farm time

echinopsis
Apr 13, 2004

on one hand farmers have turned what would be nice native land into a large messy cricket field
which is bad

but on the other hand we need them to survive

thankfully we will all be saved from farmers ravaging the land when we go communist because apparently everyone just wants to organise spaces and no one actually wants to do anything menial, saving us from the farmer

do you know what the problem is

echinopsis
Apr 13, 2004

there are three phenomenon that probably all occur
but a lot of people assume it’s only the first one

carb crashes

large meals

most people get mid arvo energy slump anyway (siesta cultures obv worked this out centuries ago and embrace it rather than push thru it)

there’s a hypothesis that large amounts of carbs mean your body then has to dump a lot of insulin in the body which can lower blood sugars and blah blah there’s probably something in here because carbs defo do this to a lot of people, but the effect isn’t as strong or simple as anti-carb people will say

also large meals in of themselves put the body into a rest and digest mode where energy is diverted to the GI system to digest food and it’s kind of your bodies cycle (you can easily see this in large predator animals that embody the feast/famine dichotomy)

so even large low-carb meals can make ya tired

less carbs is usually always better in general unless
you’re training for something and smaller meals might be necessary to avoid the tiredness regardless

also you got family history of diabetes? coz i get those energy crashes worse than anyone else I know and I can look back at my pre-diagnosed days and remember feeling SOOOO exhausted - not tired - at that time of the day

I can’t even fall asleep if I drink too much. it’s just tossing and turning

you release cortisol to counteract the depressant effect of alcohol but this can last longer than being drunk

so lying there, in the morning, hungover as heck, and the stress hormone is pumping thru your veins. you went to bed at 2am and it’s now 5:30am and why the gently caress can’t I sleep

it’s going to be a long day

Yes to both. Does that stuff really work? What kind of dosage do I want?

Sometimes I take 12.5mg of doxyamine (half tablet of unisom), and it knocks me the gently caress out. But I wake up groggy and cranky - hard to dad well the next morning.

melatonin can often help but ultimately depends on why someone isn’t sleeping well

same with magnesium. it’s an essential ingredient to a good sleep, but by itself isn’t a sleep aid

give some melatonin a shot. its definitely a better approach than sedating antihistamines

magnesium will give you the shits, too

only if you do it wrong

magnesium is always present as a salt and the other ion matters, some tend to cause constipation, others can tend to cause loose bowels, some have better absorption than others.. a good magnesium supplement will be a good blend of salts that minimise side effects

most of the time with most supplements you can easily compare value for money and just get the cheapest but with magnesium you sorta gotta get the good ones

apparently magnesium threonate is very good but we don’t have it here so don’t know so much about it

reminder that magnesium is an essential ingredient to sleep

it doesn’t make you sleepy but you can’t sleep well without magnesium. it’s always the first thing to address if you’re not sleeping well

some will act like a laxative - don’t get that one

i'm probably low on most things

the effect from low iron - mild anaemia - isn’t so much tiredness but exhaustion. doesn’t matter how much you sleep, there’s just no gas in the tank.

echinopsis
Apr 13, 2004

it’s a pain in the rear end to supplement, maybe literally since it causes constipation, but it may be worth finding a solution
