistant to D'courage, but not a member.
Takashi Yoshida - Formerly Cyber Kong, big powerhouse who tells people to shut up a lot.
Yosuke♡Santa Maria - A lucha exótico (drag), feminine pronouns. Moonlights as Super Shenlong III. (see: Kung Fu Masters)
Shachihoko BOY - His look is patterned after a mythological creature. Moonlights as Shachihoko Machine or Shisa BOY.
Mondai Ryu - Nicknamed 'Problem Dragon', so he's announced as "Mondai Ryu" Mondai Ryu.
Punch Tominaga - Named for his former "punch perm" hair, typically jobber status.
Konomama Ichikawa - Greatest comedy wrestler of all time. Often loses in <30 seconds and demands an immediate rematch.
Kenichiro Arai - King of micro-indies you've never heard of, 'AraKen' is known for his very hard head.
Ishin Iihashi - First "thoroughbred" wrestler in DG, with a sumo father and joshi mother.
Ryu Fuda - Debuted at Gate of Origin 2021. Very angry kickboy.
Takuma Fujiwara - The "super rookie" of the 2021 class. (Currently on excursion in Mexico)
La Estrella - 2020 class. Former member of Masquerade, possibly an alien. (Currently on excursion in North America)

ROOKIES
Dragongate has an amazing talent scouting and dojo system, Dragongate FUTURE, previously known as the "Trueborn" system. Nearly all their graduates end up becoming great wrestlers with memorable characters.

Class of 2022: "Masaharu Eto" AKA Mochizuki Jr. is also from this class.
Takuma Nishikawa - 25. (Currently on excursion in Mexico)
Kaito Nagano - 19. Debuts in Fukuoka on August 21st.
Yoshiki Kato - 20. Wrestling in exhibition matches.

Jae posted on twitter that that network cameras were there so it's likely going up on the network in the future.

Also for those who want to know identities 99.99% certain Inferno is Yoshioka. La Estrella is Masahiro Inoue, Class of 2020, who most notably did an exhibition at the Toryumon Reunion show before COVID/didn't do many exhibitions until his December debut.

in terms of injury list/debut news: Strong J obv is back this week after shoulder socket surgery. Kikuta got a similar surgery after Dead or Alive so he's probably expected back end of year at best. Sora Fujikawa has been doing ring attendant/tickets over the last few weeks and was told he's probably next up (though a couple of rookies might beat him to debuting, probably in September or October). Oji Shiiba is no longer in the company and will be making his return likely in Osaka or Kunamoto area micro-indies.

it's also worth noting that Ryo Saito's GM role is character only, there's been no change in bookers/he is just a voice like many others in that. SaiRyo basically will do the opening talk with ring announcer Kikuchi and say "okay i'll allow it" when someone wants a match. He did get named as a Director (a position also held by Super Shisa, the former Anthony W. Mori and Masato Yoshino, Ultimo is technically a Special Advisor to the Directors), so he does have an enhanced business role but it doesn't relate to being GM.

I'm putting them in anyway in case SMJ doesn't join another unit, since the other two can easily be slotted in whenever J needs backup. Fujii and Gamma probably aren't doing much else anyway, unless there's another Team Veteran incarnation.

For me it was the first few years of Toryumon until my tape source dried up. Then I found a sporadic source shortly after the DG rebrand, but that was just sort of random matches/PPVs and that eventually dried up too. Then there was the RealHero thing so I caught up on a lot of past shows I missed, but I was getting live PPVs from Niconico so I could stay current too, even when RH shut down his archive. The only other time I missed was the 2020 part of the pandemic when I sort of fell out of all wrestling to take care of some IRL poo poo, but I was able to catch up fairly quickly to present time once I got back in.

I love the current era, but I think my favorite time period was about 2014-2017: Millennials into Over Generation, Mad Blankey into VerserK, Dia.HEARTS into Tribe Vanguard, Monster Express, and of course Jimmyz. Every unit in that era kicked rear end.

For me it was Dead or Alive 2014 when I was getting really into Ricochet's stuff in like PWG and the like and people were raving about this match with some dude named YAMATO in this weirdly named wrestling company, and I watched the whole show and I weirdly latched onto BxB Hulk and I started following and eventually it was his match with Tozawa at Gate of Destiny that really cemented DG as my favorite company. That still might be my favorite wrestling match ever.

I'm new to DG, having just followed them this year.

This tweet was what made me finally sub to the network: https://twitter.com/AHROOMEE/status/1373585870364708865

And it is true for me, DG does a lot of things that NJPW sucks at: caring about tag titles, putting effort into multimans, easily-recognizable units that also matter, and not running the same matchup 4 times a year

Any all-time best match recs? I'm working my way very slowly though the promotion's history, just watching matches that tickle my fancy.

Like, watch the full show of Kobe World 2011 (Twin Gate (CIMA/Ricochet vs. Dragon Kid/PAC) and the Dream Gate (Mochizuki/Hulk) are generally regarded as two of the best matches in company history) and Dead or Alive 2014 (Real fun Twin Gate (Tozawa/Shingo vs Mochizuki/Fuji), one of the best Brave Gate matches ever (Susumu/Flamita), a Dream Gate match that's maybe the best match of Ricochet's career (against YAMATO), and the first Apuestas cage match that gets real wacky with it). Top to bottom all time shows.

I thought the belt swapping hands twice during Kobe World was... interesting, but I read it as them not wanting to do an intra-unit matchup. And SB KENTo winning the belt in his hometown sort of makes sense, too. Not sure what happened as to why they're vacating it though.
