https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAA1XtDOuH8 I started reading this in a dark time years ago and got like one or two volumes in then just forgot the name for, uh, reasons. Right around when her other video about Flip Flappers got me to watch that, incidentally. It just hit way too close to home and ... wow, there's some new context there.

Catgirl Al Capone posted:wow this was really painful to watch in the good, self-reflective way As much as my own description of said pipeline is in being sapphic and everyone knowing it but Knowing now that I picked up this channel around the same time I watched Flip Flappers and Madoka and bought a plush shark for some reason. Apparently I was in good company no matter how oblivious to it all.

I'm not saying any of the bands suck, it's all just incredibly milquetoast and isn't even suitable as a prop to me. If it were completely made-up bands I probably would still have bounced off because it's less 'slow burn' and more 'forgot to turn the oven on'.

My Girlfriend is Devilishly Sweet had a slow update on a tense scene and landed it well. The parfait stuff gets out of hand but the volatility and othering hits particularly close for me.

Solo Wing Pixy posted:What I don't get is the why part. I mean, okay, you have the obvious imagery of girls hatching from cocoon-like eggs, and the agonizing transformation that gives them beautiful wings, but I'm quite sure there's more than that going on. Maybe it's the whole theme of true friendship poking at the fake-feeling nature of everything when you're getting punched by dysphoria? I thought about this all day and I think you got really close. I think it might be recognizing, consciously or not, the experience of depersonalization and derealization, something very very common if not universal to trans folk. Buried in how they're treated by the town and how little they even know themselves. Feeling like the other even when accepted by everyone around you. That's what stuck with me in the six-ish years since I watched it, knowing that even if your differences were as clear and obvious as wings on your back, something was still off about experiencing the world like that; like I had.

Lain might be the same reason. I only finally watched it recently but it didn't have the same effect nor expected connection. Maybe because I actually have resolved some of that poo poo finally. This has, uh, messed me up for the night.

No, nothing quite like that. It did hit with weirdly particular timing though, because earlier in the day I remembered the Yellowcard + Hammock collab album 'A Hopeful Sign' and listened to it, commenting that Southern Air gets stuck in my head because it has the guitar effects I like so much, and lots of the droney stuff like Oblivion Hymns. Then this discussion came up and sat with me all day, and then I remembered how I became aware of Haibane Renmei in the first place, this youtube thumbnail on the last track of Oblivion Hymns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HowZVqylCcM (And I very likely asked if anyone recognized it in a space full of trans folk.) It's easy to say it's all unintentional and circumstantial and that this is a shallow read, but the meaning does hit. Watched the first two episodes with my partner who hasn't seen it yet and even just them commenting that they shouldn't crack the egg from outside is just too perfect.

Solo Wing Pixy posted:Just popping in to say that that my post about Haibane Renmei led to a sequence of events that led to me meeting my trans lesbian platonic life partner/maybe future roommate and stuff. Anime…good? As one of six, "double person" might not be accurate phrasing but don't be afraid to look deeper. Usually it's just dissociation though. Recognizing when simply not being oneself can be hard, especially if it was ever a survival mechanism.

Wandered in here after seeing a new Togenashi Togeari song came out. Nothing new on a Girls Band Cry season though, just the movie.Solo Wing Pixy posted:late update to late update: I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit that watching Haibane Renmei back in the mid-2000s was absolutely the most important event in my life. I mean, it cracked my egg and probably kept me from suicide during the bad years between that and me actually starting to transition. And more recently it led to me meeting my fiancee, and getting out of a shithole red state in the process. Yep, started rewatching it as well a few months ago. It was absolutely loving me and my partner up, and then we got as far as Kuu leaving and just ... goddamn. Which might have even been a factor in: Raeve posted:As one of six, "double person" might not be accurate phrasing but don't be afraid to look deeper. Our seventh finally waking up for real, after like nine years, and she's the bi one which explains a lot. Why does that show seem to reach into places folks don't wanna look and find things for them?

My Girlfriend is Devilishly Sweet is back up on there and a few more chapters along. Meeting mom went surprisingly well and I'm glad it hasn't (hopefully not 'yet') led to an annoying meddling arc. It's just cute as hell and the failgirl tendencies are real.
